Title: Dreams about The Fall
chachacha - September 20, 2004 02:03 AM (GMT)
I had a dream last night of a gig in Hobart by the fall-Notebooks out psychiatrists.
On the way on a bus I was worried I might get cold after the gig as I was dressed in jeans and a grey tanktop-I thought to my dream self that I hope they have T-Shirts for sale.
Got there and the fall was getting ready to play but there was only about 20 people so Smith was going off to management to spread the crowd around the room so it looked like there were more people there. My dream self thought to say that this is Hobart and not many more people are likely to turn up but i kept my mouth shut for fear of winding him up.
Went to the bar. Smith slides a silver coin down the bar to me-a nickle, not a dime. He orders 2 fingers of something and says to barkeep to put it on my tab. I say it would be an honour, and think to myself perhaps I should put a caveat on this-i.e I'll pay for drinks to be consumed after the gig.
Can't tell you what the set list was or how the gig went down cos my brother woke me up to take him to the airport for a 5AM flight.
Oh, he was dressed in blue jeans and a white shirt with braiding-C & W style. Looked tidy.

oh, and all the punters were women-phew! ^_^

Sounds to me like you have a lot of unfulfilled wishes. Not only do you want the Fall to come to someplace they'll never go, but you want MES to buy you a drink!!
Maybe it means that you're not doing enough of your share to spread word of the Fall around in your area... maybe if you do something simple to raise the profile of the Fall down there, that shiny nickel of MES's - symbolic of your reward - will come to you.
I know nothing about Hobart but once the Fall learn that it is the worldwide hotbed for Fall fan activity, you'll get a five-night stand by the Fall at your choice of venue there.
chachacha - October 11, 2004 06:02 AM (GMT)
ive tried my best to up the profile-your analysis is probably spot on-i wouldnt admit to meself that i want reward except to have the fall to play in my backyard...
dreamer...nothing but a dreamer

Story was - MES turned up at my house - not the 2004 somewhat broken down version - but the rather airbrushed creature from around 1989.
He sat down and played his own CDs - then wanted to know the name of a tiny village beginning with B that the Fall played a gig at many years before. I could not help him with this enquiry.
Then his manager ( a horrible woman in black polo neck jumper) arrived. She told me her name was Spencer Bright ( I think he's a music reviewer from the Telegraph or something).
She went and got MES then marched off with him, only to return a few minutes later and order me to give them a lift. I said no - they'd have to get a taxi, MES burst out laughing and off they went.
Any other MES dreams?

None here, mercifully. Was it Bolton?

I'm by no means obsessed with Mark, just a fan of 19 years, but last night I was dreaming that I was back in college - a frequent dream - and my 8 AM morning course was going to be taught by Mark Smith. Not sure what the subject was. The class was full of interested students as The Fall had apparently rocked the college in recent memory. We were waiting for him to come in and start. Then - unfortunately - back in the real world my alarm went off and I had to get up and go to work early today.
And now I'll never know what my subconscious was about to put in front of me. Perhaps I knew I would wake soon, and it was a message to take some Fall CDs to the car to play on my commute?

I get the Bus though pretwich eveyday, and, call me obsessive...
I always look out for MES!
Never dreamed about the guy though :zip:

I had a dream recently about a twelve inch giraffe without Markings on it.
It came into my bedroom ..when I looked at it closely it had bombs strapped to itself and without warning..went off..I then awoke..
I dont think this connects with your tale.... but at least its true...

I dreamed that Mark E Smith was standing on top of a zeppelin singing "rain makes policemen no threat just because it's little specks" but when the zeppelin flew into the railway tunnel he fell off.

Very anorak-y one here. I dreamt that I was drinking with MES in my house, and we were talking about music. I asked him if he'd ever heard of Jandek, and he replied, "Yes, I've got 45 Jandek albums", and I protested, "But he's only released 35!". Mark smiled enigmatically as he put on his leather jacket and left...

