Title: 2 of what instrument in The Fall?
Description: Would you like a change?

Martin - October 12, 2005 02:54 PM (GMT)
Big Chief Mango Chutney suggests a second guitarist. What would you like to hear on the next tour/album? Someone to help MES out when he doesn't feel like singing? A return to the famous 2 drum setup? What do you think? 2 basses? Been done often, trivia fans?

Replies below...

Spazzy Bystander - October 12, 2005 03:18 PM (GMT)
The 2 drums setup was before my time, or something. Two guitarists allows laziness, and doesn't add much you can't do with pedals & a decent soundman.

Voted drums.

Dice Man - October 12, 2005 03:27 PM (GMT)
I've voted for "fine as it is". But - one suggestion: What about additional instruments in general?

It would depend on what the next album will sound like. If it features more songs in that "Midnight In Aspen" or "Early Days Of Channel Führer"-mood I could imagine occasionally violins or a trumpet. I'm sure THE FALL could integrate them without sounding ambitious and/or dull.

Martin - October 12, 2005 03:32 PM (GMT)
Well, they could bring back Dave Bush to do those sound effects thingies...

Dice Man - October 12, 2005 03:41 PM (GMT)
If two guitars - what about an acoustic and an electric one?

BEZENBY - October 12, 2005 03:47 PM (GMT)
I went for drums but things are interesting when the Fall have two guitars on the go too.

Hench - October 12, 2005 05:04 PM (GMT)
I'd like to see more crummy handheld tape players held up to microphones and/or Mad Professor doing live mixing.

Megaphone - where is it ?

clayts - October 12, 2005 05:44 PM (GMT)
Extra Bontempi organ for Mark, so he doesn't mess up Elena's settings all the time....

clayts - October 12, 2005 05:45 PM (GMT)
That big red and white drum from Paris was nice...Mark had fun with that by all accounts

Mere Pseud. - October 12, 2005 08:14 PM (GMT)
voted for 2 drums, probably for nostalgic reasons

Dice Man - October 12, 2005 08:26 PM (GMT)
First I was thinking about voting for 2 drums, too. Like these recordings very much. But then and after another listening to "Fall Heads Roll" it came to mind that Spencer is already two drummers in one person...

Only just noticed this poll... I'm tempted to say two of everything for a laugh.. but that is silly so I'll just stick with my original notion of two guitarists.

Anyone know what two bassists sound like?

That's a serious question btw, not the start of a crap joke.

"my original notion of two guitarists":- makes it sound like I was the first person ever to come up with such a fanciful and revolutionary idea. Erm, I wasn't... incase you were wondering.

The Eccles Connection - October 13, 2005 05:35 AM (GMT)
I think they should bring in Steve Hillage on guitar as the band needs to move into a prog-rock/pychedelic phase.....

I would like to see a free jazz saxophone player - someone like Ken Vandermark or Archie Shepp

The bands percussion could be added to with marimba and xylophone - someone like Evelyn Glennie or Partick Moore

And of course Gaz from Salford on backing vocals

Eleni to take over on Lead Vocals and Smith to take over on keyboards and not sing at all....

I am of course extracting the micturant....

And I was really keen on your ideas too until you said that... especially that last one. :o

I'm not sure that the world is ready for a band containing the extraordinary talents of both Patrick Moore AND Gaz?! :)

Are they any good? They sound quite interesting....

Not many bands can ever have released a 52 track double album. :applaud:

Don't know why I'm clapping though.. it could be 52 tracks of worthless drivel for all I know. <_<

fallfandave - October 13, 2005 07:55 AM (GMT)
2 keyboards please :D

I refer you to the Manchester Hacienda video - Hanley and Burns, esp. Ludd Gang and Lay of the Land

Also I refer you to the Ding/Trafford combo in April 04, prior to Ding's transfer to PJ Harvey United, and Leatham/Helal in London Dec 98 :)

Smudger - October 13, 2005 10:38 AM (GMT)
I agree that two drummers aren't required with the current supreme master of the sticks on board.
It's fine as it is.
Hmmm two guitars though....

Smudger - October 13, 2005 10:45 AM (GMT)
Or one of those squeezy "parp parp" hooters for MES might be good.

chrisgoodhead - October 13, 2005 11:19 AM (GMT)
Two Mark E Smiths.

A nice one and a nasty one.

One could kick stuff over, fiddle with things, not bother singing much and storm off stage in a huff.

The other could exchange the odd smile with fellow band members, help set up the microphones that the nasty one has thrown everywhere and stay on stage singing the songs to the best of his ability. And come back on for encores.

Then everybody would be happy.

I whole-heartedly endorse this suggestion.

My mum used to squeeze her hooter ( ) when it was time for family Hayward to tuck in to one of her veritable feasts. Gongs ? Who needs 'em ?

Curious Yellow - October 13, 2005 01:22 PM (GMT)
I think Mark should wear a complete one-man-band outfit.

I have that one somewhere on CD too... just not on DVD. It gives you some idea of how musically astute my ear is when I tell you that I didn't actually notice that there were two basses at all. :ohdear:
