"Mama..." Her voice whispered. "Mama... I'm thirsty. Can't I have that one?" She looked up with pleading eyes, indicating a man on the other side of the street.

The thirst burned her throat, was almost painful. She wanted him, someone, anyone! It was only Rem's arms holding her close that kept her from leaving her new mother. Rem's scent was the only thing that was keeping her sane, that was keeping her from going wild and attacking the woman that was walking along the sidewalk... Towards them....

"Maaamaaaa..." She moaned. Her eager eyes were fixated on the woman, her hands clenched tight into the coat Rem was wearing. "Pleeease..."

despite her slight fear of being able to hold spirit she had no choice but to take her hunting once the sun had set. they had headed south to the slums pickings would be easy to find.

as spirits voice came to her pleading for the mans life she smiled as she had already heard his mind before she had even seen him. it was filled with deeds of violence he planned on committing once he found a suitable woman. she listened to him weighing out which of the two to follow and attack. it was easy then to sway his decision towards her and spirit, though to make it impossible to choose other wise she touched the other womans mind implanting thoughts of fear of the man sending her running past them as quick as her feet could take her.

in a tender tone she says 'wait just a moment longer so we can draw him into the alley were you can take your time if you want.' as she finished she turns and starts walking in a slightly faster pace towards the closest ally.

Spirit whimpered. Her eyes followed the woman hungrily. She couldn't help but shift, her body more crouched now against Rem's. Her fingers dug into Rem's shirt, deeper as she watched the woman run off. The chase... The woman was afraid. That was what she wanted... She wanted to chase. It was like a game... A game she was only too eager to play.

"Mamaaaa..." She whimpered, but Rem's voice soothed her.

"Wait? Why? He'll run! I can chase him! I'm a lot quicker now, I know I can catch him! He won't get away!" She promised, her eyes were bright, eager.

"Please? Please Mama, lemme go!!" Grinning, fangs bared as she struggled against Rem's arms. "I wanna play with him! Please!" She fidgeted about again, turning to smile sweetly at the woman.

as they continued to walk towards the alley the man followed them slowly as if he was still deciding what to do when he got there. the girls pleads were almost painful to deny even for a few more minutes.

rem held spirit looser as the turned they corner while saying in a tender tone 'for now we must be careful not to get you around mortals that are not our prey, if i let you go and he ran even a block there is a chance of meeting up with others. this way he is confined, and you can still have fun.' she now hold spirit loosely as she hears the man only a few paces behind them.

'he is yours now' was all she said as she completely looses spirit from her arms and steps out of the way.

She wriggled more as she felt Rem's arms loosen on her. "Yay!" She said excitedly as she was told that she could indeed play with him.

Once Rem's arms were completely loose, Spirit lept off of Rem, over her shoulder and spinning in mid-air with perfect grace and agility, landing right on the man's shoulders, her hands moving quickly over his eyes. There was a part of her that relished this, knew just what to do and how to make things fun.

"What the fuck! Get off of me! What the hell are you!" He screamed, trying to pull her off but not able to. Well, not until she let him grab her, spin her around to look right at her.

As he looked at her, Spirit's smile was sweet, angelic. The perfect picture of purity, innocence and beauty. And the look did it's job. "Why don't I take you back to your, mom little one." He said looking at her with a smile, ruffling her hair affectionately. She nodded and moved closer to the man, wrapping her arms around his neck. He held her close strange enough, patting her back. He started to carry her back to Rem when he felt a sharp pain at his neck.

He pulled her away, a smear of blood on her chin and lips. She blinked with puzzlement and then frowned angrily. A snarl formed on her face as the man threw her to the ground, putting a hand to his neck. "What the hell! You little brat! You bit me!" But that was going to be the last of his verbal complainants for the night.

She lept at him, bowling him over, her teeth sinking into the other side this time. And this time, he couldn't pull her off. Dislodging the child from his neck was impossible. She took her time, savoring the flavor. When she was done she sighed contently, curled up on the man's chest, liking the blood from her lips. He was still warm... The cold of the night hadn't stolen the last of it yet so she would.

she turns as soon as spirit was on the man not wanting to watch her play before feeding, it was still sickening to watch the innocent girl rip into the throat of a mortal. she even cringed as the sound of her piercing his flesh for the first time reached her. she waited in silence as she told her own hunger to wait its turn, which would only come after spirit was full.

after the mans screams were cut off by the sounds of gargling and the scent of blood, lots of blood. she tries focus on finding the next victim since spirit was almost finished with her current one. she forces her mental hand out past its limits covering 3 blocks around them as she tries to find surface thoughts.

