Title: Nevermind the quality: feel the width
Description: how wide is your Fall collection?
elderford - October 15, 2005 10:19 AM (GMT)
Including cds, and dvds, mine is
0.54m
A little over half a metre of pure Fall.
qonox - October 16, 2005 02:03 AM (GMT)
I wish you could measure mp3 files because that's all I own of The Fall!
Martin - October 18, 2005 08:48 AM (GMT)
But does that mean you are naughty and don't buy the actual records?
SteveHamilton - October 18, 2005 09:53 AM (GMT)
If you played all my Fall stuff one after the other it would take 3.5 DAYS to listen to. It's 6.85 GB according to i-tunes.
Has anybody got more than a month?
Mohican Karl - October 27, 2005 10:21 PM (GMT)

Jean-Baptiste Clamence - November 17, 2005 02:02 PM (GMT)
'The Fall' + 'La Chute (Meuthen Bilingual Texts edition)' = roughly 1.8 inches

Go on, play them all...you know you want to!
duckpin236 - April 19, 2008 07:17 PM (GMT)
35 inches of CDs but I can't measure the complete set of 12" singles because I stuck them on the wall instead of using wall paper[I did take the LPs out thank goodness] I guess about 10 inches of vinyl counting the 12" singles...and maybe one inch of 45s

Yeah, that's next to figure out, just start with #1 and I'll see everyone on X days.
Sigh, pales to others, 2 books plus 50+ CDs... 25 in = 63.5 cm
GraemeLovesPinkLady - January 27, 2011 07:42 PM (GMT)
This is an old photo of my Fall cds - it's since been added to:

Again, an old photo. This time, it's vinyl:
delmore - January 27, 2011 07:51 PM (GMT)
22" with the TSNG box. Looks like Graeme's got at least a yard there.
flickeringlexicon - January 27, 2011 11:23 PM (GMT)
Those pics may be old, but they are great, GLPL. :)
GraemeLovesPinkLady - January 28, 2011 01:42 AM (GMT)
^^ They're so old, I only had one (1) Pink Lady poster back then. My camera has since died. It left a suicide note saying:
"I'd rather die than take any more pictures for you. I am a vehicle for art".
I had to admire its sense of honour, so I gave it a full funeral and buried it in the back garden next to my non Fall liking ex-next door neighbours.

:D
I did notice the Pink Lady poster... so, we can assume you have even more Fall records now than when that pic was taken?
GraemeLovesPinkLady - January 28, 2011 02:21 AM (GMT)
^^ Hai. For singles:

...and for LPs - well in a fit of epic sadness I got two copies of YFOC. It's a bit of a one off - after all what kind of fail clown buys two copies of the same record?

Actually I think it should be a rule for this forum: the opinion of anybody who buys two copies of a record can be safely ignored because they're obviously idiots. Anyway, here's the back covers:
flickeringlexicon - January 28, 2011 02:55 AM (GMT)
I don't know, some of those vinyl YFOCs weren't pressed too well, IMO. If one copy develops a lot of surface noise (or even came that way), you have a backup. I'm sure you'd have a hard time finding a vinyl copy now.
GraemeLovesPinkLady - January 28, 2011 03:03 AM (GMT)
Piccadilly Records had a vinyl copy in last time I looked under F in the indie section (which to our, and no doubt The Fall's eternal shame, is where they reside in there) and that would be about uh...three and a bit days ago when I bought This Nation's Saving Grace for the fifth time. On the other hand though, Piccadilly Records is not your typical record shop. In the real world, it could prove trickier.
Just between you and me, and here in the basement where nobody looks I think I can get away with it, but...the cd version of YFOC is *much* superior to the vinyl version, both sonically and aesthetically - not only does it sound better on cd, it's purer artistically to have a nine track album with nine killer tracks than an eleven track album with two fillers.
flickeringlexicon - January 28, 2011 03:10 AM (GMT)
The only vinyl I've heard from YFOC are the 3 vinyl-only tracks (inc. Cowboy Gregori). I've both MP3s and FLACs of those 3 songs... and I'm unhappy with both versions, for different reasons. Even if I wanted to find the vinyl here, it would be difficult, I reckon...
It's hard for me to measure my Fall CDs (I only have one LP left)... cos the discs are spread out all over... :(

Is this true, Graeme?
If so, I now have to buy the CD as well, being as I only have the vinyl officially purchased, plus the pre-release DL copied to CDR.
Mind you, I like the extra tracks a lot, but they do upset what was in my mind the ideal running order. Better they were tagged on the end, so giving the option of cutting short the listen.
*For basement readers only....* :D
GraemeLovesPinkLady - January 28, 2011 08:05 AM (GMT)
I've only had about three hours sleep, so forgive me for being a bit vague, but yes, I think so. One thing you must remember about the leaked mp3s is that they were at a bit rate of 320 kbps. CDs run at 1411 kbps. Therefore you can see that when it comes to the digital iteration of YFOC, you've heard less than a quarter of it. That extra bit rate gives detail, clarity, positioning of instruments in a mix and "body".
The LP...well, it's a good pressing as it goes, particularly for The Fall, but YFOC exploits the capabilities of cds admirably. You've heard about the loudness war and compression. Well, it's got waaaaaay out of hand, but the reason why people first went down this route is that compression gives oomph and power to a mix - for example, that definitive Motown drum sound is entirely due to compression...well, engineering and the drummer themselves have a lot to do with it, but anyway...that drum sound that leaps out of the mic and grabs you...that's compression used artfully. Other examples would be Phil Spector and especially Joe Meek.
YFOC uses compression well. It's a harder, more rhythmic beast in its cd incarnation...you know, it's insistent and doesn't let go, merciless even - if only Perverted By Language was produced this way *sigh*. Furthermore, and this is an inescapable fact of life, but the tracks at the end of each side of the vinyl suffer from slight distortion, due to the reduced circumference that the needle travels (sound quality for LPs deteriorates throughout the side, whereas cds are consistent throughout).
Anyway, others will argue the opposite, but that's how I feel, even if I don't think I've explained it all that well. Hope it helps nonetheless. Must go now.

Thanks Greame, and sorry to wake you.
See, I'm not at all technically minded, so your description is invaluable - I couldn't cope with details and indepth analysis - so thanks, my question is answered.
YFOC on CD is quite cheap now, so I think I'll join the multi-ownership-gang now. At least I can try to spot the difference.
GraemeLovesPinkLady - January 28, 2011 08:29 AM (GMT)
Good man - one thing I forgot to mention is that you can't use the same level of compression on vinyl that you can do on cd. The needle would jump out of the groove if you did. This is why there are no Perfume LPs - they just couldn't be manufactured in any form that would play due to the hyper compression that is used.
Really must go now, lol.
delmore - January 28, 2011 04:53 PM (GMT)
G's right. You know he's right so get yourself the CD.
It will get you There and you will know the difference. :)
