Title: Blindness
Description: (merged)

There's been a thread about this, but surprisingly no poll.
What's your favourite version and why do you like it more than the others?

i voted for this one. it made me laugh with recognition - this sums up a great deal of my fall 'listening'!

Gaz - January 5, 2005 11:38 PM (GMT)
I like the version that happened before my very eyes a couple of months back...
But then i would, wouldent i?

Stephen - January 6, 2005 07:14 PM (GMT)
All ye who've voted so far, why did you go for the option you chose?

nlgbbbblth - January 6, 2005 07:44 PM (GMT)
I voted for the Peel session version
for this poll - and it was one of the 3 tracks I voted for in his Festive 50

The Eccles Connection - January 6, 2005 08:01 PM (GMT)
Having now heard the Voiceprint version courtesy of the Wire I have to say it takes the vote marginally - something a tad earthier about it.....

Itchload - January 6, 2005 08:04 PM (GMT)
I voted for version in my head which I'm convinced will be the version on the new Fall album--

starts out with the more laid back creepy electronic drone of the Interim version, goes on for about 2, 3 minutes, then goes into a "day in the life" style transition and suddenly breaks into the dirty loud bass-heavy Peel version. Entire thing lasts about 10 minutes.

What makes you think they'll record this again?

Itchload - January 9, 2005 08:54 PM (GMT)
I've just assumed all the Interim songs will be on the next album "rehearsals + live"..like rehearsals for the next album.

athlete not cured - January 9, 2005 10:38 PM (GMT)
Peel version by a long chalk so far

BEZENBY - January 9, 2005 11:02 PM (GMT)
Peel session version

Interim version is rather good too, Blind Man demo is in the same vein....some subsequent live versions are up to it tooo

which probably means that this is one of THe Fall's better recent tracks - eh?

fallfandave - January 9, 2005 11:55 PM (GMT)
i went with the peel version.....2nd i would go for the demo...3rd -the interim one....live versions...well whatever...different scores for different performances i suppose....

kiespijn - January 11, 2005 06:34 PM (GMT)
live at stourbridge Rock Cafe was the dirtiest, even if restrained - tension in that restraint.

Tightness of the Peel Session, with the atonal melodica of the Interim version and lyrics from live versions, particularly the high pitched "My Eyesight Was Fucked" from one the recent NYC gigs).

Bad CB - January 12, 2005 03:24 PM (GMT)
I vote for "Metal Gods" by Judas Priest, from which they nicked the whole tune!!

(It's available on the 'British Steel' LP should you wish to check)

R. Totale - January 12, 2005 03:41 PM (GMT)
I went for Peel, but the version at the Academy was stunning (wouldn't you agree Stephen?), although harder to assess objectively. Arrangement-wise it was identical to the Peel version.

Yes, agreed.
In fact, I think – shock horror – that the Peel version is the weakest of the three released. Seems to lack texture somehow.

Granny On Bongos - January 12, 2005 11:11 PM (GMT)
Haven't heard it live yet.

The Interim version gets it for me. Cheapo keyboard discord.

As it happens I think Blindness could be the greatest Fall track of all time - it has everything you could ever want in a Fall song, everything you associate with Fall music. It's taken nearly 30 years but I truly believe this is what MES has been building up to.

Watch him go and fuck it up on the next LP.

Maybe Granny meant in general, not with this song in particular.

I wonder whether the Ronney song (suitably extended and developed) will be on the next album and I have my doubts, though no-one else seems to.

No, I meant Blindness on the new LP. Yes, it is a big assumption I suppose. It's just that the two released versions seem like snatches of a longer song. Having said that, the full Blindness could well be out on the Complete Peel session before the new Fall LP comes out anyway.

I bet Sparta #umpteen will be on the new LP.

And I still think Blindness will be viewed as the definitive Fall track by future historians. and me, now.

I can NOT sit still when listening to Blindness. I am glad you all aren't here to witness my "epileptic duck" routine.

BTW, someone posted a link on here to a Peel show archive that had the "demo" version of Blindness (Blind Man?) Would that still be around somewhere online and does anybody know where?

I think it was Job Search demo rather than Blind Man, I did have the link to that and the JP session, now where did I put it ?

athlete not cured - January 15, 2005 06:56 PM (GMT)
Not saved in my favourites here must be at work where it would make more sense ;)

gorillabat - January 15, 2005 06:58 PM (GMT)
I think Job Search appeard somewhere for a while--someone posted a link to the final Fall Peel Sesh and it was included with the other files, and I actually have a copy of it, but I am positive someone posted a link to this other show with Blind Man.

I recall the show was over an hour and they pinpointed where in the show the song appeared. It was within the last couple of weeks I think.

athlete not cured - January 15, 2005 07:01 PM (GMT)
In that case far more recent than I was thinking of and I have Blind Man plus I managed to get the other tracks mentioned ;)

Yeah I know.

Great track anyway, pretty far in the broadcast. I had to listen to some really obscure shit first, that wasn't to my taste.

waterfoot_dandy - January 19, 2005 01:37 AM (GMT)
I got a strange one in the mail for no apparent reason. I don't know which that is, but the sound is fantastic, the performance is fantastic, and then it leaves off the ending from the Peel session that is the best part of the whole song. It kinda weirded me out.

I guess all of you know what I'm talking about but the thing is except for the omitting the hook bit it would be the best version. Oddest mystery since the neighborohood of infinity.

It is still the time of the giant moths.

what's this mystery you are referring to?

are you the same waterfoot dandy that took pics of the band for Grotesque? I always liked that name. where does it come from, how did you get it?

If you're referring to the one on the free Wire cd, that's actually the Interim version...

JonN - January 22, 2005 11:31 AM (GMT)
I can't vote because, for me, the Peel version exactly ties with the live versions I've seen. Also, the Interim version is the only worthwhile track on that sorry apology for an "album".

The Peel version of "What About Us?" kills the Interim version several times over.

Incidentally, I saw the other day that there is an incorrect setlist in the gigography for that last Islington Academy gig I saw. They did not play a medley of Wrong Place with Grass Grow, they did the 2 songs separately, as I said in the setlist I posted at the time, which was noted down as the gig unfolded. Conway should look back through the forum records to correct this.

josef - February 3, 2005 11:46 PM (GMT)
The best version i've heard is galway, it's split into two parts - 3 minute instrumental then a thundering 7 minutes with vox - unbelievable!

It sounds like Witness The Fitness by Roots Manuva as well!

Blindness is a great song (I went for the last option, as a combination of the Peel Session version and the storming live version they did at the Carling Academy in Liverpool would be perfect :) )