Oddly enough, she felt content. The thirst was still there... but something told her that she'd had enough.

As the man grew colder she sat up, wiping the blood from her mouth with the dirty sleeve of her sweater. The clothes Rem had ordered online for her hadn't come yet, but that was okay.

"Mama" She tilted her head as she saw Rem facing away from her. She felt a strange emotion, one that wasn't hers. A regret? A revulsion?

Spirit moved quickly to her mother's side, clambering up as if a chimp, to settle herself against Rem's chest. "Mommy...." She whispered, her fingers brushing Rem's cheek. "Wha... What's wrong? Am I making you sad?"

her concentration was broken as she heard spirits voice causing her to turn and look at her. she tries to hid her frown as she sees the bright red ring around her mouth and the fresh stains on the girls clothing.

as spirit starts to climb her she takes her hands and wraps them about the girl. then taking her thumb as she had the night before she wipes away the ring and smile lightly as she says 'it....it is just i am not use to your new needs yet, you see i have never had company since my sir and i split up not long after i was created. it is not your fault my little one.'

she then tilts her head forward and kisses her lightly on her head, before asking 'are you still hungry?'

"I... I felt something when I saw you... Not sad... but... But like angry too..." She murmured, her green eyes staring into Rem's dark ones. "I... I'm sorry... I don't want you to be angry at me... Or sad." It had to be her fault. She'd never felt something like that from her before, only when Rem had turned away from her. "I love you lots... I don't want you to be mad at me..." She lay her head on Rem's shoulder, a sad look on her face.

But at Rem's last question she shook her head. "No." She said quietly. She wasn't really... And... And maybe it was what she'd just done that made Rem feel bad. Rem didn't like the blood... Even though it made her happy.

Maybe that was what she'd meant by 'new needs'. She'd never needed it before. Maybe she could stop wanting it... She never needed it or wanted it before, why was she so different now?

as spirit started to speak again rem tilts here head to the side in question as she listens to the girls concerning words. lifting her hand she lightly caresses spirits cheek as she smiles lightly, in a soft tender voice she says 'i am not mad at you, spirit..... if anyone i am mad at myself for not protecting you like i said i would......... i did not want this life for you....... this life of murder, even if we only fed off murderers..... it is hard to watch one so innocent covered in blood...... but dont worry the more you feed the better you get.'

she then lightly squeezes spirit affectionately and starts to leave the ally stepping over the cooled body easily as the enter the street. she then adds 'since you are full, i will need to feed.' she continues to walk to the south as she searches out for her meal for the night.

No... The blood made her sad... She... She wasn't supposed to like it. What she was doing... It was bad, Rem was even saying so. It was wrong, bad... She shouldn't do it.

"It's okay..." She whispered, her hand brushing Rem's cheek again. "I love you. I won't make you sad... I promise." She said earnestly as she moved from Rem's chest, climbing up to ride on her shoulders.

She lay her chin on the woman's forehead, her hands playing with the dark strands of hair. "I want you to be happy. I'm happy with you. So you should be happy too. I won't make you sad again mommy."

Rem smiled as spirit tried to comfort her, though the words were odd to hear the emotion behind was undeniable. she continued to walk even as spirit continued to climb on her finally resting on her shoulders and playing in her hair. this was all still very new to her, the emotions that connected them were stronger than any she had while living or in her eternity.

raising her hand she lightly caresses spirits cheek as she says 'i am happy, happy that you are still living when you should be dead. happy that you get to know life and love as it should have been. i am happier than i have ever been and that is because of you, you gave me back a scene of my humanity'

Rem was walking faster now as she continued to search for the mind of her next meal. block after block had been going by as they talked, they were now 8 blocks from where spirit had her meal. after another block rem found what she was looking for near the edge of her outstretched mental hand. she slowed some as she concentrated on him searching for his exact location, which was only a block to the west.

Rem's words didn't make too much sense to her, but she knew that Rem did love her and that was all that mattered. And because Rem loved her, she had to do everything she could to make Rem happy.

As Rem slowed, obviously looking around for something, Spirit clambered down her back.

