Description: which have since closed down

There must be hundreds, such as:

London Cricklewood Galtymore.
London Hammersmith Palais.
London Astoria.

Renamed venues (i.e. Town & Country Club --> Forum) don't count.

I think so.

It was a Witherspoons for a while, but I think it closed a few months back.

Nope, The Station still thrives I am pleased to inform.

Oh, it was always a dive, but when I was growing up there was a club underneath called The Trax, which played the BEST music ever. Better that anywhere I've ever found since, and I've been to a fair few places, I can tell you.

I used to go three times a week all during my A levels, and it was there I learned to love Iggy, Magazine, Bowie, The Fall and loads of other great stuff including, surprisingly, Blue Oyster Cult (!), which I still love today.

Happy times.....

Cartoon Club, Croydon...

They played one Sunday i remember, the ceiling was just inches above my head, and i'm a relative short-arse. It was the first time i'd seen A Pop Video by The Fall, it seemed like some sort of miracle.

The Ace in Brixton.

chris.southon - November 19, 2009 01:55 PM (GMT)
Croydon Underground
Bournemouth Town Hall (not used for gigs for many years now)

it might be easier to list venues still standing :(

I remember Trax :D only went a few times before it changed into a fairly standard 80's white shirt and tie disco...remember the music being good too, they used to play Rock lobster by B52's every night:-)

Frank's in Colne was even better:-) Saw The Sisters Of Mercy and King Kurt there on consecutive weeks.

I think everywhere should play Rock Lobster every single night!

I remember Frank's too. And The Angels on Wednesday's was a regular haunt of mine - Bowie and Roxy night.

God, I'm old.

Music scene in Colne has picked up a lot in the past few years. Plenty of good venues and lots of interesting new bands.

The Charley Syndrome are playing at The Shepherds tonight

Sounds good, but not good enough to make me want to live there again. I've done my time - 18 years living in Nelson is longer that any reasonable person should have to bear.

anonyarena - November 19, 2009 03:33 PM (GMT)
Most of the places they have played in New York over the years have shut down..but that's not a stunner because most of the cool clubs in New York in general have shut down..the places I've seen The Fall in that are now gone include:

Virgin Music Megastore Union Square (out of biz)
The Palladium Theater (torn down)
The Network Club (Long Island)
The Peppermint Lounge
The Lone Star Cafe
Coney Island High
The Academy
The Cat Club
The Grand
Brownie's
The Ritz
Tramps

A place I saw them at but don't know if it's still there or not is:

Boogaloo Bar

and other NYC venues that I have not personally seen them play in but that I know they have played, and are now also gone include:

Bonds
CBGB
Studio B
Danceteria
The Mudd Club
The Underground
(this place is in the gigography for 3rd of June '81 with Fad Gadget, but I've never heard of the place. I presume it has to be gone.)
Interferon Club (this place is in the gigography for 13th of June '81 but I've never heard of the place either. I presume it also has to be gone,)

Venues The Fall played which is still there, but under another name are:

Irving Plaza (It's now called The Filmore)
North 6 (Now called Macri Park or something like that?)

Places they played which moved from it's old location but still in operation:

White Columns. (now art space only, no music)
Knitting Factory (Now moved to Brooklyn from lower Manhattan)

Great idea for a thread.

Some long lost Fall venues in Birmingham i can recall - Barbarella's, Cedar Club, Digbeth Civic Hall, Barfly, Hummingbird.

Wracking my brains here. The Institute?

Wracking my brains here. The Institute?

Digbeth Civic became the Institute. The building is still there I think it's club or something now which don't do live music.

The Powerhaus in Hurst Street was another defunct venue

The Top Rank became The Hummingbird which became the O2 Academy which gets demolished next year.

I think the Stourbridge Rock Cafe has gone too, I think a wall fell down before it closed.

mjungblu - November 19, 2009 04:43 PM (GMT)
in Hannover, Germany

I.C.C. - stopped their way of doing live acts just after The Fall’s gig. It was the first and only gig here; later closed

SOXS - closed (plan of erasing the building)

in Dortmund, Germany

FZW (Freizeitzentrum West) - the old venue is closed, they reopened under the same name a new building. You can find it nowadays near the Dortmunder U.

Ach, i never read the thread properly, thought it was actually defunct venues rather than ones still standing.

I forgot about The Powerhouse/haus as well.

Digbeth Civic is still there, a great old venue. Think some wrestling used to come from there in the 70s. jackie Pallo Mick McManus and the rest.

The Rock cafe in Stourbridge did close down, some high winds took a wall out.

The Cartoon down this way is re-opening soon at least.

Apart from the Green Dragon, and that's only a pub. :(

Saw a fellow FOF'ers band from this parish play there a couple of months ago.

Hexen hour - November 19, 2009 06:34 PM (GMT)
Band on the Wall, Manchester. I saw The Blue Orchids and Nico there once too.

Cappuccino and a slice of quiche - November 19, 2009 07:05 PM (GMT)

Feast your eyes on the faded glory of the Vortex, the Marquee, the Croydon Greyhound, the Hammersmith Palais, the Astoria etc etc:

If only they'd played the 2 i's Coffee Bar as well.

Jockey Club, Newport, Kentucky--the first place I ever saw the Gruppe. I've seen them 6 times in all, and the other five places are still in operation.

Hmm, I've never seen them twice in the same venue, but that's not on purpose.

The Hub Club in Bath.
The Point in Cardiff.

Both closed due to noise restrictions.

Flattened to make way for a road they never built.
