From General Forum thread : Help Needed.
I hope you guys don't mind us butting in to your message forum, but we at Strange Fruit are releasing The Fall's phoenix performances, but we don't seem to be able to find any live shots anywhere, so we are appealing to you lot.
If anyone can help, please email me at sfm@strange-fruit-music.co.uk
Ta very much.

Please do help them!
Phoenix '95 was filmed where Brix was looking very sexy indeed....unfortunately the video I've seen stops short of where she jumped on the drumstool (pervy memory remembers 'cleavage' and tight leather top! I wasn't the only one who noticed, grinning 'lads' around me noticed too) as it was raining by then. However I think more than one person was filming this gig, if I recall correctly.
Who was that man? Was it you!?
Help the cause here... :D
Film to photo is easier these days!
Stranger in a pervy mood. :ph43r:
PS on a more serious note, at Phoenix '96 they weren't announced on the program. My cousin and I were, erm, smoking in the car park at the time, bloody found out afterwards that I missed The Fall!!
:banghead: :banghead: :banghead: :banghead:
So a couple of photo's from that gig would go a tiny way to making up for what I missed, as well as a nice CD of the gig. :applaud:
Dktr Hohnholz-G - July 23, 2003 01:09 AM (GMT)
1. Pearl City
2. Behind The Counter
3. Free Range
4. Don’t Call Me Darling
5. Hilonist
6. Feeling Numb
7. Idiot Joy
8. Edinburgh Man
9. Glam Racket
10. He Pep!
11. Us ‘80s ‘90s
12. 15 Ways
13. Powder Keg
What were the performances like? Any good?
Strangerold - July 23, 2003 06:40 AM (GMT)
'95 was a good show, although as John Peel pointed out (he broadcast the FM edit of it) it sounded better on the radio.
As for '96 I only have the FM tape - the performance there is a little 'rawk'/OTT compared to other Fall performances that year. Still nice to have though.
They seem to have mixed up the tracks from the two years there.
What would be a better idea is to present both performances, complete (the '95 performance was probably about 45 minutes long, edited down to about 30 for radio) on a 2CD set, and put extra tracks on the end of each show of other tracks from the relevant years. Let's face it, we can tell from all these live CD's enough shows have been recorded...
As for photo's from these shows, have they asked the Melody Maker or NME to check their archives?
johnfm - October 3, 2003 06:30 PM (GMT)
Unless I missed it, no-one wrote about this one. I just got it in the mail, not bad for being in Milwaukee - and it was a perfectly miserable cold grey rainy day, now the evil sun is out, harumph.
Luckily this is an actual Strange Fruit BBC Music Production, so I don't have any issues with the sound quality. I haven't compared it to my other recordings of these shows ( and it is a bit misleading, if you don't look at the back of the booklet you might think it is all one show ), but I am guessing this is about as good as it gets.
Tracks are:
July 15th, 1995:
1. Pearl City
2. Behind The Counter
3. Free range
4. Don't Call Me Darling
5. Chilinist
6. Feeling Numb
7. Idiot Joy Showland
8. Edinburgh Man
9. Glam Racket
July 21, 1996:
10. He Pep!
11. US 80's-90's
12. 15 Ways
13. Powder Keg
I see from notes I kept that I have what says to be a recording of the 1996 set that also includes both The Chisellers and Behind The Counter. Can anyone confirm/deny the set lists for these shows? I feel a bit cheated if they were suppossed to be there, but I might guess they didn't want to double up on tracks for the cd, but the completist in me grumbles.

Still can't find Phoenix CD anywhere.
Was lucky enough to see the 96 show and wouldn't mind a memento, plus my tape of 95 show is getting old (crows feet ingrained upon my face etc).
Nice to see it does exist.
Idiot Joy Show purports to have other tracks from Phoenix 96 show, but as its got Mike Bennetts name attached to it, I'd be inclined to be at least a little dubious.

I just played "He Pep!" from the new Phoenix Festival cd, and compared that to the "Hey Pep!" from the Idiot Joy Showland cd ( which has it at the wrong track number, of course, grrrr )
They are certainly not from the same set of tapes. I was trying to figure out if it was the same performance, which was a bit challenging, but I found that on the new Phoenix Festival cd Mark gives a very audible urrrgh noise before the first word of "He Pep", and on Idiot Joy Showland that grunting is absent. The IJS one also has an extended intro, but I wasn't sure if perhaps the PF cd was edited down a bit.
On IJS, you can hear the He Pep's really clear, along with Mark's vocals, but it has a tinny quality. I wonder if this was from a soundboard recording, and I also wonder what show it is really from. I don't know if the other tracks on IJS which are stated to be from Phoenix 1996 are really those at all.
I am hoping someone with actual tapes of these sets can clear it up. Maybe the grunting before "He Pep" can aid in figuring out what is what. I tend to think the BBC Archive people probably got it right, as opposed to whoever slapped together IJS.

