Title: Q & A thread
Description: Ask questions: get answers

Stephen - April 9, 2005 05:32 AM (GMT)
How about a thread for general questions? There's usually someone out there who knows the answer.

I'll start:

1. Where can I buy empty plastic CD cases (ideally for "very minute lolly")?

At my local branch of FNAC.

But don't you store CDs which aren't shop-bought in paper covers? This way, you have more CDs in less space...

My question is: Can anyone give me a good recipe using aubergines?

Stephen - April 9, 2005 06:00 AM (GMT)
3. Can anyone recommend a good book about Kung Fu films?

Yes. My wife made Aubergine curry last night. Very tasty. Will post later when she gets back home.

She Indian so this is the real deal. Not some Quazi lets try and curry something fannying about.

gorillabat - April 9, 2005 06:37 AM (GMT)
Who makes the Quazis?

Aubergines are called eggplants round here... best to chop & soak heavily in salt before use, removes the bitterness... or roast oveer an open flame untill utterly incinerated.
This mush is the foundation for babaganouj.
The small purple ones are great fried simply with chilly ginger & garlic. Serve with rice & soy sauce.

I find those shops known as "ten bob shops" good for junk like empty cd cases.

The One Euro shops here, mainly Chinese-run, serve the same purpose...great for stuff like batteries, sellotape, pens, coat hangers, etc...

Cutlery, coffee pots, underpants, tea-strainers, dodgy detergent...

Mr. Marshall - April 9, 2005 11:07 AM (GMT)
Fry sliced aubergines in olive oil. Layer in dish with a tomato sauce and fairly strong cheese. BAke for 20 mins.

Our cat, Fuckface, loves to lick the cold "coals" of our "flame effect" gas fire. What could the reason for this be?

He thinks he's the new pope and therefore completely insane.

She's 19 y.o. and is a bit senile- she walks along and just stops - as if she's forgotten what she set out to do - maybe she could be suitable material?

he likes it.

Maybe he's missing a mineral and belives that he can get it from coal & you're triciking him, like giving diet coke to a diabetic having a hypo attack!

What's the best way to get back to sleep when having a bout of insomnia induced by worry over some possible future problem or something that's bugging you (usually work-related in my case)?

Divvey - April 10, 2005 03:46 AM (GMT)
It's all about "sleep hygiene"
avoid caffeine late in the day
fix a time & routine to go to bed & keep it
have a light snack an hour or so beforehand
turn off the tv/pc at least 20 mins prior to going to bed (the show may be dull or there may be nowt happening here, but the super flast flicker of the screen is stimulating your brain)
Give yourself 20 mins. If you are still awake, get up. Your bed is meant to be a sanctuary, a refuge, a place you retire to. Laying there desperate for sleep makes it a torture rack. Do something light... look at a magazine for example. Don't turn on the TV, don't smoke.
Wait until you have settled down & give it another go.
Sleeping tablets are only good in the very short term ,best avoided really.
Chamomile tea & valerian get good recommendations.
Exercie helps.
Alcohol doesn't (the "sleep" of 8 pints is no sleep, it's a coma!)

as Friar Lawrence told us .."when unbrusied youth with unstuffed brain, doth couch his limbs, there golden sleep doth reign"
as mark Burgess from the Chameleons added "sleep, that blissful escape, when it comes, it's always too late"

Give me your best estimate of my time in my 10k race race this morning. Closest wins a training schedule for the month of May :P As a guide I'm not taking it too seriously and due to that I ran 12 miles yesterday which is very unusual for a pre-race day.

generalist - April 10, 2005 07:49 AM (GMT)
i haven't even got a clue as to how long that might take.... i know it would take me hours! i'm feeling very stiff in the joints this morning after working hard on the allotment yesterday... running 10k would actually be an impossibility right now! :ohdear:

now you didn't pay attention to the bit about not looking at the flickering screen.
Much better to print off a copy and keep by the bedside.

Harry Lime - April 10, 2005 09:22 AM (GMT)
one hour one minute

athlete not cured - April 10, 2005 02:06 PM (GMT)
Actual time - 40 mins 08 secs suprisingly close to what I may have expected had I taken it seriously. Though some 8 minutes adrift of my best and 5 minutes down on what I managed as recently as 3 years ago.

Martin - April 10, 2005 03:23 PM (GMT)
You owe me a training schedule.

When did the derogatory noun "munter" (to denote a person of supposedly less than gorgeous facial appeal) come into public usage? Is it as old as "minger", which I remember from the early 80s?

Martin - April 12, 2005 04:56 AM (GMT)
Can someone please give an explanation for fools of how to do multiple quotes? Thanks.
