Title: Searching for Stage Lights

Ferox was bored.
He looked around at his spacious house and all of its the meticulously chosen furniture and art and antiques and he was, in a word, dissatisfied. Everything in the house had been chosen after careful deliberation and thought and care and he was displeased by every damned scrap of it. If he had been the irrational sort, it was well within his power to destroy every tiny splinter of all of it—the house, the furniture, the computers, et cetera, et cetera.
But he was not of the irrational, impulsive sort. If he had been, he would not have survived as long as he had. So, despite the urge to vaporize it all, he remained calm. “I am bored,” he said aloud, musingly, though apparently not to the young man who was currently watching him with enormous brown eyes. They were handsome, liquid and, at the moment, terrified. Under typical circumstances Ferox would have found vast entertainment in that fear, but could not muster up the enthusiasm at the moment.
Of course, that was not for lack of trying. The man, boy really, was strapped down to a stout wood table with ties at his wrists and ankles, of course, but also across his hips, forehead, just above the knee, and just above the elbow to completely immobilize. Only his eyes could be freely moved. Ferox looked at the boy, studying his expert handiwork. And sighed. With a slight gesture of his fingers, he carved another slice into the boy, just nicking the femoral artery to allow a steady trickle of blood to flow. Though he knew it to be contrived, Ferox caught the thick liquid in a heavy crystal goblet. Sipping as he studied the boy, he wondered how to make the kill different and interesting.
He sighed again when he couldn’t immediately think of anything. Draining the goblet, he gave another idle gesture, the boy flinched, and a fine thread floated towards his wounded leg, slithering inside the bloody gash where, unseen, it began to suture the cut artery. “I can’t leave it as it is, you see, or else you’ll bleed out while I’m gone. We certainly can’t have that. I may not know quite what to do with you at the moment, but I’m sure I’ll figure something out,” Ferox told the boy informatively.
Knowing that he reeked of the boy’s blood and sweat, at least to the sharp nose of a fellow vampire, Ferox trotted from the house. With any luck, the perfume of blood and fear would attract the interest of one of those fellow vampires. There were certainly plenty of them crawling over this city. If not one of them, perhaps another little mortal to play with.

Black converse barely made noise as she waltzed through the shadowed city, her slender legs covered in black jeans. Her tank top was a pale blue- to match her fierce icy eyes and her face was quite sharp. Her jaw lines were prominently gorgeous and her brown hair was spiked with an assertive look to it.
And she was all those things: dark, icy, assertive- and above all stylish in her own way- not in appearance as much as how she held herself.
But she had been dormant for so long- been inactive for so long. Carina Durr growled. Stupid Seraphina- stalking her like she was God- or her mother. Her mother.... The affection thought was brushed away as the woman walked through the streets of the city.
Bored.
Carina wanted some fun- and she wasn't finding. Sure, her nights with Hale were- quite fun, but not frequent enough. her attention faded and ebbed so quickly- how could she possibly keep herself entertained for the rest of her life? She had been growing restless for some time- sick and tired of the usual tortures. Sick and tired of being sick and tired....
Romax - May 16, 2008 10:55 PM (GMT)
Ferox paused in his ambling, his head lifting, narrow nose flaring as he sniffed. He had caught a scent upon the air, one marked with the unmistakable tang of a vampire. A younger vampire, but not a fledgling. He inhaled deeply, drawing in the unmistakable scent and, with a quick smile, turned to follow it. Luck or coincidence was on his side it seemed. Ferox dreamed for company and it was delivered, and so quickly. He could not help but be pleased.
He found the other quickly, but hung back, preferring to study for a moment instead of rushing to make introductions. The very thought of that made him smile again. Ferox was again pleased to see that he had been right--a young vampire after all. Young when she had been turned, though older than he had been, and young relative to himself. And she practically showcased her youth, he thought, with her sneakers and her jeans, her blue tank, and her gelled hair. The immortal glanced down at himself in amusement. Who was he to talk? He wore faded jeans and work boots, a long-sleeved shirt and a denim jacket. Ferox passed a hand over his cheek. Why, he even had a bit of stubble.
