Title: Peel Session #24
Description: Reviews
gappy tooth - August 13, 2004 10:57 AM (GMT)
There has been some discussion on this already, but I thought I'd start a nice neat new thread here to avoid confusion. Here's my response:
Clasp Hands - On 1st listen, this doesn't grab me by the throat. It's perfectly good, it just left me a little  ..it even sounded a touch (whisper it) Beggars Brix to me!
Then that chord sequence came in! Odd thing is, I couldn't place it! 1st I thought they were referencing one of their old songs, then I thought it was somebody elses. A couple of bars later I realised it was both! I'm not sure what I think about this yet - my instinct is to think it's lazy, but then why should I mind them using the same chords twice, but let them off simply rerecording an old song (see below)?
No logic to it, really. I think that this track will have to be heard again to judge properly (don't forget, I was pretty tired, & the radio was on relatively low so as not to disturb the wife!).
Oddly, when it was announced I thought it was called "Glass Pans"! That is what was originally written on my C90 box! Do you remember those 80s transparent pyrex pots you could get, called "Vision"? That's what I thought it was about.
They were great for making popcorn in. "You can put the dinner on, I'll be home in 20 minutes" (or was thata different ad? Oh well).

I enjoyed the session it's the first one I've listened to live for a number of years, I enjoyed the middle two (the 2 new ones, not sure about "Clasp Hands") :applaud:
(Bloody hell we posted very closely-within 7 minutes of each other) :D

Blindness:
Funny, when Peel played this at the wrong time* I thought "Now, that sounds like a good Fall song"!
It's good this, sounds great. ON 1st listen I'm not convinced that it's a solid gold composition, but I adore the performance. Very nice (best of the sess, probably).
* Ah, I've missed old clumsy Peel. I wish they hadn't moved him to 11.00. I hardly ever hear it anymore. I should make an effort, I guess, otherwise noone will listen & he'll be cancelled & I'll get upset & it'll be like "One Man & His Dog" all over again. Except with more gabba.

What About Us?
Nice little tune. Strange that, over the last 10 years, many of The Fall's songs owe more to Suzi Quattro & Gary Glitter than the Pistols or Beefheart.
Any idea why the protagonist is a rabbit??
Not so sure about the backing vox - I seem to have been a bit fed up with these in recent times: shut yer goddamned box!
R. Totale - August 13, 2004 11:40 AM (GMT)
I wasn't sure at the beginning of Clasp Hands, then the tempo shifted.. and the whole session was pure gold from then on. I don't usually like Wrong Place Right Time, but the way it sequenced into Grass was spinetingling..
gappy tooth - August 13, 2004 11:42 AM (GMT)
Wrong Grass:
I love Wrong Place, so it was a pleasure to hear it again. Didn't like it quite so much as the orig (less punchy) but maybe that's just because I'm not used to it. Nice work.
I like the segue, because they don't just fade into each other, you can hear a ghost of Wrong for ages underneath Grass Grow. To be honest, I wasn't expecting to think much of Grass Grow, but it really works, & they play it superbly. Best "straight" cover I can think of, in fact!!
So overall, very happy with the result. I preferred Peel 23, but mayeb this was only because I didn't know what to expect, whereas last night I had great faith in them. Peel was v happy (come on, tho, John, it wasn't the best sess ever - dig out your old archives, boy!) & was v polite in thanking them: he must have forgiven MES his telephonic outburst!
Anyone have anything to add?
Roll on the quarter century :applaud:
Pontypoolie - August 13, 2004 11:54 AM (GMT)
without getting too indepth songwise - I loved it
I've listened to it on the way to work and around town at lunch and I'm fkn flying
job well done - cheers

If they were looking for a segue for Grass it would have gone very neatly into Hilary... -_-

What are the chances this session will be included on the (hopefully) upcoming Peel session box set ?
fallchase - August 13, 2004 02:47 PM (GMT)
from what i have heard everything sounds great.

I don't think anyone's going to be disappointed with this Chase. Peelie might have been exaggerating when he said it was their best Peel session, but it could be in my top 5. Real shiver-down-the-spine stuff..
usrlocal - August 13, 2004 03:16 PM (GMT)
The songs are rock solid, and I do so enjoy the fact that MES is getting back into his old vocal form.
I think I'll have to offset the Big Chief's rating by giving the session a 10.5/10.

