Description: Original vs Real new version
Gaz - January 1, 2005 02:45 PM (GMT)
Opinions please....
Ive gone for a mix of both, prefering some version off the original but rating TRNFLP more as a whole.
Gaz - January 1, 2005 07:52 PM (GMT)
No comments on this?
Be nice to know how many of you actuley have the COTC version.....
The Eccles Connection - January 1, 2005 08:02 PM (GMT)
Exactly
I haven't got it on the grounds that MES doesnt want me (or any of us) to have it
So as I haven't got it...I can't compare it....!
Those who comment of course will have it and then Mister Smith will be able to track you down and boil your intestines in fetid kangaroo spit....

Didn't even know there are two versions (apart from US/UK). Jeez and I call myself a fall fan
:ohdear: You've reminded me to get it back since I've borrowed it to someone! Its annoying when things dont get returned!
What are the differences anyway?
Vvillager - January 1, 2005 08:19 PM (GMT)
Is it worth buying the US version of this, as well as the UK version? The impression that I get is that the US version is more like COTC was originally. Is it worth shelling out more cash to have a slightly different album?
I can't answer the poll as I've only heard the UK version.
Steve Local - January 2, 2005 01:17 AM (GMT)
Mix of both, but only because the original version of The Past is a blistering Fall-by-numbers thrash with guitars that are sadly missed on the RNFLP version... for everything else I probably prefer the official release.
Green - January 2, 2005 02:39 AM (GMT)
Haven't voted in this yet till I buy the first UK, finally saw it in a store for just a shade under 30 dollars; might wait till tax time rolls around before I purchase that.

I haven't listened to the old bootleg version since the new one came out, but for me RNFLP was a vast improvement on every song save The Past and Recovery Kit. But the US version has an ace Recovery Kit, so no harm done really. The new version of THe Past grew on me, The Fall being influenced by a band they influenced (It sounds very Clinic-like to me)
In 40 years when this album is re-mastered you can only imagine the deluxe bonus stuff they'll have for it. It could fill a box set. 3 versions of the album, 4 peel tracks, 3 singles/eps. Whew.
Harry Lime - January 2, 2005 01:26 PM (GMT)
I have searched several of those wicked illegal file-sharing things for months and have never been able to find the original version.
Gaz - January 2, 2005 03:37 PM (GMT)
Just to sort this:
COTC track listing
1 Theme From Sparta FC
2 Protein Protection
3 Mountain Energei
4 Contraflow
5 Green Eyed Loco Man
6 Last Commands
7 Boxoctosis
8 Ho(e)uston
9 The Past
10 Recovery kit
11 Mike's Love Xexagon
12 Susan vs Youthclub
The difference's are profound, from arangement to lyrics through to production.
And it's very easy to get hold of too, someone on this very site Pm'd me out of the blue and asked me if i wanted it! ^_^
fallchase - January 2, 2005 07:12 PM (GMT)
i just feel the fall rule
kiespijn - January 3, 2005 11:51 AM (GMT)
not really noticed on the real new lp, before getting brainwashed by INTERIM:
the "gas boiler" bit in 'green-eyed loco man' - is there also something about "guarantee"?
..mm - have to have a look at the lyrics parade.
the tolling bell in 'boxoctosis' - makes me think of a tug, but perhaps it's from the ringside?
the past#2 - singling this track out, I was in it's spell yesterday..
..but you say the original version is better?!
Some other stuff I can't remember..
fallchase - January 3, 2005 03:56 PM (GMT)
both great albums cant argue with that
epidemic27 - February 6, 2009 08:13 AM (GMT)
Didn't know the versions on the US release were different.
That's winging its way to me now. May have to track down the UK version too if they're different in more ways than cover alone.
ditto the bootleg.
twinz2z - February 6, 2009 12:02 PM (GMT)
I think theres a link to the bootleg on the download-now thread, in buy/sell/exchange.
epidemic27 - February 6, 2009 12:12 PM (GMT)
Yes, I discovered that about 5 mins after posting! Thanks.
I've now bought the UK official release digitally. Will get the CD if I find it for a not too silly price.
Haven't had a chance to listen to the bootleg yet, is that in iTunes format rather than mp3, from what it looks like?
twinz2z - February 6, 2009 12:21 PM (GMT)