Youth was a grand disguise.
Patiently, always preferring to be approached rather than doing the approaching, Ferox hung back a bit, waiting to see if she was aware enough to notice him.
Nikolaos - May 21, 2008 07:22 PM (GMT)
Carina walked with a bounce in her step- almost musically. She hummed lightly as each step moved with a determination, but also with a slight laze. She was still bored.
And then she smelled him. Old. So old it made her bones ache. She hugged herself and frowned. It "hurt" but not in a bad way, just in a warning kind-of way.
If it were a label it would read:
WARNING: ANCIENT VAMPIRE
DO NOT PISS OFF
Well, she had no intention of pissing him off- but she could feel him watching her. What did he want with her? Obviously- not to socialize. Besides- she wasn't really the social type. Not many vampires thought the way she did- protecting the damn mortals and their sensitivities. And those vampires- well, they were sad excuses of night dwellers or whatever the fuck they wanted to call themselves. Carina's spiky silver bracelet glinted in the moonlight as she turned. She couldn't possibly hunt with him watching her could she?
She turned to look over her shoulder and found him amongst the shadows. She arched an eyebrow. Was he waiting for her to say something? What the hell? An ancient wouldn't kill her for saying hello- and she had a funny feeling he was waiting for her.
"Hello?" she tried, stopping to face him, one foot subconsciously slipping behind the other- just in case anything bad did happen. Well, she'd died anyways if anything bad happened- but at least she would die prepared. Ha! God, she was paranoid. She supposed that happened to all vampires. How paranoid was he? Being so old and all.... he had to be on the brink of psychosis---
Romax - May 21, 2008 08:47 PM (GMT)
Ferox could tell the moment she noticed him. He had studied people, and vampires, for a good long time and it was easy to see the little tensing of the shoulders, the instinctive tilt of the head as they caught the smell. Only those with much practice could mask those tiny indicators, and even then it was a task.
She stopped, apparently disconcerted by his presence. Perhaps it was the age difference. It made some a bit twitchy. Ferox didn't see why. When you lived forever, it seemed to him that you should take the time to come to terms with death and danger because there was always a bigger fish just waiting to swallow you up. Then she turned and he wondered if he had been off. Perhaps she was not so disconcerted. She didn't try to think away his presence, after all, but instead turned to face him. Why, she even spoke.
He approved.
Ferox ambled a little closer, a bit amused by the way she slipped into a subtly defensive stance. As if that would help her. If he wanted it, she'd be ash before she had a chance to say 'hello' again.
"Hello to you as well." He didn't hide the way his stone-colored eyes studied her--not lingering on her body as a human's might, but as if curious to see what she was. "Out for a walk?"
Nikolaos - June 15, 2008 08:49 PM (GMT)
"Out for a walk?"
Carina smiled. "Actually, I am.... I suppose I'm a little bored. I thought I might find- I don't really know- something...."
Carine met his gaze and watched him as he studied her. What was he looking for? Weaknesses? He knew she was nothing compared to him? She knew as well, her body aching with the weight of his age. The ache faded as she stopped thinking about his age.
"And you- are you out for a walk?" she inquired, daring to take a step towards him. Maybe she was curious about his ancient, maybe she had a death wish. Either way, she found that step bringing her closer to him.
"One as talented as you shouldn't tire easily," she mused with curiousity. She could only imagine the powers of those older than she. She could only fantasize about Hale's revealed powers. And- if she could do what they could--- God, she'd never tire. She'd never rest, never cease to enjoy every day of her death.
Romax - June 20, 2008 10:20 PM (GMT)
Ferox listened to the younger vampire speak for a moment, measuring the sound of her voice and its faint, harsh accent. "Bored, is it? That seems to be going around this evening," he said, a note of amusement in his own voice. Two bored souls met on the street and one says to the other, he thought to himself and nearly laughed. Interesting how that happened, though, all humor aside.