I know I should have written this in a thread about "Idiot Joy Show", but I bought "Idiot Joy Show" and don't think it's all that good. It hasn't been a long time since I heard the "Time Enough at Last" box, and liked those live recordings better. It's probably that I'm more familiar with the songs now, and find "The Chiselers/Chilinist/Chinilism", "Cheetham Hill", "Glam Racket" (Brix version), etc. to hold up less and less the more I hear them. I was looking forward to a live version of "Stay Away", which I liked a lot on the "Light User Syndrome" album, but it's not a good performance here at all. "The Coliseum" is a decent instrumental live version, there's a great "U.S. 80's & 90's", and it's good to hear "Powder Keg" live and also a version of "Hey Pep!" without the keyboard so loud, but it's certainly not an album I'll listen to that much. I think I should have waited for the Phoenix Festival CD, because now I'm not even that excited about hearing more live recordings from the '95-'96 period. I know it's the last with Craig Scanlon, but still, I don't really want to hear the middle part of "The Chiselers" again too soon.

I would agree with that, considering the laughably hideous quality of previous releases associated with Mr Bennett.

The 1996 setlist, or the songs broadcast, was as follows:
He Pep
US 80s-90s
Chiselers
15 Ways
Pearl City
Powder Keg
Behind The Counter
So the 3 duplicated tracks were left off the new CD.

I've just checked the gig recordings I have, John, & the version of He Pep on Idiot Joy Show is from the Roskilde festival. So the sleeve references it to the wrong show - quelle surprise!

Thanks for clearing that up. This is probably beating a dead horse, but are the other supposed Phoenix 1996 tracks on Idiot Joy Showland (supposedly "Pearl City" and "Chilinism") actually from Phoenix 1996?

just got my hands on a copy of live at phoenix. nice sleevenotes from peel, yet again. excellent performances, well edited etc. love the neu-like chilinist. doesn't really go anywhere but, to paraphrase the users's guide, it has a good time regardless.
god, if only all fall live albums could be this good.

Right on about S. Bending's site - it's amazing. I missed a lot of the earlier stuff, but maybe some of it'll come back around during a slow time or something. I have a dialup connection, and it takes me forever, but God damn, is it ever worth it.
Petula Macabre - October 21, 2003 11:44 AM (GMT)
abso-bloody-lutely mate, as irritating middle class media bores have a tendency to say.
but yeah, its quality stuff. hope bending puts some more live stuff up soon, though. i do have a fondness for lee and herring, but it'd be nice to have some good, scabby live-to-air fallness to get us teeth into.
Petula Macabre - October 21, 2003 11:49 AM (GMT)
oh, it looks like dead beat descendant's up on the bending's site now.
did i dream that whole lee and herring thing?

i still like trevor n simon...... the other night they was on telly.....i love them two
i think richard is ok ......but stu lee i find too edgy [is he a writer really?] i dunno too much about em

I know nothing about the Phoenix Festival, not even where it is. But this BBC-sanctioned live document is pretty interesting, because it gives decent-sounding quality performances of the long-time band of many of my CC and LUS favorites, as well as the best rendition of Glam Racket/Star that I've heard yet. At times it seems a bit lazy -- you can tell this era of the band was probably a low point for the band -- but some of the performances, esp. Brix's contributions, are fiery.
Not one for the top of the live heap, but worthwhile nonetheless.
Country Folk - September 4, 2004 02:57 PM (GMT)
Phoenix was a festival which sprang up in the mid 90's when there seemed to be a festival happening each week of the summer. Although the line-ups tended to be decent there wasn't anything unique about it, and it got lost under the multitude of Glastos, Readings, V, T in the Parks etc and was the first to fold (I think it finished in either 1998 or 1999), due to low ticket sales. Vince Power of the Mean Fiddler was behind it, but that shouldn't come as a surprise since he's behind pretty much every non-dance UK festival. New Order were supposed to be headlining the final cancelled show, but were then moved to second billing on some other fest (think it was Reading). Probably beneath some pure pish like Kula Shaker or one of those innovative Britpop bands which did their best to kill off any alternative leanings in alternative music...
Avril Lavigne's 'difficult teen' posing always makes me laugh, until I see the conservative posers gothing it up in the so-called 'credible' corner...
gappy tooth - September 6, 2004 09:45 AM (GMT)
The BBC broadcast the full recordings of both gigs at the time..I'm not sure why they didn't release complete sets as a dbl CD, I'm sure it would have sold better (might have bought one myself, for a start, to repalce the old C90s)
chrisgoodhead - September 6, 2004 09:50 AM (GMT)
A small amount was televised too. I'm sure I remember a really depressed looking Smith, a drizzly British early afternoon and a tinny version of 15 Ways really brightening up my day in front of the telly.
leeroy - September 15, 2004 06:46 PM (GMT)
I saw that on t.v too. Smith tried kicking one of the camera men and i think Smith also had a blood stained white shirt on.

nor cheetham hill.
Had to check it to see, thinking the joke there was in the same vein - rolls on the keyboards, off-the-wall behaviour - but it's colder, cleaner, compared to the warm fuzz of phoenix :ohdear:
Is the difference brix then?
