Title: Radio play for The Fall
Description: Examples listed here

Own up-
Who phoned the Danny Baker Breakfast Show (BBC London) with that great Fall story this morning?
A tale was told of a Fall show, where 5 minutes in, MES halted the proceedings to announce an impromptu "Band Meeting". The whole group promptly skulked off stage via the Fire Exit for a conflab. A few minutes later there came the sound of knocking as the band requested to be re-admitted...
Baker talked of the Fall with some affection, as he should, as he's often claimed to have "discovered them"...

[Original post about Jonathan Ross on Radio Two]
He's playing Clasp Hands!!!!! :applaud: ^_^
Martin - September 10, 2005 11:15 AM (GMT)
Why don't we have a thread for all radio plays we spot?
Vvillager - September 10, 2005 12:08 PM (GMT)
The Fall will be on the J Ross show soon.

Is that pukka or just wishful thinking?? I listen to JR most weeks but I dont want to risk missing that one!

Sounds good.
Earlier on, talking about the quality of new material from veteran artists, they praise Bowie, rolling stones, and then The Fall
jonathan: "but come on, they're hardly in the same class"
DJAsh - September 10, 2005 08:07 PM (GMT)
I took that comment as meaning that The Fall aren't in the same "veteran " class as Bowie etc.
It seemed to be Ross' assistant producer who was singing The Fall's praises , although I think I heard Ross actually admit to liking them. They're all at it ! ;)
doon - September 11, 2005 02:10 PM (GMT)
He played 11 Bowie songs on that show, anyone know why? (I know he ALWAYS plays at least one)

It's just idle thinking. However, we now have Jonathan Ross and Frank Skinner singing the praises of The Fall. It's not unfeasible that one of them might get him on as guest. The Fall could certainly be the guest band on the Ross show.
Wretched Timesheeter - September 11, 2005 10:16 PM (GMT)
OK, so this is REALLY pushing it now, but still... you can hear the (prematurely faded-out) studio version of Blindness on Playlouder's radio thing, right now (about 54 minutes in):
http://www.playlouder.com/feature/+playlouder-radio-0/Shhh! I've got to stop ruining the new LP! :D
thefrenzexperiment - September 11, 2005 10:54 PM (GMT)
Nice one!
Not sure about the bit where it changes into the Black Beauty theme though, but I'm sure it will grow on me....!
They said the album had some "rubbish" on it (obviously nonsense...!!) and also that MES looks like a "crocodile with no teeth", which I think is both rather insulting and factually entirely incorrect.
The intro is stunning, with the bass getting louder and clearer after a few bars, but I miss the double-tracked distorted vocal part of the Interim version. Still, you can't have everything....
:)
The Man Whose Bed Diminished - September 12, 2005 09:20 AM (GMT)
A massive thanks for that one. :D :applaud: Doesn't it sound great, and even clearer that the Interim and Peel Session versions.
I'm also sure it'll grow on me even more, and here's hoping.
I ignored the two DJ's, who sounded like really bad tin-pot local radio DJ's, or even worse student radio DJ's. What did they mean "leave the rubbish on", I don't know what Fall albums they've heard, but they don't sound like the same ones I have. You need all the chapters of the book to tell the whole story. As for the new album I suppose we'll have to see, but I doubt their correct.
This for them (and for cutting it short with the Black Beauty theme). :finger:
Wretched Timesheeter - September 12, 2005 02:48 PM (GMT)
The way the whole production changes after the intro, that's pure Fall. Man, that beat! Come to think of it, this studio Blindness reminds me of MES's mix of Wipe That Sound - the same fat rhythm section and sparse sound. Shaping up to be quite a diverse record.
malevich - September 12, 2005 06:11 PM (GMT)
If I hadn't heard it before it would sound good - but of all the things they could have done with this song, they recorded this . Half-arsed vocal, flattened bass sound, the whole thing sounds like it's had the energy sucked out of it - which is quite attractive in a certain way, it's all nauseaous and scratchy - but next to the Peel version it just sounds pathetic.

