Title: Canada and Law Enforcement

Alright everyone I'm working on a new character, yes I realize I've so many already, but just one more...
Alright while I've got lots brewing in my head for this character I find that I can find very little on law enforcement agencies in Canada, so any and all help that anyone can provide in helping me learn more about Canada's law system, I would be forever grateful!

When you say agencies, what do you mean exactly? Something like the FBI and CIA? Or something completely different? I was simply wondering...

I second Pandora's questions. ^.^'
Generally...well, a big city like Demaitre (Toronto, Ottawa, etc) would have its own local police. Otherwise it'd be a municipal police force (eg.
Chatham-Kent Police Force), which covers several smaller towns/cities in an area.
Then there's police at a provincial level (the
OPP, for example). Then there's federal/national, which would be the
Mounties, among others... There is a sort of Canadian FBI that...someone...on the mod team knows about...I think it was Naffie. I can't recall the name myself at the moment...
Ah, nix that, stumbled upon it hotlinked to the Mountie article-- the
CSIS.
And...generic Wikipedia Canadian Law Enforcement link:
clickie.
Hope that helps. :heh:

Just to add to that, the RCMP(Royal Canadian Mounted Police) is the equivalent of the FBI... I asked people... :)
Marcus - February 13, 2007 02:43 PM (GMT)
Ennh...I keep being told that the CSIS (which is a division of the RCMP) is the equivalent, but now that I take a look at what the FBI actually does, I suppose the RCMP overall (Mounties, in my last post) would be a better fit. :heh:
For some reason I thought the FBI was involved more with international relations than homeland stuff. Guess I haven't been paying enough attention to the movies I've seen which feature them. :P

Well thanks for the info just the same. And I'm sorry I worded my question strangely, but basically what I was going for is that I want to have a mortal homicide detective.
I know all that entails here in the states, but as far as Canada goes I've got zero and I've even been poking around the Toronto police department web site and well it hasn't helped all that much.
Is there a plain clothes equivalent in Canada?
I've heard people say that Canada has less homicide than the states and well I've no clue if that's true, but if it was, well I considered the fact that there might not be an equivalent.

Hmm. I dunno off the top of my head, but I'll do some asking around. My boyfriend has an aunt that works in police dispatch, and my brother in general would probably know just 'cause that's where some of his interests lie, heh. I'll let you know what I find out. :)

When I was working Counterintelligence (back in the day) we usually worked with the RCMP whenever we had to cross federal/national lines and had to coordinate joint operations.
I never had to coordinate with any village or township level law enforcement. The mounties usually were our first stop and usually last as they had the charter to handle whatever needs we had.
Hope this helps.

>.> A Homecide detectice would pretty well be the same as in the states... though an interesting choice may be someone less law enforcement connected such as a *forgets fancy name for doctors who work in morgues*...

Well since I've written up most of the profile I don't want to go back on it now. Besides I remember someone not too long ago created a character that was already a coroner and well I’d just rather have a homicide detective all things considered…
And thanks again everyone!