"And you- are you out for a walk?"
He raised an eyebrow, replying only, "As a matter of fact." She moved in a little closer, how bold, before she spoke again. Ferox couldn't help the smile that leapt to his face. "Shouldn't I? Perhaps I've gotten weary in my advanced age... feeble." Or perhaps only a bit touched in the head--why else would he let that irritating female live? He frowned a little as his thoughts moved, briefly, to Eire. There were things he'd enjoy doing to the stupid cow, things that would guarantee he wouldn't be bored anymore. And yet he didn't.
Hm.
"And you? What of your stamina?" he asked, his attention returning to the present in full, his question a mix of innuendo and challenge.
Nikolaos - June 25, 2008 07:16 PM (GMT)
"Shouldn't I? Perhaps I've gotten weary in my advanced age... feeble."
Carina leaned her weight on her right leg, her left hand resting on her hip as she gave him an interested smile. "I highly doubt you're weary or feeble." she replied, quite sure that this ancient was no doubt stronger than she- most likely able to kill her with a single thought or blow. Ironically, it didn't really frighten Carina all that much. She was a strong believer in fate- and if Fate meant for her to die tonight- there'd be no way to escape it. All she could do was live her life- or rather death and hope for the best, hope that Fate would not be as spiteful as she had been during Carina Durr's lifetime.
"And you? What of your stamina?"
"Stamina?" she asked with a small grin, her eyes quite serious however. "When I'm in a creative mood- I'm entertained easily and for great lengths of time, but then- there seems to be moments when I simply run out of ideas- and then I have to wait.... until I get another-" She shrugged, her eyes never leaving his face. What did he care? Why did he want to know? And had she answered his answer correctly?
And so this conversation was ironic- two corpses walking about the night.... bored? It was pathetic that any vampire should grow bored, but sometimes- in the course of such a long life span.... it had to happen at least once in awhile.
Romax - July 1, 2008 07:00 PM (GMT)
Ferox quirked an eyebrow at the younger vampire. "Do you really, miss...?" he asked, smiling a little even as he lazily studied the cloudy night sky. "I suppose you're right that I am far from feeble. But weary..." he trailed off again, "Ah, I might be weary, tired of the same old thing." Ferox looked directly at her this time, his stone-grey eyes emptying of their humor to leave seriousness behind as he added, "Age does that, unfortunately. One is always looking for something new, something more... engaging."
He paused then, after a moment, smiled. "And don't I sound the doddering fool? Why don't you walk with me? I could, perhaps, use the ideas of someone fresh, saving me from my own circular thoughts." Ferox was, by nature, a solitary vampire, but that didn't mean he despised all company. "Together, why, we might happen upon some entertaining, outrageous idea to stave away our collective boredom."
Nikolaos - July 2, 2008 03:20 PM (GMT)
"Age does that, unfortunately. One is always looking for something new, something more... engaging."
Carina smiled and shrugged. "Yeah- it does, but you've been around longer than me- I'm still a novice actually- still learning and stretching my.... what word should I use? Stretching my imaginative horizons?" she added with a wicked smirk, her eyes flashing for a moment, their icy hue dancing with a violent nature that she had never possessed before they had taken her family away.
"And don't I sound the doddering fool? Why don't you walk with me? I could, perhaps, use the ideas of someone fresh, saving me from my own circular thoughts."
A smirk then, flashing across red lips. "No. You don't sound foolish to me." She smiled then, genuinely. "Sure, I'll walk with you." Like she had though before- if Fate intended for him to kill her- it'd happen. Besides, she'd always wanted to go out with a gruesome bang- making the papers even? Maybe? Carina almost laughed at her own morbid thoughts but she kept the day dream of her dying day hidden away behind unreadable blue eyes. However, she was quite certain he wasn't looking to kill her- unless that was what ended up relieving him of his boredom.
"Maybe we will come across an idea...." she mused, moving to step up beside him and fall into stride with him as they began to walk, the streets of Demaitre no different than the day when she had arrived.