BLINDNESS
And [our humans/demons]
Cavalry of Calvary

And not a drop of water
Or paper
Or paper
J.W. said -
walking bass, walking bassDon't forget, don't forget
He expected Aristotle Onasis

But instead he got Mr James Fennings from Prestwick [in Cumbria]
Do you..reflect this evil?
Thought of cavalry, Calvary
His first appearance was on
Moscow road
But poster came at first
At first I thought it was just a poster
I was talking to
Jayne Seymour [James? Seymour]
Eyes wide open

The neck was slightly dislocated
But then I walked up the street
There was a repellent plastic
Said poster with a picture
Do you work?
I was on one leg
At the top of the street
There was a poster
A plastic front
From Moscow Road it came
From Deansgate it came
From Narnack Records it came

I was on my way
I had to be on by 9.30
I said -
walking bassPaper times 2
Paper times 2
Paper everywhere and not a drop of water to be seen
I said
Eyes by the ocean
[...]
I am losing my [feet]
I am losing my [feet]

Everywhere I look I see a blind man
I see a blind man
Everywhere I look
I see a...

I can't get my eyes checked
My blues eyes can't get checked
I'm only one leg
I said to poster, "When's the curfew over?
I said, "Blind man, have mercy on me."
I said, "Blind man, have mercy on me."
Blind man have mercy on me
Oh Great One I am a mere receptacle
The egg tester for your sandlewood and over asserted roots

In dark green
Blind man have mercy on me
I got a
metal leg - truth
Flat is the evil of Calvary and cavalry

:) very nice :had it on very loud and enjoyed the clarity after distortions of live performance ..that said, 'What About Us' seemed a bit light, especially compared to the molton version played in stourbridge

i think the peel session with contraflow and sparta fc was the best peel session.

who is this guy, is he a big wig?
Antler Heads+Tings - August 13, 2004 11:21 PM (GMT)
He may need a big wig these days, but he is in fact a funny stand up/music based comic.
Dry, droll and unfunny making him very funny.
Last time i saw him was supporting The Fall at London Forum (Light User Tour?), his act was himself and a hand held tape deck put through the PA.
Some folks thought it would be a "larf" to throw bottles at him- to which he responded along the lines of:
"I can see some of you think you'd like to throw bottles at me, it doesn't bother me in fact to prove it i'll stay still for this next number so you can have a clear shot- it just makes a mess on the stage for when the main act comes on- he may feel like having a little dance and could hurt himself."
He then did "She Loves You (And you know that can't be bad)"- fared better than WORLD OF LEATHER ot the BRIXTON FRIDGE (Middle Class Revolt era) who were bottled off like i've never seen. Owch!

Im so bloody glad Ive dipped back into this forum (after a good few years absence).
Ted Chippington - certainly a Midlands comedy great from the early 80s. Think he is from Stoke area, certainly played Stafford college & polly a lot during this period & had a strong following.. Im pretty sure he supported the Fall at one occasion at Stafford college!
Where there were angry comedians of the time Ted just told innocent anecdotes & a few jokes that werent funny - he did a few songs that he talked his way through - his catch phrase was "I was walking down the road the other day ".. he would then follow it with something like .."and this bloke pulled up in his car & said excuse me mate Im in a bit of a dilemma".. "nice motor those Dilemas, thinking of getting one meself"! And that was basically it. Another one - "just got back from Nam yesterday ...Birmingnam" - it was his accent & delivery that made it, & for some reason he dressed as a Teddy boy!
I think any Fall fan who has a big grin on their face during a gig would probably have appreciated Ted as well.
Oh yes - IMHO best Peel session since early 83 & Smile
:D

Excellent work ‘Trashcan…love the graphics…although I think ‘Rock and Bass’ may actually be ‘Walking Bass’ (which is the kind of bass line employed in many/most early rock and roll records – you’d recognise it if you heard it…)
I just absolutely love this song…have (as I guess most of you have) burnt this session to CD, and just keep playing ‘Blindness’ over and over again at absolutely murderous volume through the headphones (seen the Fall live twice with Stephen Trafford on bass but I had no idea he’d be this good on recorded work…)
Look forward to your interpretation of ‘What About Us’ – which as others have said, although utterly wonderful in the Peel session, is not quite as visceral as I remember it played live at Stourbridge…

But also, the lyric sung in York was of a rabbit from cologne
