Another excellent set, not quite as mosh-tastic an atmosphere as Poole but a seriously tight performance yet again. MES on really good form - worked hard on the vocals tonight, possibly more so than at Poole - inserted a crack about Peter Kaye during Bury to much amusement from the crowd. Setlist as I recall

Intro (Tape of Bury - possibly the album version?)
Your Future Our Clutter
Strangetown
Sloppy Floor
Wolf Kidult Man
My Door
Cowboy George
Bury
Duped
Wings
Scenario
Chino
Psykick Dancehall
Reformation (blistering version with extra lyrics from MES' little black lyrics book)

On for approx 1 hour

Apologies to anyone who looked for me in The Ship, but five minutes after I walked in a friday night kareoke started up and after sitting through snow patrol & some R&B "bangers" we decided to decamp to another watering hole where conversation was actually possible....

Roll on Bristol & I'm seriously considering Leamington Spa if I can square it at work.

Great night. Pretty packed venue, although still amazes me why people feel the need to talk almost the entire way through! MES seemed really focused and sound was excellent.

Oh and they also played 'Psykick Dancehall' near the end of the set, 2nd or 3rd to last I think?

Billybigbananas - November 21, 2009 01:10 AM (GMT)
Quite right - Edited, cheers!

And Mohican Karl is back!!!

What a cracking set. I'd say that's the most rigorous and solid Fall i've seen as far as i can 'look back'. There's no dead wood and as has been said already there's a real focus.

Good crowd, though i could never see it developing into anything lively enough to warrant coming on again with Blindness, though that would've been perfect.
No matter what the next or the last album's like this line-up's getting it spot on live.

Gaspop - November 21, 2009 03:15 PM (GMT)
Wings, wings, wings. If only they'd brought it back in time for the Hamburg gig

Basmikel - November 21, 2009 03:31 PM (GMT)
Another excellent night apart from the sound problem I complained about here: http://z1.invisionfree.com/forums/thefall/...5#entry11610679

I've never seen the band smile this much.

Some highlights:

Brilliant intro tape and opening Future/Clutter.
During that song (I think) a guy in front of the keys filmed Eleni until she picked up a camera & returned the dubious favor until he stopped.

Another guy in the front kept poking up his camera phone at Mark during My Door Is Never. First, Mark tried to tangle it up in his mic chord, then gave him three little bobs on the head with the mic. If that wasn't enough hilariousness for one evening, he then reached down for the guy's face, held his chin firmly and sang "Will I prove my nerve to you, or impress your dipshit head like others do...I crave your death inside my mind's eye!" a few inches from his face, with a great grim smile and a loud chuckle.

Having walked around Exeter for hours trying to find a decent pub (without kids' karaoke) or even an off-license or news agent's open, I mentioned to my mate what an apt opener Strangetown was (and a great version it was, too). He laughed and replied: "Yeah, it really is a shit hole, isn't it?" A miserable looking old woman trying hard to put a blanket on the evening's proceedings heard us and walked off. The mood improved.

Another spirited version of Bury.

Keiron, as always, nowadays.

Eleni did her best MES impression in Duped and cracked up.

The guy behind me singing "along" to Wings (and how could anyone duplicate Mark's on the spot delivery?) actually had a good voice and sounded so happy I couldn't stop smiling. It wasn't a bad duet, actually! I would've had a Bonkers In Exeter if I'd taped it.

Truly inspired singing (from MES only) in Scenario. Pity I couldn't hear the band.

Pogoing about in general to Psykick Dancehall.

A great extended Reformation with large parts of the front rows following Mark around, hoping for the mic that was never dropped.

No encore. (Yes, that's a highlight...I'd rather have a long set and no running back and forth. A mid-set fag break wouldn't be a bad idea, though...)

Meeting lots of pleasant non-student south westeners. Pity that the bar stopped serving so soon after it ended.

If I'm not mistaken the setlist was:

Intro (several tape versions of Bury)
Your Future Our Clutter
Strangetown
Sloppy Floor
My Door
Cowboy George
Bury
Duped
Wings
Chino
Wolf Kidult Man
Scenario
Psykick Dancehall
Reformation!

It's remarkable that yesterday wasn't the highlight of the tour. (For me, that would be Poole.) Now, what do I have to pawn to make it to Bristol?

PS. Sometime early on, it looked like Mark put a little tape recorder with a blinking red light on one of Pete's amps. Interesting.

BBB neglected to mention the speed dating night in the second bar we got to. needless to say, we both failed to pull. I think it was his fall T-shirt that blew it for us.
I'll put this one up on Dime when I get home. Musically the best of the 3 nights I got to see. MES on sparkling form.