Romax - July 24, 2008 08:02 AM (GMT)
Ferox’s narrow, aesthetic face stretched into a smile as the younger vampire spoke, as she flashed a pleasingly sinful smirk. He liked the girl so far, he decided in a flash, and he had to admit he was at least slightly intrigued. “Perhaps I should show you a few of my favorite tricks,” he said lightly, with a distinct air of carelessness, “Simply watching you enjoy them would entertain me as well.”
But he was interested in more than simply killing with the pretty, young thing, he wanted to know more about her, for two reasons. The first was that he was simply curious by nature; the second was that it was always more entertaining to know what drove one to violence. Ferox knew why he killed, beyond the basic need for subsistence. It was for the entertainment and to satisfy the deep fascination with death he had. What about her? What had birthed the violence that flared so clearly in her eyes?
Inquiring minds want to know.
He glanced over at her as she fell into step beside him, feeling her thoughts flutter at the edges of his own. Ferox didn’t tune in, though he could have. It was rude, and besides, it was much more interesting to hear it from them. Lightly, he asked, “So, tell me, why aren’t you afraid that my chosen entertainment might be you? After all, we are so much more… durable than humans. If I decided to, say, eviscerate you, you wouldn’t die or pass out as one of them might.”
Nikolaos - August 1, 2008 07:38 PM (GMT)
"I do like to see tricks- learn them do if you'd let me," she replied, her smile a little too twisted to be considered anything but cruel. Her eyes flashed with a sinful joy that was inhumane and a little scary. But that was who she was- what she was. And they had made her that way- humanity.... and so she'd show them all- just how merciless she could be. They had taken everything from her. And Karma was a bitch- Carina was only helping her out.
“So, tell me, why aren’t you afraid that my chosen entertainment might be you?"
"First of all- if you did it the right way and didn't kill me or ruin me- being ripped apart would feel good-" she said, a kinky glint in her eyes. Yeah. She was a freak- and a big one at that. She just couldn't help but love the thought of tearing flesh to the bone and claws under skin.....
"And if you're gonna finish me- torture me to the point of madness- well, I can't very well stop you- so why try-" she said with a smirk. "Oh I'd fight but really- why should I worry? What happens will happen and I can't do anything to stop the hands of time."
And then she paused for a moment- her eyes thoughtful for a moment before she looked at him and smiled- the expression sharp and cold. "The name's Carina."
Romax - August 17, 2008 07:09 PM (GMT)
Oh, Ferox could just see himself liking this young thing. There was a nice, wild flash of viciousness in her eyes--perhaps a touch too much, but it wasn't as though he was looking for a commitment here or long-term project. He simply wanted a little diversion for the evening and the young miss here, with her flashing eyes and supple form, seemed the perfect prospect to deliver. "I'll try to be a very good teacher," he promised with a twinkle in his eye that would have seemed quite cheery if not for the fact that he was speaking of torturing unsuspecting humans.
We wouldn't call them innocent, would we? As those cynical dogs among us know, no one is ever truly innocent.
"And if you're gonna finish me- torture me to the point of madness- well, I can't very well stop you- so why try?"
Yes, Ferox decided even as a low, smooth chuckle slipped out, he did indeed like this girl. "Well, that's a very... practical outlook, you have. I can appreciate one." As she introduced herself, he took her hand, his deep grey eyes glinting as he lifted it to his lips. "It's a pleasure to meet you, Carina. At the moment, I've been going by Farris Hayes."
Nikolaos - September 18, 2008 06:42 PM (GMT)
ooc: ooh that was a good post. I'll have to make a doubly-evil one in reply. oh goody
She was something wild, not at all tamable in her own ways. Perhaps even a little unstable at times. But what was life without surprises? She wasn't meant to be civilized. She had lost the desire to please society a long time ago. And that was fine with her. She could play the part well when need be- but here was an ancient with the same hungers as she.... So why should she hide what she was? it wasn't as if she could hide it from him? Such power emanating from him. It made her shudder pleasantly with a smart little smirk.