I dont know....
to the best of my knowledge Jeremy Vine was the first Radio 2 presenter to play The Fall on a R2 show, in the old Jimmy Young lunchtime slot (unless anyone knows better...) so theres another one - he really likes them. How about MES as a kind of "agony uncle", dispensing advice on the Vine show???
clayts - September 12, 2005 07:32 PM (GMT)
I personally think it rocks a lot harder than the Peel version, not least due to the minimalist guitars from Ben which slowly but surely creep up on you (very similar to how it's been done live in recent times). Afore ye know it, Ben's instrument is all over you like a rash, whilst Steve's bassline just drives the whole thing on and on and on....stormer :)
Non-Fall fans who've heard it think it sounds brilliant...
malevich - September 12, 2005 07:53 PM (GMT)
OK I take back 'pathetic', and regarding the bass sound, it is of course on a crappy sub 96k radio thingy. Don't you think the vocal on the Peel session sound much more powerful though? - that was what convinced me he can still do a great performance when he wants to.
Martin - September 12, 2005 07:59 PM (GMT)
I think the vocal was at its best on the Peel session...but I think he puts a lot more nuances into his voice nowadays then in recent years. He has learned that he hasn't got the range or consistent power of yore...and I think he is moving into a more conversational and subtle way of vocalising. The lyrics, too, I see as more straightforward, but never trite nor obvious. The man is a genius of our times.
malevich - September 12, 2005 08:14 PM (GMT)
On the documentary he said something like he was only just getting good at singing. I like the new vocal stylings on the whole but to be honest my favourite perfomances of the decade are Mod mock goth, Peel Blindness, Dr Bucks, Two Librans, the ones where he really 'goes for it'. Although Last Commands shows how the softer vocal style can work brilliantly

Yeah, I do think the vocals are pretty weak on this particular incarnation also, especially next to the Peel one. Still, maybe he suddenly wakes up at the end on the full album version, or something. That would be good.

Great stuff, I'll take any version of Blindness as it comes, thank you!
Ooh, I'm really getting excited about the new LP.
I wouldn't knock DJ's Tosser and Arsehole too much, at least they've played the record.
Mr. Hooblah - September 12, 2005 10:26 PM (GMT)
How is it that the Official Fall Website doesn't even get a chunk of Fall's new album when a cheesy radio station does? Something just doesn't sit right...dontcha think? But, superb song nonetheless which got me real excited for Head's Roll.
I Hate The Fall Messageboard - September 12, 2005 10:26 PM (GMT)
love the intro: walking bass!
but then what happens?
fallfandave - September 13, 2005 06:52 AM (GMT)
It's hardly surprising all this interest, The Fall have really matured.
:P
marksturdy - September 13, 2005 08:28 AM (GMT)
I sincerely hope MES doesn't end up getting interviewed on either Ross or Skinner's show... they've got to be the two worst interviewers in the world, ever. Neither of them seems capable of showing any real interest in their guests, they ask everyone the same tedious questions, and both of them (Skinner in particular) seem only to have guests on in the first place so they can have a stooge to prop up their stand-up routine. Utter shitbags, the pair of 'em.
Although having said that, Morrissey wasn't too bad on Jonathan Ross a while back.
fallfandave - September 13, 2005 08:39 AM (GMT)
actually, it's true... neither are Michael Parkinson.
sludge hai choi - September 13, 2005 11:12 AM (GMT)

mes seems inhibited

There are quite a few which could be merged already...otherwise, it all gets a wee bit bitty...

Wossythree quarters of the way down........
Their Time has come again.
Baddiel and Skinner and now this.
Soon there'll be Manc Skallies on Documentaries saying: 'Best Band in the World, mate.' as The Fall take the stage at a packed out MEN Arena and Teenage Girls Beatle Scream to every MES utterance.
Or maybe they'll just play the Academy.

Jimbo Smalls - September 18, 2005 01:08 PM (GMT)
Stewart Lee just played "Trust In Me" to close his show "One Way Single-Parent Family Favourites" on Resonance 104.4fm.
Two chords, both of which were very good.
I can't wait for this album! Whoever was singing on that track was doing a very good job.
This was followed by the words "Calling All Pensioners, calling all pensioners, this is Deptford Action Group for the Elderly" as Glenn Miller's "In The Mood" and the next programme faded up.

Well, this wasn't on the radio here in the US, but Don Letts has a new film, called Punk Attitude I think, it's been on IFC here the last couple of months. The intro for Elastic Man is heard, strangely, whilst the people onscreen are talking about the Sniffin' Glue fanzine, about 37 minutes in from what I recall.

Pacyfying joint on BBC 6music in mid-afternoon. It's preety good. Looking forward to the new album.
