Title: In A Hole vs. A Part Of America Therein, 1981

Seminal live.

TommyTourette - September 6, 2005 08:24 PM (GMT)
In a Hole hands down no questions asked. The simple volume of classic tracks played really well live make this my favorite live fall album.

dogomehl - September 7, 2005 01:42 PM (GMT)
smash

For the famous introduction alone, A Part Of America. The performances in both are pretty good. There are better gigs on bootlegs, though.

Mere Pseud. - September 7, 2005 08:26 PM (GMT)
These are definitely seminal live records.

The last CD release of In A Hole gained a lot via sound improvements and has many classic songs on it. Nevertheless A Part Of America Therein remains my favourite official live record.

APOAT gets it for its transcendent NWRA.

... And the definitive version of Totally Wired, I might add. :applaud:

I'll happily break that tie. (For the moment...)

APOAT contains some stellar perfomances, there is no doubt.

But In a Hole (particularly as released as double CD--"In A Hole +") is the best live document of the best rock band ever. At their peak throughout: dead fucking top goddamn form.

Seems like when they were on foreign soil during that era-- for the recording of parts of Hex in Iceland to the live In a Hole gigs caught in New Zealand...they conjured up magnificent art in those places.

In a Hole for me - greater variety of material and the band just seemed to be at their most majestic - close decision though.

Rock On, Tommy.....

In A Hole is the best live album I've ever heard by anybody. (Haven't found Live to Air in Melbourne yet) Although realizing how empty my life was before I first heard the Fall about three months (and about 70 CDs) ago, at least I got in it at a good time, ie. with the band on good form and, more to the point, with the reissues out. Slags, Slates etc is a brilliant climax.

Think this is worth getting, the Hexen Definitive -> Deer Park on it is sublime.
A Part Of America Therein has Winter, In A Hole Backdrop. My favourite version of Winter is the Peel one and In A Hole has a cracking Hard Life In Country too. In A Hole.

chris.southon - February 10, 2010 10:21 PM (GMT)
In a Hole, my favourite vinyl possession

rainmaster - February 11, 2010 01:52 AM (GMT)
I can't choose. :(

In A Hole for Backdrop, Room to Live and a stunning Slates Slags Etc.

APOAT for NWRA, Totally Wired and Cash & Carry.

Melbourne is a must-have, btw. :)

I absolutely agree. I've been listening to this particular track a lot over the last couple of months. It is, as you say, transcendental. At James brown levels of musical perfection. Awesome!

flickeringlexicon - February 11, 2010 04:10 PM (GMT)
A Part Of America Therein is my favorite Live Fall album, so that got my vote. There are many reasons why, one is: the 'Winter' on Hex isn't played too well. The bass on the Peel Box 'Winter' is so out of tune that I can't listen to that version (although I know some like it best.) The 'Winter' on APOAT? Perfect and Stellar. :)

Why, that's as good as being an egg!

APOAT for NWRA - amazingness!

Cleanville Tziabatz - April 8, 2010 01:20 AM (GMT)
Tough choice.

APOAT is such authentic Fall (but not quite as authentic as TT).

OTOH, FIAH sounds like a slightly parallel universe Fall where there was a slight accident with a time machine and all the songs came out pretty much the same, but sort of different, and yet just as good, or maybe even better.

FIAH got my vote, FWIW.

Perhaps a tweak of +/-1% might do the trick.

:D

I find Deer Park on APOAT extremely exciting. If I ever had to do a Fall DJ slot I'd start with this for sure.

Funny you should mention that. Bend Sinister sounds much better sped up by 1%, more natural, indicating that it accidentally got slowed down at some point in the original mastering process. But what is even weirder is that the troublemaker who did FIAH (I think it was originally unauthorized) is now trying to recover the earliest generation tapes upon which BS is based which will hopefully correct the speed problem on that record.

Sorry, folks.... :ohdear: :zip:

Been listening to In A hole. 100% right speed. I'll inform you about the rest of the catalogue later on.

Surprised about the results here. IAH is great, but APOAT is that much more other worldly, I adore it. The intro alone is enough to recommend it above IAH: "From the riot-torn streets etc."