Carina laughed to herself as she watched him look her over- consider her for a moment.
"I have no doubt you'd be a wonderful teacher," she replied, almost laughing at the word try. He knew that he was experienced- more so than she. And definitely an able bodied ancient who could teach her many, many new tricks. And maybe a few treats as well, but that would depend....
No, no one was innocent. Everyone had their sins and everyone had to pay. And Carina would make humanity pay for what they did to her family. And she'd enjoy it.
The cheery glint in the older vampire's eyes made Carina chuckle softly- letting a hand touch her lips as if to stifle it. The expression was simply ironic. They were speaking of ripping humans apart. It was fantastic. Something straight out of Shakespeare. She had always loved dramatic irony. It was so devious.
"Practical." she repeated, giving him a genuine smile. "Yeah- that'd be me." Carina arched an eyebrow as he took her hand- his soft laughter running along skin as he kissed her hand. She smirked as he gave her a name and found her icy pale eyes meeting his grey ones- an interesting combination of colors.
"The pleasure's all mine Farris...." she let her voice drawl out a little bit, her words lingering on her soft lips before they twisted into a smirk.
Romax - September 20, 2008 02:44 AM (GMT)
OOC: Daggum, I completely forgot I gave him that stupid alias... sounded cool at the time...
He kept her hand in his, fingers idly stroking over hers, almost like one would stroke the fur of a sleek, purring cat. "All right," Ferox said after a moment, his eyes staying on hers with that little smile in them, "So tell me, where would you like to go?" A club, a park? Mmm, been there, done that. It was a sure way to find some young, attractive human to drain dry--but he'd been there and done that so many times before.
Ferox wanted something truly vicious, something nice and bloody and positively... horrifying. His lips curved a little as the word floated up. That was exactly what he wanted. Something that would make the little humans scream when they found what was left behind.
"We'll have some fun," he finished after a moment.
Nikolaos - September 20, 2008 08:55 PM (GMT)
ooc: hahaaa
Carina arched a slender eyebrow at Farris as he kept her hand in his, her fingers so small and insignificant in his grasp, like a bird trapped in a cage. She didn't mind though. It was his will tonight, because it'd be stupid to protest. Now, don't get me wrong- Carina Durr isn't really the type to take shit lying down. She'd much rather fight to the death- and she would if it ever came to it, but still.... if she didn't mind his ideas for the night- then she'd play along- stay in this cage that he could put her in.
And if she didn't like it- well, things would get ugly for him and things would get dead for her. Hah. Funny. A smirk even appeared on the female German's lips, catlike and curious as he ran his fingers over her soft hand.
Vicious hand. So capable.... His and hers. Together. Maybe more than vicious? Delightful. Oh, she did like him.... And where things were going.
"Where would I like to go?" she repeated, smirking. "Well, I think I'd like to go wherever you haven't been- or where you've been the least. Someplace unusual. Someplace different-" She waited for an answer, sure whatever he suggested would please her.
Fun. Oh yes. They'd have a lot of fun playing. And the human- she almost pitied them.
Almost.
But not really.
Who was she kidding? She was Carina Durr- a relentless bitch bent on destruction.
Was that an exaggeration? Hmmmmm.... Maybe? Probably not.
Romax - January 14, 2009 04:21 AM (GMT)
OOC: Can we change his fake name? *facepalm* That's a horrible fake name. It keeps making me think of Ferris Bueler's Day Out. How about... Mason?
"Well... Someplace I haven't been..." Ferox mulled that one. "You put forward a troublesome suggestion as there are precious few places I haven't been." He shifted his grip on her hand so that they almost appeared to be a couple. "A home, perhaps? Some nice little two-bedroom, one bath?" he added with a laugh. It had been a while since he'd done anything really destructive. Oh, he'd killed and bloodily so, but he hadn't had a good slaughter.