I kept thinking how long can they keep this up without wobbling off some edge.
They're impressive The Fall, and how many times have i just stopped and thought that over the years... well a lot actually, but this occasion as i've said already was mightily solid.

I'd really appreciate if it could be done as some common or garden upload—Rapid, Mega or whatever, i'm Dimeless in Gaza.

DeusErac - November 22, 2009 04:18 AM (GMT)
No Dime invites to be had in Upstate New York, so I'd second the (beggars) notion that uploads elsewhere in the public domain would be greatly and enthusiastically appreciated, please and thanks.

splart_plantation - November 22, 2009 08:23 AM (GMT)
Think I was stood next to Daren? Chap w/2 young kids down the front, one who looked pretty bored, bless. Twas certainly someone known to Elena, who 1) took a photo of him whilst playing, and 2) handed down her microphone to him to shout, "Is There Anybody There?" at the start of Psykick Dancehall.

A great gig. MES very focussed indeed; possibly the best I've ever seen him.

They stuck to the setlist, which was:

Our Future, Your Clutter
Strangetown
Sloppy Floor
My Door Is Never
Cowboy George
I'm Not From Bury
Wings
I've Been Duped
Chino Splashback
Wolf Kidult Man
Scenario
Psykick Dancehall
Reformation (over 10 mins? Seemed to go on for ages)

No encore.

Went w/2 Fall virgins, both who enjoyed the gig. Got some vid'n'pics to upload.

I think it could have been when you kept asking them how many bootlegs they had & what their Dime ratio was that put the final nail in the coffin though.

how big is Young Gnomes now?
I've got a fine selection of shirt's that he must be growing into at the same rate that I grow out of them.

1st gig for nearly 2 years,at the front,at his feet, delighted that I "get" The Fall.
some may say he's lost it,I would say he's absolutely got it.
I had a wonderfull time.

You've been missed by many.
Southampton was one of those "getting the Fall" nights for me. Still have a tune in my head I'm convinced was brand new, though set list tells me different.
Shame I couldn't make any of the others though, Poole and Exeter looked like great nights too. Definitely best to see them in the provinces, Koko was good by London standards, but the next night was something special.

'ow do.

been buying fall stuff since code:selfish; slates was the first fall lp I heard whenever that came out (81?)

phoenix gig was 1st fall gig for me. bit slow getting off the mark...

people say he's lost it, but they've been saying that for years...the guy has never lost it and will never lose it.

people say to me all his stuff sounds the same, but actually no two fall songs sound the same. what the fall does have is a recognisable signature and because of this, like a few rare artists, are very hard to cover without sounding like a pale imitation unless you radically re-interpret them ie joni mitchell, the beatles, radiohead, kraftwerk, ie trailblazers ie that is where the genius is. mark e smith is not a genius, but what he does is.

even my wife was impressed. she's not a big music fan but her comment was: "it makes a lot more sense live". an encore was not necessary.

it's nice to be here on this forum.

I'm pretty sure this was me! (Forum noob here, sorry!, though not Fall noob by any means) I was the tall skinny bloke in 50,000 Fall fans tee, 20 years younger than most there :P and 2 or 3 bodies back from Pete Greenway.
Wings is my absolute fave fall song, and I was having such a good time that I didn't really give a damn that its not de rigeur to sing along at Fall shows! MES himself didnt seem to deviate much from the studio version in this performance IIRC, certainly not to the same degree as with songs like Blindness.

I joined the moshing during Psykick. Reformation was absolutely storming.

Anyone else remember the big chap at very front who moshed the whole way through? During Reformation, he started punching the air in front of him with great vigour, and kept accidentally hitting people, some of whom got pissed off with this!

I thought MES said something like "I'll give you a good reason, to die!" to the guy. After the gig I spoke to the chap who had had his head held by Mark, and I said "Wow, Mark sang to you!", and the guy replied with something along the lines of "Yeah, he's a fucking twat"

Oh and apologies to the gentleman at the very front with the Imperial Wax Solvent shirt, as I nabbed Pete's setlist seconds after the band walked off stage, and I think this chap had been planning to get it himself! Sorry mate!

I have plenty of pics and videos from the night too, as well as the setlist - will post at weekend (I'm at work at mo)

I've been into the Fall for 4 years and seen them about 5 times (including the 1st April 07 Hammersmith show), and the band's performance in Exeter was without a doubt, the absolute TIGHTEST I've seen from them yet
