Description: Album reviews
fallfandave - July 6, 2003 11:01 PM (GMT)
today was not too bad ....managed to drive all the way to market rasen race course n back without running over anybody....the fact we lost money on horses is irrelevant.....i didnt injure or kill anybody...so it was a very lucky day [considering the curse n all] i am quite pleased :)
Doctor Horse Strikeforce - June 26, 2003 11:45 AM (GMT)
I couldn't believe it when I first heard this album.
Totally unique, inimitable.
Conway - June 26, 2003 11:47 AM (GMT)
Was this just recently or 23 years ago?
Doctor Horse Strikeforce - June 26, 2003 11:56 AM (GMT)
I only bought it two years ago.
And Impression of J. Temperance is genuinely creepy.

ok this is my favorite cd so i must attempt to... review it but i am so tired.
putta block. is my favorite fall track of all time.
i just love it. the guitars. v nice, when they kick in. but, the line "the complete restructure of your pretensious life" simultaneously repels and... its still a great line. well, totally wired, we all know how great that is. NWRA similarly, v heavy distinctive beat, exellent of course. i have the version with how i wrote elastic man on it. what i love about some records, how you can hear the youth in their voices, and i think this is true on this track, with the lyrics as much as the voice, you can hear how young he is there and its nice. thats the kind of thing that makes me wonder about his upbringing, how he got so intelligent and so on and so forth. certainly not the kinds of things ive ever heard anyone else come out with.
english scheme, exellent, exellent track. "like your psychotic big brother who left home... for jobs in holland, munich,rome... he`s thick but he struck it rich- switch" this is part of his genius i think, where the style and form of his lyrics perfectly match his caustic voice. container drivers, totally batty and amazing.
this site, its slightly evil, i am meant to be doing something else and i have gotten sucked in. anyway. gramme friday i love this for its unusual rhythm.
right i bet you any money (but not literally) that even someone who hadnt heard the cd could do better than that there. rofl. ok time to sleep. (DO NOT READ MORE POSTS !! @ my brain.)

WHAT ARE YOU TALKIN ABOUT???????
Those aint on the album
How I Wrote Elastic Man and Totally Wired were singles prior to Grotesque and Putta Block is from Palace Of Swords Reversed.
Totally Wired WAS eventually included on the A Part Of America Therein album.......and all three of these were put together on palace 'o swords comp album..............Grotesque has always been 10 songs.
fallfandave - June 29, 2003 06:46 AM (GMT)
it is 14 songs on the cd i've got adam!.....but only 13 listed on the back........track 2. is not mentioned on the back ...but is on the inside.....the gr8 city hobgoblins .....sad they stuck these bonus tracks at the front.... shows total lack of guts.....it is like they r sayin the record wouldnt sell as good if they didnt put these sweetners at the front of the album.....stick em at the back [has conway sez] with a massive pause ....or even a talking bit by mes sayin .....'yerve bin good boys n girls n listened to the lp...so now here's yer bonus tracks!' :applaud:

Hey! Another great Fall album. Does what Dragnet threatens to do. Really memorable, acidic lyrics and short, sharp music. I find the sound fascinating - this must have been post-punk time, with new wave groups and well-made synthy records like Closer (and the affluent-sounding New Romantics were just emerging). Grotesque sounds like an anomaly, it carries on that 'sound of poverty' thing I mentioned with Dragnet. Everything on the record sounds spare and horribly skint, from the scratchy, rancid guitars to the rattling drums and toy keyboards. Can't beat those lyrics, either. C & C is such a wonderful rant. Much more definitive than Slates, Slags etc, not that that's a bad one.
01mimi - June 30, 2003 12:44 AM (GMT)
they are on the version i bought.
they arent on the original album ? ok, my best fall album changes to perverted by language.