"Mama? You want me to stay here? I wanna play for a little bit. So I can stay here out of the way. Kay?" She asked looking up at Rem with a smile. "I won't hurt anyone. Promise." She said certainly.

spirits sudden weight shifting confused Rem slightly as she climbed off her and asked to go play. she hesitated for a moment as she considered what might come of letting the girl go "play" with out her to watch. in a calm tone she finally replies 'only if you are careful not to go too far and stay away from others. i will only be a minute..'

she then turns and leaves spirit behind as she quickly goes to find her prey. though as she leaves her mental hand reaches out and connects to the girl. the blocks passed by quickly as rem tried to hurry to get back to spirit.

she caught the guy as he came out of one of the buildings, he had the fresh aroma of death still clinging to him as she pounded on him as he turned towards the street. he did not have time to react before her fangs found his neck and she was drinking greedily.

"I won't hurt anyone, I promise." She said looking up at Rem. "Hurting people makes you sad, so I won't hurt people." She said, grinning slightly in a cheerful tone.

Rem agreed though and went off on her own, even though she couldn't see Rem, she knew the woman was still there. But she occupied herself by 'playing'. She knew now that she could do a lot more things than she ever could before, and she wanted to know just what she could do.

Jumping, running, climbing, she played around in the block, using the largest building much like she would have used a jungle gym before. It was fun!She could leap up the fire escapes in a matter of seconds, she threw a rock almost as far as she could see, hearing it clatter on a roof top blocks and blocks away! It was amazing!

She didn't understand why Rem kept apologizing for what ever she did. The treatment for whatever she had, or whatever had happened to her had made her better! Better than she could ever remember being before.

It was about ten minutes later she lept from the tallest building, falling all the way down to the alley below. She hardly felt anything when she landed! It was like she just jumped off of a chair or something!

Rem would have enjoyed to savor her meal longer, maybe even playing with the man's twisted him before breaking it. tonight though she did not have the time, each second she was physically away from the girl the more she worried about her safety.

the warm liquid was now starting to cool as it flowed slower until finally it stopped all together. pulling away she licks her lips cleaning off the drop or two of blood that remained as evidence of her feeding. with a sigh she stand up and straighten her clothes even brushing off the few flakes of snow off her coat before turning to find spirit.

calling out in a tender tone she says 'are you having fun my dear?'

She'd just gotten up from playing in the snow, going to start another round of her daredevil antics when she heard Rem's voice in her mind. She felt relief come from the woman and smiled. "See! I won't hurt anyone! There was a guy out smoking on one of the buildings, but I left him alone." She said proudly.

"OH! Mama! You wanna see what I can do? It's soo much fun! Watch!"

But before the woman could even answer, Spirit had shot off, leaping like a chimp through the trees. She made her way up the building's side by windows and the fire escape without a single hesitation. It was as if her body could do it all on it's own now, like breathing.

In no time it seemed she was up at the top of the building again, and she could see Rem almost clearly the whole twenty stories down.

"Mama! Mama watch me!" She 'yelled' down, not sure if Rem would be able to hear her from this distance.

But she lept from the building again, falling just as fast as any human would. And as before she landed in a crouch with a thud. But she stood up a second later, seemingly unphased by the two hundred or more foot drop. "Wasn't that cool!"

Rem smiled as spirit beamed with pride about not hurting anyone. she could not help but to also feel relief also as she knew the girl was fine. she picked up her pace as she tried to find spirit, though she could find her easily mentally it was different physically.

she was concentrating on finding her when the girls voice came overwhelming her with excitement as she asked her to watch. rem tilted her had slightly as she wondered what spirit want her to watch and to her slightly horror she saw her climbing up a building with ease.

spirits voice came to her again as she reached the top, just before she jumped off letting herself fall the 20 stories to the ground. Rem froze in shock as she watched the girl fall not knowing what would happen when she hit the ground. when spirit landed with unnatural ease relief flooded over rem.

within a few seconds she was next to spirit trying to look over as a concerned mother might when her child finished something dangerous. then she embraces her tightly as she says 'please be more careful, i dont want to lose you, again.'

She felt the panic that was building up in Rem as she climbed, but that was okay. She knew that Rem was worried, but she also knew she could do this. She'd just done it before after all.

A contorted laugh came from Spirit as Rem scooped her up, holding her close. "It's okay mama! I knew I could do that. I knew it wasn't gonna hurt me." She'd always listened to her body before, about whether she could do something, why would now be any different?

"Plus... You never lost me before. I'm still here." She said smiling at Rem with all the innocence of her childish face.

Rem gives her one last squeeze before letting her go and standing back up. she then says 'so what do you want to do now? if you dont want to live too close to the others in my apartment for now we could find another place, which might not be so bad since you have not room or bed to your own.'

she looks in the different directions as she waits for spirits answer while thinking of possible places that would suit their current needs.