On a home taped C90 off an old John Peel show I've got a bit of Peel saying "Do you ever have a night when you don't dream about the Fall?"
anonyarena - December 3, 2004 09:25 PM (GMT)
recently dreamed (dreampt?) I was looking through the paper and saw ads for nightclubs advertising that The Fall were playing a buncha dates around town.
I kept feeling like "I gotta go to all these shows" but weirdly, I was distressed that they were playing a few of the dates at the same time and so I wouldn't be able to make all the shows, because I couldn't be in two places at once.
As if The Fall could be in two places at once.

I actually dreamt about Mark last night... and I fell out of bed twice. Two lumps please, you're the bee's knees, but so am I.

FAT BLOB - December 5, 2004 02:46 AM (GMT)
my MES/FALL dream...
this was in 2000. The fall were playing this little basement space that used to exist in Chicago called 'Milk of Burgendy'. They were spending an awful looong time to set up. There were only a handful of people milling around. There was a fat girl in blue dress sitting on a ratty couch. One of the member's hauled out an old dot matrix printer...this was his instrument. After about an hour 1/2 set up time, they started to break everything down and leave. I was very pissed off. I think MES tried to kiss me with that gnarled mouth of his.
I had wrote this dream in my jounal. A year later, they were scheduled to finally play America after so many years. I was very excited, but this was the tour that didn't happen! Funny enough, this dream was EXACTLY ONE YEAR PRIOR TO THE DATE THEY WERE GOING TO PLAY CHICAGO!
repeater - December 6, 2004 04:31 AM (GMT)
now, i'm one of those types that has frequently intense, and often recurring dreams...
i recall a Fall reference once...when i had some dream about some "new records" i found...and among these "finds" were several Fall LPs that don't even exist...all with old-school M.E.S. hand done sleeves....when i woke up, ahhh
well, last night i had a very intense dream...i don't recall all the particulars (and they never seem to flow in any way other than abstract) but The Fall were going to play a show...in Orlando Fl.
i HAD to go....i arrived there with my friend/bandmate Matt and watched as some "local" band performed featuring a very attractive female vocalist...the next bit is hard to relate....
next i see M.E.S. on this small stage, performing BY HIMSELF BEFORE The Fall take the stage, on either a ragged electric violin, or some odd home-made thing that resembled a wind instrument of some sort (i can't recall which, although i clearly remember both, for some reason)..
the next thing i remember is that i was in black-face...i didn't realise until i looked in a mirror and my entire face was painted black, lips too...i then recall waking up to my alarm...then Fall-ing back to sleep where the dream picks up again...only this time i feel that i'd missed The Fall, and i'm angry and yelling, and looking for my ticket stub, hoping that i can still use it...i only find some advert that came with the ticket...i'm mortified  ...
i think after that i woke up...and that's all i remember.
now, whaddya make of that???

Stranger - March 15, 2005 09:20 PM (GMT)
I watched some of Clockwork Orange last night for the 25th time but fell asleep during it.
Then got up in the early hours, did some posts on here (it's become a habit of late), then went to sleep listening to Interim again.
A month or 2 back it was very different.
Hadn't listened to much Fall for a while.
Then it was Fall. Then Bowie (when the live albums got reissued).
Then constant Fall, again.
Possibly why I had my first Fall dream. (no not that sort, this isn't primary school y'know so stop sniggering).
I think the documentary being discussed, and possibly the gritty confrontations [verbal ones / face-offs] in C.O. (though not the violence at all, ironically considering the Brownies incident was alluded to in the most recent posts on the documentary thread! :D ) might have had some bearing on what I dreamt.
Nothing too significant to be honest...the main things I can recall were reading an even more in depth 'where are they now' a la Dave Thompson book, reading that Craig was doing rather well for himself as some sort of shipping manager or something. Whatever he is really doing, I wish him well anyway.
Steve Hanley was in it, in person - possibly as his comments on MES were in that thread.
Don't get me wrong, while I did sort of grow up with (at least from the early 90's when I became a fan) the Craig / Hanley line up, I've enjoyed the newer line-ups just as much in many ways.
Anyway, twas a bit weird.
Hanley gave me a big worn suitcase or large briefcase. It was a thank you for my services to The Fall.
Even in my dream I seem to remember thinking surely this is for Conway or Clayts!? :o
Anyway, inside, was an index system, which suggested master tapes or discs were inside. Only they weren't.
Hanley was simply giving me a souvenir of *his* travels to record companies with Fall demo's or something.
Mundane and bizarre at the same time.
I'm embarrassed to share this, as it might make me seem more anal about The Fall than I have already appeared.
However I thought I would post it before I forgot all about it, as you do gradually with dreams.
And since this it 'Fall related discussion' seemed more appropriate than discussing it with workmates or friends.
Does it mean anything?
Probably not.
But there you go...

