The usual small pieces of trash and paper were throw into the air, dancing in circles on their way down as the subway train came speeding around the turn. This late at night, very few braved this particular form of public transportation, keeping to the safer feel of the above-ground options. It was this fear of the subway that kept the taxi drivers in business.
Of the few riders that had chosen this cheap alternative to expensive "safety," one really stuck out from the elderly couple trying to get home, the three teenagers who looked like they were in some kind of gang, and the well-dressed man, reading his newspaper, just trying to get home to his family. This stranger was definitely strange: He had an arrogance about him, white muscleshirt and red plaid pants, both skin-tight, and a general shocking appearance, not to mention his extremely pale skin that reflected the flickering fluerescent lighting oddly. It was obvious that he was American.
One of the teenagers whispered something to the two, and they all smiled evilly. The stranger just exhaled in annoyance as they stood up and started to circle him.
"Check out this guy. Must be Halloween in his head," said the one who seemed to be the gang leader, getting in the stranger's face, "I didn't know that everyday was Halloween in 'fucktard land,' but then again, I live in the real world, freak." The other two followed his lead and began to berate and try to intimidate the stranger.
"What's the matter, fag? You deaf, or just stupid?" the second spat in the stranger's face.
Finally the stranger spoke up. "I'll tell you what: How about we move to the next car and settle this like men?" he laughed to himself at his choice of words.
"You're funeral, pal." laughed the leader, beckonning the stranger to lead the way, in a mock-bow.
"You won't live to see your grandmother's funeral." the stranger thought to himself as he passed the trio, then past the elderly couple, making the old woman shiver.
The stranger walked slowely to the middle of the empty car, then cracked his neck for the effect that he liked so much. The three teens followed close behind, small knives flicking open, ready to jump the stranger.
The stranger laughed out loud at the click of the small, metal knives. "Anything to make yourselves feel safe..." he said, his back still turned as the lights flickered and went out.
When the train began to slow, the stranger re-entered the original subway car, walking past the elderly couple and standing next to the man reading his paper.
"Hey buddy, you dropped this." The man handed a wallet to the stranger.
"Oh, thanks, man. Would have missed it if you hadn't told me." the stranger replied, taking the wallet and putting it in his back pocket.
"Didn't see any ID in it; Whats your name, stranger?" the man asked innocently from behind his paper.
"Mackey." replied the stranger simply.
"First or last?" pried the stranger.
"Name's just Mackey." the stranger said, stepping through the door and vanishing into the crowd.
Maybe this town had something that Mackey couldn't find anywhere else in the world. He was beginning to lose hope. But then again, it shouldnt be too hard for a young vampire to find some fun in Demaitre.