Spirit tilted her head slightly as Rem asked about finding a new place. She didn't understand why. Well she understood as the woman explained, but until then she didn't see why. But she shook her head then. "No... We don't have to move. It's okay, we can stay where we are. I like sleeping with you."

She lay her head on Rem's shoulder, snuggling her face into the crook of her neck.

rem tilted her head as she asks 'are you sure? they wont be to tempting for you? i dont want to make this harder on you, and even if we move i still enjoy having you sleep with me.it is your choice though.' as she lift her hand and caresses spirits cheek.

the night was still too young for them to head back to the apartment, though Rem could not take spirit to the clubs she would frequency to pass her own nights. rem was having a slight problem as to what to do with the girl. times had greatly changed since she was young, not to mention the fact that her life as a rice hand was not fun in anyway. she really had little to go on, and she doubt asking spirit would yield much since her mortal life was her surviving from day to day.

though rems decides to ask anyway since it would not hurt anything to ask. in a tender tone she says 'since we have extra time tonight, is there anything you would like to do?'

She bit her lip slightly, thinking about what she wanted to do. There was one thing that she wanted to do... But she didn't know if it would be safe. Well it would be safe for her, but what about for them?

"I... I wanna go see the others." She whispered. "Can I mama? I wanna go let them know I'm okay. That I want to be with you." Her eyes were pleading as she looked up at him. "I know they're worried about me, I want to let them know I'm okay. I can't talk to them, but you can talk to them for me, right?"

rem hesitated slightly as she though of the girls request and frowned slightly. she doubted that the other children would understand what happen and why spirit was so different. not to mention the fact she would have to communicate for her, which was defiantly not normal either.

in a tender tone she says 'i dont know if that is such a good idea, though i am willing to give it a try if you really want to see them. though you are very different compared to the last time they saw you so i dont know how they will react.'

"I always looked pale." She said with a grin.

"Am I really any different? I didn't think I changed... I mean I feel different, like I can do a lot of things..." But she shifted around slightly and looked at her hands. She didn't think she looked any different. She thought that she looked the same, just felt stronger, more powerful. She didn't feel helpless.

"I wanna see them... I want them to know I'm okay." She insisted. Grinning she shifted, climbing back on to Rem's shoulders. She liked perching there. It let her see everything, let her smell and hear everything.

"Please Mama, I won't hurt them."

rem half smiled as spirit continued to ask about going to see the others. sighing she thinks what harm can it do? and turns towards the section of town she had found her in. in a tender tone she says 'ok, but you must be careful.' as she waits for spirit to settle back down before she quickens her pace.

at the pace rem set it did not take too long for them to enter the section of town where the restaurant sat. slowing she reaches up and caresses spirit and says, 'can you find them for us?'

Spirit hopped down in the snow as they came to the place where Rem had found her only a few nights ago. Of course she could find them. She knew where they would go, what they would do. Nodding she turned back to Rem with a smile then began to run off down the street.

They would be in an old house, one that had been abandoned about a year ago.

"I won't hurt them Mama. They're like my family too. Just like you." She said simply. It wasn't too long until they came to the old house. She tried to call out to them, but of course the words didn't come out right. She tried again desperately. But still nothing.

Biting her lip she moved around the house, Rem behind her, looking for a way in that Rem could come too.

But she didn't need it.

"S... Spirit?" A small boy's voice came. "Spirit!" It came more cheerful now, and Punchy, a small scrawny boy with long dirty blond hair came running out and threw his arms around her. His rich aroma made spirit tense and shudder, she had to remember who he was... Who she was.

"Mama? Tell him... Tell him it's okay. He doesn't need to worry or be afraid of me or you." She said to her mind as she hugged the boy close, not wanting him to go for now. Not until Rem explained. Punchy would be the most likely to listen.

as spirit leaped off her and took off down the street rem followed her with out hesitation. it was not long before they had stopped in front of an old house, and once again spirit tired to speak only letting out harsh inhuman sounds making Rem frown with concern.

it was not long before a little boy came out for what reason rem was not sure but was thankful none the less. though as the boy came up and hugged spirit she could feel the tension as she tried to control her urge to rip him apart. she smiled though as spirits voice came to her in a calm and collective tone, proving she had won the fight.

rem did not move as she watched them, reaching out with her mental hand she connects with the boy smoothing over any fear he might have had for her. in a warm calming tone she says punchy, spirit wanted you all to know she was ok, that she was not sick any more though she is now unable to talk.

