Title: Another Fallen???
simpo - November 12, 2009 06:42 PM (GMT)
Someone called Dean Jackson, claims to have played with the Fall. New name on me.... anyone??
Fritter - November 12, 2009 06:50 PM (GMT)
I used to have a flatmate called that, he did like The Fall to an extent and he did look a bit like S. Hanley, but it couldn't be, no.
Surplus Johnny - November 12, 2009 06:53 PM (GMT)
It's not the mystery longhair guitarist from the German tv gig in 87', perchance.
simpo - November 12, 2009 07:11 PM (GMT)
only info i have so far is that he roadied for them and 'played live' - trying to get some details

Yes, I think he was a roadie who came on stage to play guitar. February 1989 it was.
simpo - November 12, 2009 08:56 PM (GMT)
was it just for one song?
which gig??
(Should this mean another chapter?!)
Gaspop - November 12, 2009 09:04 PM (GMT)
Oh no! I just bought the updated version! Just wanted to say that I just started reading your book while in Hamburg, Dave. It's one of the best reads in a long time. Well done!

Tuesday, 14 February 1989 Off Beat Night, Munich, Germany. It was broadcast on German TV. I have a video of it but can't remember offhand how many songs he played on, it may have been only one or two. Brix wasn't there - her and MES had recently split up - so the roadie presumably played her parts.

"A Valentine's day fallen"
I've copyrighted that Simpo, and the cost of re-using it is £5.
simpo - November 12, 2009 10:11 PM (GMT)
that'll be £295 cheaper than a line or two from Container Drivers, then. :D

Thanks Gaspop... much appreciated. From the missives i've had recently it seems quite a few people waited for the paperback. And I can assure you that unless there are major, major developments there won't be another edition in the foreseeable future! :D

Does that include sacking the whole band mid-tour? Because it must be due to happen again sometime soon...

Here's the wickedpedia link
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Phillip_BoaStill doing the rounds, apparently. From memory, he was a German indie-rock type along with his band the Voodoo Club, popular in his homeland, less so abroad. Mates with John Robb, so put out some stuff on Vinyl Drip. Very percussive, there's a track called (I think) Skull, which is absolutely brilliant. He signed to a major, they failed to promote him and the resulting LP 'Hair' languishes in bargain bins to this day. Bought it, it's ok, nowt special.

Well, yes, I could have done that, but I had too many things to do the other day...
Anyway, I have now watched it and can report that he played on 2 songs - Cab It Up and Deadbeat Descendant.
Conway - November 17, 2009 02:10 AM (GMT)
So, is this your man, Simpo? Does the date tie in with what he says... or do we have another mystery Fallen????
Carrie Bagg-Mann - November 17, 2009 11:25 AM (GMT)
Come to think of it, they had some longhair roadie type feller on drums when they played the "With Liverpool From Love" festival at L'pool Royal Court, circa February '86. Seemed competent, but fucked up the drumming a bit on "Cruiser's Creek". A beleathered, sulky Karl Burns was in the audience.
Carrie Bagg-Mann - November 17, 2009 11:28 AM (GMT)
(well, more of a concert than a festival. New Order were on first, then yer Fall, then yer Smiths (Morrissey's groope, not Mak and Brix doing an accapella duet). Fucking Margie Clarke was on as well. And it was "From Manchester With Love", orbviously. Apart from that, jolly well remembered by me, eh, readers?

Phillip Boa's gig was actually playback that night which of course annoyed most of the crowd. When someone threw a full mug of beer at him Boa went after the bloke and stormed from the stage while the playback still went on. Still quite a historic moment in german music television!
I didn't find it on youtube but you can read the whole story in every detail here (in German):
http://www.boastuff.de/history/babysnakes/offbeatnight.phpBoa claims he was later comforted by Mark E. Smith but I very much doubt that <_<

Paul Hanley, in case you didn't realise.

I managed to get a screen cap of the guy from February 1989...
shotbybothsides - November 20, 2009 02:53 PM (GMT)
Nah... doesn't look like him (Dean Jackson). He played keyboards anyway, not guitar. Not sure if he played any actual gigs though.
Am on the case - just emailed him. Will 'tweet'Dave or something if I get a response.

*that* was Paul Hanley? Hey, mean mullet Paul! (soz about the terrible spelling/wording in the original post , btw.)
Buy Kurious! - November 26, 2009 03:41 AM (GMT)
Was that bloke who appeared on those famous Viz comics t-shirts really once a drummer for The Fall, like MES said, or was he likely joking?
stuart - November 26, 2009 12:17 PM (GMT)
Yes, that was Paul Hanley again.
MOD-MOCK-GOTH - November 26, 2009 12:25 PM (GMT)
