Title: Favourite band/artist when you were 14?
Description: who rocked your world as a teenager?
Sven Hassel Schmuck - November 21, 2009 11:54 PM (GMT)
I was a massive fan of Madness/The Specials, but by my 15th birthday, I had begun an obsession with Marc Bolan which would last about 2 years.
The Fall were some way in the future..I wasn't ready for them yet.
flickeringlexicon - November 22, 2009 12:10 AM (GMT)
The Soft Machine, although they were already very old news at the time. Then I guess it would be Sioux, the B-52's, Devo, etc... I didn't discover the wonder that is The Specials til they were long gone.

Why The Soft Machine? I mean, I love them now but as a kid I would have been baffled :D

Thelonious Monk - then and now
as far as rock is concerned: Buddy Holly and Bo Diddley. Elvis was already irrelevant to me by then. And, early doowop, then and now.
There's no telling how great Buddy Holly was and would have become, imo

When I was 14 my favourite band was the Fall.

Ver Clash.
The Fall still weren't on my radar, then...

1978. School trip to London. We had the coach driver play Stranglers cassettes on the tape player. Loved it. :)
That and ABBA. ;)

It's strange. A friend bought a two-fer repackaging of The Soft Machines' first two albums cos he liked the song titles and the weird cover art, neither of us had heard the name before. Then we played it and I fell in love with it... I used to play 'Hope For Happiness' every morning. I liked the funny lyrics and the lack of guitars, I spose. I liked fooling my friends who insisted Ratlidge's solos had to be a guitar, too  I was already listening to other 60's music like The Doors at that point, so in a way, a freaky keyboard band was the logical progression. The radio of the late 70's, in the states, was so crap as to drive one deep into the past, that's for sure. B)
And I still love The Softs!
duckpin236 - November 22, 2009 12:40 AM (GMT)
The Doors get little respect here but the song writing was sophisticated and some of the vocal themes were not common in rock. I was never a huge fan but their Stange Days album was really good, imo
FAT BLOB - November 22, 2009 12:43 AM (GMT)
I was just emerging from metal (Slayer, Celtic Frost, Overkill, Anthrax) and discovering punk. My friends and I would steal cassettes from a record store...Sex Pistols, Black Flag, Dead Kennedys, DRI. I still listen to all of these bands and enjoy them very much. I had written off Rollins-era Black Flag but have come around for serious reevaluation lately.
DRI, well...they only had a couple good records in them.

Agreed, but those first two: wow. The fact that their third album was called 'Crossover' was a rather large warning sign...

!972.
The Seventies didn't seem to start until a couple of years later.
My faves at 14 - The Move, Stevie Wonder, Beatles, Bowie, 10cc, Sweet.
That's probably about it in the same kind of order.

Beatles, Stones, Elton John, Stevie Wonder

Must have been Steely Dan. Around that time I just began to grow a bit tired of Prog and Hard Rock. As I mentioned recently on another thread this is the only act to whom I always remained faithful since the mid 70s contrary to other bands whose appeal waned considerably between the late 70s and late 80s/early 90s.

Joy Division & New Order would have been the big thing for me at the time, and coming up to my 15th birthday Seminal Live came out and The Fall became my primary obsession. Also got into thrash & death metal, grindcore and anarcho-punk around that time.
Rowche Rumblers - November 22, 2009 04:52 AM (GMT)
I was 14 in 1974, here's a pic of my fave band for so many years, :ohdear:,pic is from that year, were my fave until so called "punk" arrived.
Aubrey The Cat - November 22, 2009 07:17 AM (GMT)

In 1988 it was all thrash metal for me, but my faves, my a longshot were Slayer.
Opel - November 22, 2009 11:00 AM (GMT)
innit funny how we were all quite cool when we were 14 ?
exept for me ofc with my dead or alive obsession and my customised flourescent trainers.

The Beatles, The Kinks and The Doors.
I was soon to be switched on to 'new wave'.
Liam - November 22, 2009 12:24 PM (GMT)
1983
Stiff Little Fingers. I had the "All the Best" compilation and "Hanx!" live album and must have worn them out playing them.
Returnahh - November 22, 2009 12:25 PM (GMT)
The year was 1975 and I was probably split between ALICE COOPER and RUSH.

It is difficult to remember precisely. Either Black Sabbath, Transvision Vamp or the Wedding Present. It was a time of transition.
