Title: Cover versions
Description: 1st poll
Conway - September 5, 2003 10:10 AM (GMT)
Since no-one else set up the poll, here it is. Not sure which one I'm going for though
splart_plantation - September 5, 2003 10:13 AM (GMT)
My personal opinion is that there's no such thing. Original songs including MES's state of mind at the time is the whole point of a Fall song, surely?
Feel free to disagree.
One thing I can confirm is that, faced with the list of cover versions, none of them are *really* classic Fall tracks, are they?

Although "I'm A Mummy" is quite good...
01mimi - September 5, 2003 10:32 AM (GMT)
they've done "strychnine" ? ive got a version of that by the sonics.
mantpl - September 5, 2003 10:36 AM (GMT)
My votes go to I'm A Mummy & I'm Not Satisfied ("..cos I'm stuck in the house all day and never get to ...")
I've never heard the Zappa version of 'I'm Not Satisfied' but I think The Fall version is ace.
Conway - September 5, 2003 10:37 AM (GMT)
Mimi, you haven't read my covers webpage then, have you, you naughty naughty girl! :P
You didn't know that already anyway?
fallfandave - September 5, 2003 10:40 AM (GMT)
I went for foldin money....cos i think it is very good rollin dany i like too...the fall can do these type of numbers in their sleep...it is their home ground...

Somethimes that can be a good thing B)
01mimi - September 5, 2003 11:11 AM (GMT)
ive read it now :D
very interesting..... alot of them i didnt know were covers.
four foot vauxhall carlton - September 5, 2003 11:17 AM (GMT)
That was such a difficult choice.
Kimble just edged out Im Going To Spain due to exciting broken glass effects and (though I hate the word) it's a very [Bproficient] recording from (cue Smashy Nicey) for me the definitive Fall line-up
The only cover of there's I'm not a fan of is Im Not Satisfied
fallfandave - September 5, 2003 11:52 AM (GMT)
foldin money is the popular choice....3 votes now!
a mystery voter along with meself n soul bro conway :)
btw conway did u get 'the light pours out of me'?...or r u still being flooded with viruses.
wayneb - September 5, 2003 12:16 PM (GMT)
well, lost in music gets my vote (with f'oldin money n why are people grudgeful probably joint second)
sdOK - September 5, 2003 12:33 PM (GMT)
I think the Falls covers are great. African Man and Boojwahwah town the music I had never heard when we did them. Mark did play a blast of white noise and said play that to me which became african man. I only found out later that it was iggy pop.
And beyond the 2 above there are quite a few covers i think are far superior to the originals.
Im going for african man anyway. I always thought it was great until it was massacred in the studio. My stupidest riff. But it was meant to be polyrythmic which it still retains on the album version i think.
mantpl - September 5, 2003 01:00 PM (GMT)
sorry sdOK, but African Man is possibly the worst Fall track ever!

[music idiot]What does polyrythmic mean? More than 1 rhythm?[/music idiot]
four foot vauxhall carlton - September 5, 2003 02:02 PM (GMT)
I dont know the difference between chords and keys me.
Or syncopation whats that?
I know a good tune when I hear one though.
Todays random good tune - "Seventeen" by Ladytron.....
mantpl - September 5, 2003 03:09 PM (GMT)
a girl here in the office loves Ladytron, and is always dying her hair.
It's kinda an offish blue at the moment. I preferred it when it was red.
And she always wears black like Ladytron
Wretched Timesheeter - September 5, 2003 04:37 PM (GMT)
Ladytron are this : the goodness.
But anyway. My favourite Fall cover has to be I'm A Mummy. It was the third or fourth Fall song I ever heard and I just pissed myself laughing when I heard it. The timing is brill.

Thank you for reminding me of a Replacements song.
I hate music
It's got too many notes!
DustOff - September 5, 2003 10:18 PM (GMT)
I picked "I'm A Mummy" but "Just Waiting" comes in a close second..
Bazooka Joe - September 6, 2003 03:30 AM (GMT)
2 meny good choices to choose frum there frenz. me went with black monk theme just cuz it's got unbelievable bite to it. specially cranked out to a fooking 10 spot on the metre. f-folding iz a great track too. n how can you not like jus' waitin' by the legendary hank dubya???? n i gots to say that in order to truly "appreciate" the going to spain cover u gots to check out the original version cuz it's fooking horrendous rubbish. how mes eva took n did what he did with it is a testament to his brilliance. if you ain't heard it u won't believe it.
stuart - September 6, 2003 02:57 PM (GMT)
Rollin' Dany for me, played it at my wedding, always makes me smile, much like I'm a Mummy which was a close secoend.
richard - September 7, 2003 11:54 AM (GMT)
Dany for moi, too. It's my favourite cover art, love the 12" detail of Smiffy the leather jacket clad Gene Vincentesque rocker...
Was Mark's Dad a rockabilly?
Dktr Hohnholz-G - September 7, 2003 04:59 PM (GMT)
fallfandave - September 7, 2003 11:18 PM (GMT)
ah,,,, the next one.... -_- it will probably be called black monk theme 3....but turn out to be an obscure of a rare 'gene vincent cover' originally performed by the very cult famous 'unknown obscurities' who made their track called 'these teeth were made for talkin' an absolute classic..... :applaud: ....n i will buy it :)
Dktr Hohnholz-G - September 8, 2003 01:15 AM (GMT)
As long as fallfandave mixes it!
Dktr Hohnholz-G - September 9, 2003 02:13 AM (GMT)
And that MES delays its release for 3 1/2 years.

WHY'S THAT ? i dunno how to mix the fall
they can do it themselves.... :P
i have enough to do
Dktr Hohnholz-G - September 9, 2003 12:21 PM (GMT)
Mixing? That never stopped the mighty Fall.
frenzbob - September 9, 2003 08:01 PM (GMT)
Lost in music for me but needed more votes - ties with Kimble/strychnine/this perfect day/f-oldin money and I'm a mummy! (oh yeah and........)
Avalon - September 24, 2003 12:31 AM (GMT)
The sonics!!! this song is a psycho theme only the fall can do justice. I read Peel asked for this cover. (I am writing from the Pacific NW, hometown boys you know). Underground rock at it's best. Poetic? Yes!
This perfect day was great when the change comes in with backup vocals. Epiphany, and mark E. right their with you!
Conway - November 19, 2004 08:41 AM (GMT)
Time we brought this one back for another round. :)
Stephen - November 19, 2004 08:48 AM (GMT)
Had no idea this had been polled before...

Conway - November 19, 2004 09:07 AM (GMT)
But Stephen, isn't your index system supposed to ensure this repetition doesn't happen? Don't say you forgot to check before starting that other poll??? ^_^
Stephen - November 19, 2004 09:34 AM (GMT)
In my defence:
– Your poll was from before I visited the board, so I had no awareness of it
– Being from early days, it was actually filed in 'general' even after polls split off to its own section, thus did not come up when I trawled 'polls' for links.
Won't happen again!
Conway - November 19, 2004 09:42 AM (GMT)
Alright, I'll let you off this time, but it better not happen again!
Or I'll send Brix around to give you a good spanking.
Glam Rick - November 19, 2004 11:03 AM (GMT)
this is the best poll i've seen...
i voted "i'm a mummy" because when i got levitate i would have never considered it to be a cover... it was just an odd/good song... after listening to the original version, i KNOW they made the song their own in a very good way.
