Name: Charles Romax Finch, Jr.
Gender: Male
Age: 45
Apparent Age: 26-28
Date/Place of Birth: Tuscaloosa, Alabama (1964)
Species: Vampire
Coven: Enashe
Appearance: Poor Romax, he’s so bland with his scholarly face that could be considered attractive-if you took notice of it. His nose is straight and long (maybe a touch too long) with his glasses usually sliding down towards the tip. Romax is perpetually clean-shaven, which makes the white scar running vertically from just above his chin to just below it very apparent as it stands out against his tan skin. The only noticeable feature he has would probably be his eyes, which are a dreamy blue behind his glasses. He wears his black hair in a short, conservative cut, just above his ears. Usually, he wears trousers of nice material in varying shades of grey, a plain black or brown belt, highly polished black or brown shoes, and either a polo or a button-down long-sleeved shirt. When it’s cool enough, he will wear a sports jacket over it. He never wears shorts, but has been known to throw on a pair of jeans and/or boots. While a bit taller than you might think at first, just over six-foot-one, he has a soft-spoken presence that makes him seem smaller.
[EDIT: August 29, 2009] Romax’s appearance has changed subtly during his time in Demaitre. There is still little about him that would stand out in a crowd, but he does look different. His eyes, the misty and dreamy blue of them, seem murkier and colder these days. His skin is paler, the tan he had carried for years, despite the lack of sun in his life, finally seeming to fade away. The glasses, which had been superfluous since his turning anyway, have been done away with. It is more common to see him with a day’s worth (or more) of stubble. Even the way he carries himself has changed—more loosely, with an almost catlike care and nimbleness. Romax has always been built more powerfully than your average history professor, but the way he handles himself seems to emphasize the power in his muscular, six-one frame. The air he used to have, the one that diminished his presence, has shifted dramatically. Rather than being invisible, as he used to be, he holds himself with more confidence, more… menace, almost. Other than those types of intangibles, his physical appearance and dress have also changed slightly. He dresses more casually, wearing fewer sportscoats and khakis and more leather jackets and jeans. All in all, he looks and carries himself with more authority, more like a boxer than a history teacher.
History: It’s a curse being the only child of two beautiful parents with high expectations. Charles and Susan Finch were your typical golden people. Charles was an All-American football player in high school who went on to win a national championship in his senior year at the University of AlabamaSusan Finch was his high school sweetheart who followed him to UA and majored in accounting. She worked for a small bank in Tuscaloosa, but gradually moved her way up to become the head of accounting for the bank’s parent company. Both of them expected Charles Romax Finch Jr. to become even better than they did, which was a rather tall order for him. Naturally, he played football since the time he could walk, following his father in that respect. He attended UA on scholarship and majored in history. Although he attempted a career in the NFL, he did not last long in the league despite having had a solid college career. Instead, he got his Master’s degree in history and was going to work on a PhD.
And then, in a fit of rebellion against his vanilla life, he stopped. He dropped out of school at twenty-four and joined the Army, something he had always thought about doing. His parents were shocked and disappointed. But Junior was tired of walking the well-trod path his parents had, and figured he could be a hero. It was about that time that Desert Storm began and Romax was sent to Kuwait. He wasn’t over there long. Only a month into his tour, he was shot in the shoulder and shipped back to the States to receive treatment. Once he healed, he was stuck behind a desk, a paper-pusher. Not exactly what he had been hoping for. So, once his enlistment ended a year later, he left the military and began a long, wandering path north, looking for excitement.
While working at a club as a bouncer, he met Nicole, a hard-partying twentysomething with wild ways. Romax, naturally, was fascinated. Their relationship began when he had to throw her out of the club and she went after him. Nice way to start off. They fought hard, screwed hard, and partied hard. Nicole was a curious thing, one minute she couldn’t stand him and the next she’d be thinking forever. As it turned out, when she said forever, she meant it too. After a wild night of booze, a variety of drugs, and lots of sex, she told him she was a vampire. Romax, plastered by that point and high to boot, laughed at her. Pissed, she dove at him, ripping his throat open. She fully intended to let him die, but as she began to sober up a bit, she went into her ‘forever’ mood and turned him instead. When he woke up, a vampire, she expected him to be happy as she explained all the nuances of a vampiric life. Instead, he threw her out a window and into the sunlight.
Finally, Romax decided the wild life wasn’t for him after all. He moved to Demaitre after hearing that it was some kind of a haven for vampires. He got a job at the university teaching history full-time and a small apartment a few blocks away. At the moment, he’s at a crossroads, not sure how he’s supposed to live. Should he be underground, feasting on humans, or above living with them? He enjoys the thrill of feeding, sometimes misses the wild nights he used to have. But he feels guilt too, and doesn’t like killing his prey. Is it possible for him to just be?
[EDIT: August 29, 2009] A distinct change has come over Romax’s personality as of late. Though he has lived as much like a human as possible, now the side of him that adhered to human morals seems to be losing ground. More and more often he is not satisfied with simply taking enough from mortals to survive. Instead, he has grown more and more sadistic towards his prey and increasingly sees humans as a food source rather than as his peers. With help from older, more experienced vampires, Romax has also begun experimenting and exercising with his powers more and has seen them expand accordingly. Using his abilities used to bother him, now he sees it as almost like a game, and finds pleasure in the control his powers give him.