Messy, he thought to himself again, with plenty of screaming and pointless flapping about--yes, that was exactly what he wanted. He touched a finger to his chin. A part of him also wanted to see if he could shock this younger vampire, wanted to gauge just how jaded she was or was not. "There's a private boarding school just outside the city limits." His eyes caught the dim light of a street lamp they walked under and almost looked white for a moment. "The rich ones are the softest," he added to himself.
Nikolaos - January 15, 2009 12:27 AM (GMT)
Carina let Mason change the position of his fingers upon her hand and she interlaced hers with his, stepping closer as they came together like lovers. Hah- if that were so. He leaned towards her, his words as tempting as the lovers seductive glance.
"A home, perhaps? Some nice little two-bedroom, one bath?"
She smiled, a little wicked excitement dancing behind her eyes in a frenzy. To Carina, blood and gore was just as attractive as a bed of roses. Actually, if someone ever brought her a bouquet of arms she'd prolly run off with them right there and then. Maybe. She was one for gore, but she did believe that fear was much more satisfying. Horror and shock smelled so much sweeter than flowers and cries for help- well, they were the bow on top.
Panic. If he wanted gore and horror, she wanted panic. She wanted fear.
"Boarding school.... sounds delightful," she replied, her answer as casual as if they were discussing where they ought to dine for dinner. But they weren't going to feed- of course she probably could take one of the brats for her own... and what he muttered under his breath- rich ones are the softest....
It was completely true. Carina liked a challenge most of the time, but this would be fun. Maybe some of the children would have blonde hair- she wanted them to die last.
Romax - January 15, 2009 12:53 AM (GMT)
Ferox grinned again as she responded positively. "Oh, good," he replied with a smile. The boarding school was a tony one with plenty of security--but human security was no barrier to creatures like him. He tugged her hand, bringing her closer to him. "Can you fly?" he asked casually, figuring that would be the fastest way to get to the school.
As far as he knew, flight or at least great speed was common among his kind.
There was a fairly uncomplicated beast hiding underneath Ferox's cultured exterior. It simply liked to break things--inanimate objects, small children, pretty girls, it wasn't choosy.
And now that he had the idea in mind, he wanted to get there quickly.
Nikolaos - January 19, 2009 11:59 PM (GMT)
Carina nodded, responding quickly. Yes. She could fly. One of the things that she was good at. Speed, flight, strength- nails that had learned to sharpen into claws. She was certainly made for maiming and who was she to deny her nature. Unfortunately, the ability to manipulate minds hadn't been passed to her but to her brother. Damn.
It would be so much more fun if she could play with both- torture both- body and mind. However, she made due with shock and horror tactics that would shock most younger vampires. She had quite a thirst and it was never quenched. As far as she knew- she would never be satisfied.
Maybe tonight- maybe tonight she'd finally wet her tastes. Maybe she'd finally sigh and sit back with their work- content. She was never content nowadays. It simply wasn't enough. Was she doing the right things? Maybe she wasn't letting them live long enough? What was she doing wrong?
Maybe he could show her?
A frigid eye turned to him and she smiled. It was genuine but so cold it burned- like dry ice.
"Lead the way Mason."
Romax - January 20, 2009 06:52 PM (GMT)
Ferox smiled. "Shall we, then?" he asked politely, not waiting for an answer as he leapt to the air. Of all the fun things that came with being a vampire, flight was a definite plus. It wasn't quite as great as living, essentially, forever or being able to do just about anything he wanted (like making fire out of nothing) but there was a sense of invincibility when he was flying. It was almost, not quite, almost as good as feeding.
Against the cloudy ((is it cloudy? lol)) dark sky, the two of them were quite hard to see, small and lightless as they sped along on their way. Pausing, Ferox glanced down to get his bearings, before turning abruptly and shooting forward again.
He was almost disappointed when the short flight ended. Ferox took a deep breath of the cold air, feeling it rush into his lungs. When he breathed out, his body was too cold for it to fog. He studied the mostly-decorative, but still fully functional, iron fencing that surrounded the tony boarding school. "Home sweet home," he murmured, thinking of all the juicy little tidbits sleeping inside.