I don't know if this means anything mate, but it is a great story, maybe it is just that you are addicted to this board and the music of the Fall as we all are. :D
Steve Local - March 15, 2005 10:52 PM (GMT)
I've had a few Fall dreams over the years. Mostly incredibly surreal (e.g. one that I remember clearly was Brix Smith processing round a church with a load of what looked like Roman Catholic cardinals - make of that what you will), unfailingly entertaining, and usually the kind of dream that you find yourself doing a double-take during - you know, when you hear your subconscious saying, mid-dream, "hang on, what the _hell_ is going on?" ^_^
Stranger - March 15, 2005 11:41 PM (GMT)
I'm glad somebody else owned up to having one.
I was already thinking if I got the p taken out of me massively, I was going to say I bet some of you longer term fans have had at least one Fall dream!
Actually given how impressed I was by Brix's, erm, appearance (in both senses of the word) at Phoenix all those years ago I'm surprised I didn't dream about her too  (I still don't mean *that* sort of dream at least not that lurid!).
:D
Granny On Bongos - March 16, 2005 12:11 AM (GMT)
I've been on stage with 'em, filling in on guitar and not having a clue what to do (which must have really happened to more than one musician), I've been at a rehearsal when they belted out the best Marquis Cha Cha imaginable, I've been talking to Mark over a pint and he's even been to my home, and worst of all, I've been listening to tracks off new LPs with the most fantastic music in them and I remember it for about 30 seconds on waking then it just evaporates.
I dread to think of the Fall dreams I have forgotten before I even wake up.
Funnily enough, I've been on stage with the Ruts, who I don't mind, and the Jam, who I detest. Always filling in on guitar me. Some sort of metaphor I reckon.
Martin - March 16, 2005 12:17 AM (GMT)
Daydreams are worse. For the best part of, I don't know, at least a year, a day has not passed without some sort of weird or otherwise Fall thought entering my head. Often, it's the certain feeling that I could do the definitive MES interview without even preparing for it...that he would spill the beans, cry a little, as in The Psychiatrist's Chair....an interview to fuck off all previous interviews...

Davis the drummer circa '80 more or less said as such...had to keep looking at Hanley and co to see where he had to fill in his parts...

that's an excellent fall dream.
about a week ago, i had a dream involving this message board
speaking of bowie, i once dreamt that i was smoking hashish in a bathroom with him. i sat on the edge of the tub and he was perched on the closed toilet. he wore a very nice suit.

I dreamt once the Fall were "reunited" I mean with the Hanleys, Scanlon, and Burns etc. Another time I dreamt I met Craig Scanlon in a post apocaliptic world at a punk house more like a hut. He was travelling the world meeting Fall fans just for the heck of it. Anyone else have the Fall enter their nocturnal subconscious yet? Pathetic I know, yet interesting... <_<
GoodKingHarry - August 11, 2005 01:50 PM (GMT)
I did meet MES in my sons bedroom once in a dream, which was slightly disturbing.
Previous to that he offered me the advice that I should get back into the Fall and the Pixies - which I have been doing most dilligently.
Are there any Jungians out there who might have a clue what He might represent? Unintergrated shadow I'm guessing.
Colonel Boggs Maroley - August 11, 2005 01:52 PM (GMT)
Three years back I had this dream: The Fall were performing at the Zodiac in Oxford, which for some reason was turned at 90 degrees to the Cowley Road and now overlooked a pleasant rose garden. The Fall featured two girl singers, one the comedienne Rebecca Front. The girls were reciting grocery shopping lists in a curious kind of back and forth dialogue, as Smith gazed wistfully out over the rose garden barking out words and phrases apparently at random, and the band rumbled away in the background. It was truly fantastic - unfortunately when I woke up I couldn't remember the tune.