Punchy tried to pull away as he heard a woman's voice. "Spirit you brought cops!?" He asked, stunned. But Spirit's arms held him tight as she shook her head. No! No! She wanted to tell him that she'd never betray them, even if... Even if maybe a home was better than what they had....

"Whu? Why can't she talk?" He asked looked at the woman then back to Spirit puzzled. "If she's better why can't she talk?"

Spirit let go, giving him a shrug. "I don't remember what happened... I'd just run from you, then I'd come out and we were heading back... And that was the last that I remember until I woke up again..." She murmured to Rem to convey to Punchy.

"Can you get the others? I want to talk to them... But it would be better out here..." Something told her that going into the house where the scents were everywhere would be a bad idea.

rem cringed as shock, pain, and fear crossed the small boys face as he noticed her. unlike with spirit, rem did not feel an urge to comfort the boy, though she tried for spirits sake. rem again tried to sooth the boy with her mental hand as she spoke in a warm and tender tone she is still healing from her sickness that made her cough so much and weakened her. i tried to get her to wait until she was 'fully' better and could speak, but she could not wait to see you, all of you. she has worried about you since the moment i found her a few nights ago.'

"Oh... Yeah. That's like you alright." Punchy said, grinning at Spirit. "You is always worried about us, even though Bullet said you could cough blood or die any day. But you never cared about that, did ya?"

Grinning sheepishly and shrugging, Spirit shook her head. She never really was worried about herself, and she still wasn't.

"You didn't tell him I wanted to talk to all of them though! That I want to see them and let them all know that I'm really okay. They won't believe just him if he says so. If they won't come out here, tell them to let us in." She mumbled with frustration at Rem.

She had to talk to them, tell them all that a home wasn't a bad thing and they should try to get one if they could. She could tell Punchy, but well, they'd never believe him on his own. That's why she had to talk to all of them.

rem smiled softly at the boy as he accepted her answer, thankfully children were simple minded. though as spirits voice came to her she frowned slightly as she again demanded to see all of the others.

rem still did not move closer to spirit or the boy as she started to speak again in a warm calming tone. punchy do you think you could bring the others out so spirit can see them also? otherwise she will want to go in and get them.

Punchy frowned as Rem asked him to bring out the others.

"Spirit... You know I can't do that... After you went missen, Bullet only lets us goes out in pairs now... She won't let everyone be together outside anymore...." He paused though as he saw Spirit's frown, a glare almost. "Uh... But I can get her... If Bullet sees you're okay, she might let the others come to." He scampered off and Spirit smiled.

She scrambled up onto Rem's shoulders.

"Maybe if I'm with you She'll know you're okay. I mean I don't wanna scare her off. I want her to know that a family isn't a bad thing... That cops aren't bad."

Rem could feel the disappoint spirit felt as she frown at the boys words, though so could punchy. she felt a little relieved that the boy decided to to try and get bullet to come out. she watched as he turned and headed off in to the building as her mental hand followed him searching for the bullet's mind.

it did not take long to find the hardened teens mind. and touch it. she warmly caressed the girl as she weaved thoughts of joy and disbelief that spirit was fine.

Rem continued to stand still as spirit climbed up her and sat on her shoulders while she spoke. she smiled as she lifted her hand and softly caressed spirits cheek as she says aloud we can only hope so.

As Bullet came out Spirit grinned widely, but apparently Bullet couldn't see the small fangs that she now had.

"So... Punchy says you're all better? And you wanna tell me something huh? Why'd you bring her? She's a cop ain't she? Why you bring her here, are you trying to get us all caught or something."

Spirit jerked back, clutching at Rem's neck out of simple reaction. She shook her head and tried to speak, but nothing human came out. "No! That's not it! That's not it at all! I just wanted to let her know I was happy, that I like being with you, in a real home! We don't have to be on the streets! There are people who want to help us, not just put us bad places!" Her face was pained.

Can... Can you tell her that please?" Her eyes were pleading as she looked at the girl, almost a young woman really. "Tell her I just want to help, I just want her to know that they don't have to live like this..."

Rem stood there calmly as Bullet came out and verbally attacked spirit. as spirit clutched her neck she reached up and caressed her as spirits words filled her mind. the intense emotions that flooded her caused rem to frown slightly. she waited for spirits words to die down before she starts in a warm soothing tone bullet, spirit has only had your well being in mind. before she lost he voice she only talked about wanting to help yall. she did not want you to have to continue living like this, cold hungry, and just surviving. she wants you to have a better life, and even find a family that cares for you. though like spirit you have the choice, no one will force it on you