I mostly like the original COTC, but the version of Spart FC on it is a bit weak. I voted for a mix.
hobgoblin - February 6, 2009 10:55 PM (GMT)
COTC blows TRNF album out of the water......... makes it sound like a demo....... one day it shall see the light of day - lets hope it's soon.............
Exopsychicton - February 7, 2009 02:45 AM (GMT)
Final version is much better to these ears, though the 'original' has some real legs to it, specifically The Past, and Contraflow. A mix I suppose, though the The Past 2 would also have to be there....
Mere Pseud. - February 7, 2009 10:50 AM (GMT)
My perfect version would definitely be a mix.
I prefer the official Sparta FC and Loco Man versions while I tend to like COTC's Xyralothep and especially Xexagon (later released on the red box) more.
Apparently the remix was due to an internet leak. Very glad about it in this case because we now have two fantastic alternatives.
rainmaster - February 7, 2009 10:59 AM (GMT)
I like a mix of the two as well, but disagree regarding Sparta - it's a weak rendition (IMHO) and MES seemed to struggle getting the lyrics across. The RNFLP version seems more coherant.
Isn't the version of Xyralothep the same on both issues, they certainly sound so.
Xexagon and The Past are both superior on the original.
I'm glad too that there are two versions - I might just do a mix of them both, collecting the best versions from each. The remix / re-record was necessary, I feel, though the new version was a little too over-produced in the end.
twinz2z - February 7, 2009 11:07 AM (GMT)
Iodeo, the original Loco-man has the riff at the beginning played with 100 times more character than the later version.
Then again T R New Fall had Janet Jonny and James. (best track since, ages)
rainmaster - February 7, 2009 11:14 AM (GMT)
Still don't think you can beat the Peel Seeion version of 'Loco Man'.
Mr. Marshall - February 7, 2009 11:54 AM (GMT)
| QUOTE (rainmaster @ Feb 7 2009, 10:59 PM) |
Xexagon and The Past are both superior on the original.

The Past really is wild, isn't it?
rainmaster - February 7, 2009 11:58 AM (GMT)
Playing the original COTC now just to see if Xyralothep is any different. Protien Protection sounds remarkably similar to TFNFLP version too.
Will report back when it's finished. :)
rainmaster - February 7, 2009 12:44 PM (GMT)
Just played the original COTC again.
I'm still not convinced there is any difference in the original Xyralothep to the new version. Likewise, Protien Protection, and Ho(e)uston sounds very similar, minus the Loop 41 intro.
My main problem with the original however is the vocals on some tracks. MES seemed to struggle with his voice on numerous occasions, especially on Sparta and Loco Man. I seem to remember Ben Pritchard mentioning that MES had problems laying down the vocals when it was recorded. There also seems to be too much reliance on backing vocals particularly on Loco Man and Boxoctosis.
Love the spooky keyboards on Mountain and Xexagon, btw, and the inclusion of Janet, Johnny & James in favour of Susan on the new version was a good move. :)
elvischomsky - February 8, 2009 10:37 AM (GMT)
The original is better by several miles.
I know this.
worthless recluse - February 8, 2009 02:28 PM (GMT)
RNFLP is was their best in years - COTC would've been a crushing disappointment for me had that version been released.
FAT BLOB - February 15, 2010 06:05 AM (GMT)
wow. I'm listening to the original COtC mix right now. I have never been much of a fan of RNFLP but these mixes and arrangements really make the songs shine- it has more of an Unutterable experimental feel to it rather than the blandish rah-rah anthems of RNFLP
Mere Pseud. - February 15, 2010 09:44 PM (GMT)
Definitely the third option for me.
My perfect album would be a 60/40 combination in favour of TRNFLP. Extremely glad both versions are accessible, though.
Conway was absolutely right by including the original version of Mike's Love Xexagon on the red box. The most significant quality distinction among the individual songs IMO.
imaglasgowmanmyself - February 28, 2010 01:35 PM (GMT)
a mix but overall the original