i can understand Adams reaction tho. its like if someone released squirrel and a g-man (happy mondays) with the bonus tracks `freaky dancing` and `the egg`- if someone said to me, some 20 years later, o i love that track freaky dancing off that album, i would go absolutely ballistic. NO, NO, NO, those tracks are NOT part of the album. for me albums, the way you listen to them as a whole is important. i think it ruins the artists vision of the album a bit for someone to pop something else on there. but, of course, putta block is my favorite track and ive been listening to this as if it was a whole album. hmmmmmmmmm.
fallfandave - July 1, 2003 07:06 AM (GMT)
well they ruined the album for me by puttin 24 hr ppl on it n takin desmond off it...legal shit...it destroys everything
AdamG - July 1, 2003 07:15 AM (GMT)
OK, I'm back.....................just got home.
I've been sittin in hospital 'n doctor offices 'n gettin carried around like the cripple I now am.......I fucked up my ankle about as bad as can be done Sunday night.....I was alone at my shop and jumped outa the engine compartment of the racecar which was up on a lift.......I slipped while pushing off, and fell about six feet, crashing down full force on me right foot which folded under 'n dislocated, also tearin all the muscles 'n ligaments.......I laid there for a long time with Grotesque blastin on the stereo before I crawled to my cell phone and called my father, who took 45 minutes to get there, but the door was locked, he didn't have a key, I couldn't get to it, and I couln't hear him shoutin over the Fall so he fuckin broke down the door..............anyway, it's swollen up far to big (football size) to be in a cast or brace, so I get to look at it gettin bigger 'n bigger and changin diferent colors. :(
Obviosly i can no longer walk, but I did finaly get some crutches tall enough for me, so now I can hobble to the pisser.......unfortunately, I live alone in an old second floor apartment, so the steep narrow stairway is the only way in/out.......My cat Ed is not fetchin me the things I ask him for.......this really really sucks.
Not being able to walk is no joke.......I got laid off recently, and I've been doin temporary work loading/unloading trucks.......so much for that..........now, whose gonna hire a guy who can't walk? :banghead:
I have been a complete judgemental asshole lately and I appologise to the people who I've been a prick to.
I also apear to have been kicked off Fallnet, probably for the ignorant comment I posted here about who might have leaked CotC to soul***k.......serves me right.
Mimi, whatever songs are your favorites is cool with me :)
fallfandave - July 1, 2003 07:27 AM (GMT)
u have been kicked off fallnet as well as all the other stuff u have gone thru :(
01mimi - July 1, 2003 08:15 AM (GMT)
no way, that is too bad about your foot :(
dave u are right, 24 hr party ppl doesnt sit well in that album at all. for me it stands out too much 1. cos its more dance-sounding and 2. cos of that bastard film 24 hr party ppl. ive heard the track too much and it makes it stand out of the album. and now the new info 3. cos its not the original form of the album. i`ll have to get a copy of the original if thats possible, at some point (ie in 20 yrs).
have you seen that film ? its shit. well i didnt like it. i liked the first part about joy division, maybe because i dont know much about them. the actor who played ian curtis i thought was v cool and the song they did live was exellent. also like the fashion of that era. but the happy mondays bit was just horrible. its worth getting the dvd just to get a look at shaun ryder, the unbelieveable state of him. show this to kids in schools. "dont take drugs you lot cos this is what you will be like at the end of it" (if you happen to be addicted to crack and heroin and take 20 pills a day for 3 years, but they dont need to know that bit). in a way i think the fact they made some amazingly exellent music was almost an accident, but thats part of why i like it so much.
not listening to v much or buying any music at the mo so hopefully i will soon run out of things to say lol.
fallfandave - July 1, 2003 10:39 AM (GMT)
I thought 24 hr party ppl was funny.....but it aint a film i would watch over n over......i think they play up the humour too much.....there's no pathos to the film.....i like the stars who cameo in it....especially howard devoto in the toilets...and mark e was good too [if a little bit short]
i think happy mondays went down hill after the first album mimi...they just wrote worse n worse material n were relying more n more on production.....even live they became worse.....they turned into clown parodies of themselves pretty quickly..but in the early days i thought their stage presence was better than the fall's...which is sayin a lot really cos i think that is one strong point about the fall....i think i have desmond on mp3....if not i'll have to convert it from vinyl......i'll send it yer if yer want....if u have an email account that can receive the 3mb file... r u only on the dc ?
adam .....they can be pretty nasty things them dislocations...me daughter dislocated her elbow last year in rhodes.it took ages b4 she was right......they can be worse than breakin bones.....hope it gets better soon anyway....have they said how long it will take to get right?
u a judgemental prick? no more than everyone else!
cant believe they booted u out of fallnet....i dunno what u said adam, but i am sure it was meant in jest....r they such fascists on fallnet.i just delete all me msgs from them anyway.......only read em if i 'm realllyyyy bored.....cos most of them dont mention the fall....
Conway - July 1, 2003 11:12 AM (GMT)
No-one ever gets kicked out of fallnet.
Conway - July 1, 2003 11:12 AM (GMT)
... they usually leave of their own free will.
Conway - July 1, 2003 11:13 AM (GMT)
...due to musical differences
Conway - July 1, 2003 11:16 AM (GMT)
Seriously, I don't think anyone has ever been unsubbed from fallnet. Yahoogroups does however, from time to time, dump members off for no reason at all. Just resubscribe. It's happened to us all at some stage.
Conway - July 1, 2003 11:18 AM (GMT)
Can I just say I really like Pills N Thrills N Bellyaches. Some great tunes on that album.
fallfandave - July 1, 2003 11:25 AM (GMT)
i think g-man [10/10] , bummed [8/10], n bellyaches[8/10]....everyone should own!.....downhill from godlike is still excellent ;)

that makes me feel much much better.
I just assumed that, because as soon as Cole sent me an e-mail last week about my post on this board, I stopped getting fallnet messages....... I did think it was strange that that would happen for things said off-fallnet.......anyway, I'm gonna limit my vicious gossip to the actual Fall, and not Fall fans.
Nobody who looked at me ankle seemed to have any idea about recovery time.
The doctor said go to this x-ray place and they'll tell you what's up..........Then after many hours at the x-ray place, mainly waitin and fillin out forms, I asked em what's gonna happen to me, and they said "we don't know, we're not doctors, we just take pictures."
It was too late to make ANOTHER appointment and get driven back out to the doctor's, so I just went on to the orthopedic place to wait some more to get the corect crutches and ankle braces (which make it swell much bigger)...............they too said "we don't know, we're not ankle experts, we're just ortho supply." :banghead:
Fuckin wankers, western medicine don't know shit.......I should find a native american shaman to do a healing on it and suck the pain out.

thanks v much dave i`d v much like an mp3 of desmond. i can download it/ burn it when i get on the pc. my email should be on my profile. (i better check that tho b4 i log off). i feel pretty much the same about their albums. g-man being the best one. i like "bummed" alot, especially the track "performance". i also have the peel sessions from that time with a great version of "do it better", better than the album version i think. bummed sounds like it was produced underwater or something. v strange album. hallelujah i think was pretty awesome. i think they were really groundbreaking with that. i used to love and obsessively play "clap your hands". i had the live album (with the dolls head on the front).. amazingly i was AT that concert (leeds elland road), the version of clap your hands on there, even tho the quality of the recording is poor, is just unbelieveable. for me from the beginning, my favorite thing about them has been that lead guitar. there is something he does with that guitar which ive never heard anywhere else. its like a sort of high, twanging, lazy sort of sound, one note at a time. un-believ-able.
to see them when they first began, that must have been something. in the film i dont think they show enough respect to people really. it is a bit of a farce. they seem to have captured shaun ryder and bez`s mannerisms very well, but they still seem like actors. but it was great to see that scene where they are rehearsing in the garage. im almost really grateful to them for putting that in the film.
truls - July 3, 2003 08:47 PM (GMT)
Adam, I had a pretty similar ankle experience a few months back. Uncontrolled decent down basement stairs, folding ankle, passing out and all. I was pretty much a useless wreck for a week, then spent the next month or so hobbeling around with a plastic brace thing strapped on my ankle. It still kind of aches when I move it sideways. Bummer.
Anyway, Grotesque was my second Fall album some 20 odd yrs ago, the first being Totales Turns. Been a total FF ever since...

01mimi - July 4, 2003 11:49 PM (GMT)
hey no worries :)
what r u listening to at the moment ? im not meant to be buying any cds, but im dying to get that sean paul one "dutty rock".. i keep seeing it advertised on telly and the tunes are so catchy. i really want to get some techno as well. just dying to hear some more heavy beat type stuff. i played some 80s stuff yesterday like the smiths and depeche mode lol. i like er "what difference does it make" and "world in my eyes." like the violator stuff of depeche mode. then today like i played a bit of frank black, and a bit of light user syndrome. and also some funk. lol. funny u mentioned about light user being guitar based.. i always thought of it as more electronic ? he pep i think is awesome.. i as thinking as i played it right, if they didnt do this experimental stuff, maybe tracks like he pep wouldnt get made. nyway l8 got to go lol bye

| 'the curse of the fall forum' :ph43r: this is worse than them squirrels |
Squirrels have extended their rituals to include chasing humans through the park, approaching humans and tugging their shoelaces, and, in isolated but nevertheless alarming instances, launching themselves at human ankles from park benches.
They are capable of causing some nasty injuries if they wish.
So the "Curse Of The Fall Forum" is not completely unrelated to squirrels ^_^
Wretched Timesheeter - July 6, 2003 12:14 PM (GMT)
Curse of the Fall Forum? Eek! (*packs bags*)
Hmmm... I think the closest I came to being cursed was last night when I went out and inexplicably felt really crap before going home in a huff. Probably because everyone I know is getting married or moving in with their partners and I have had no such luck. It shouldn't get at me, but it does. Hmmmf. Nah, don't worry about me, I'll be fine.
Oh, and I just remembered that my best mate Dave bought a DVD of Bo Selecta yesterday, and it's the worst comedy programme ever. Really spoiled my day having to watch that.
