Title: Cheesy songs I like.
Description: Choose 3

Sven Hassel Schmuck - November 11, 2009 10:09 PM (GMT)
There are plenty of great cheesy songs. I listen to all these depending on mood.

Which is your favourite? Pick 3

Audrey Wetherspoon - November 11, 2009 11:58 PM (GMT)
I had no idea the War song was cheesy, but I've picked that.

I'll add The Runner by the Three Degrees and Harper Valley PTA by Dolly Parton.

Fritter - November 12, 2009 12:05 AM (GMT)
Low Rider - not cheesy
Oh Lori - cheesy but fucking gorgeous
Sky High - they were obviously The Big Thing when The Man From Hong Kong was filmed, an extraordinary film with an extraordinarily repetitive soundtrack.

And would have had Glass Of Champagne if we were allowed four - Moogtastic, mate.

GraemeLovesPinkLady - November 12, 2009 12:08 AM (GMT)
It'd be quicker if I just list the classy songs I like.

Anyway, at the moment, I like Chu by f(x), Hey by e.Via and Abracadabra by Brown Eyed Girls - it's South Korean week chez GLPL.

[I don't think I know of any of the songs you've listed Sven. Maybe if I heard some, there'd be a glimmer of recognition, but I don't know them from their names]

flickeringlexicon - November 12, 2009 12:30 AM (GMT)
Low Rider - definitely not cheesy. I picked that, "Laughter In the Rain," and something so cheesy that this list couldn't even contain it: "Stars Are Blind" by Paris Hilton. This is actually the greatest pop song of all time, but so many people will be scared away that they will miss out on the Faux-Reggae Fluff Puff Delight of it...

Not me - sounds like a challenge so I'm off to Youtube right now and will report back shortly.

ryaneno - November 12, 2009 12:47 AM (GMT)
Boys Of Summer by Don Henley, again debatable as a cheesy/kitsch song, but it's a guilty pleasure...

GraemeLovesPinkLady - November 12, 2009 12:52 AM (GMT)
...and I'm back. The video is bloody awful, but the tune is crackerjack. It makes me think immediately of The Tide Is High by Blondie - it's that good.

"Paris Hilton for the win" is a phrase I thought I'd never type, but...:)

spiring - November 12, 2009 06:32 AM (GMT)
At first, I thought that these were just song titles; didn't recognize many, but titles like "Low rider war", "January pilot", "Sky high jigsaw", "Love is in the air, John Paul Young", "Rhinestone cowboy Glen Campbell", "Sugar me, Lyndsey De-Paul", "Muskrat love captain and Tenille" and "Hold me close, David Essex" did awake my curiosity.

I told you! Yes, I first heard it without the video, which is probably best. B)

This is someone who doesn't like disco.

Low Rider, again, not cheesy.

Can I have 'Arms of Mary' by Sutherland Brothers and Quiver?

Orphiztic - November 12, 2009 11:25 AM (GMT)
Hold Me Close, Barbados and Brown Girl In The Ring.

Yes, defintely. Ideally, you'd hear it on the radio, but there's absolutely no way it'd ever get played over here, simply because of who she is.

As I said, I like some disco songs individually (particularly Ohio Players and Kool & the Gang), it's just the wide sweeping swath of the genre I minded. And Faux-reggae isn't disco, to be technical. <_< :P B)

Exactly. When I first heard the song, I didn't know who was singing it. I think that helped me in the objectivity department. By the time I found out, it was too late... :)

GraemeLovesPinkLady - November 12, 2009 03:14 PM (GMT)
Well, I'm inured to it now, but I know what you mean. Being cool is the enemy of music appreciation.

What a great line, I'm a-gonna quote you on that. That's a concept that took me a long time to figure out, but I'm glad I did. :)

GraemeLovesPinkLady - November 12, 2009 03:24 PM (GMT)
I'm no better - it took me until I was 24 to realise it. At the time I was completely burnt out with music and trapped in a prison of my own making i.e. music had to be meaningful, live music is superior to studio music, acts that put on a performance are trivial compared to those that just look at their shoes and so on and so on.

Then I heard Pink Lady.

:applaud: ... and then the world turned dayglo, ya know ya know! :)

Low Rider is class and devoid of fromage.

Sugar Me gets my cheese vote. What happened to Lyndsey de Paul?

Low Rider was in there because it's seen as a staple of Guilty Pleasures nights, apparently. I don't get the irony in that sort of thing, and the only reason I know these songs are cheesy is because they have been deemed as such.

To me they are all very good, if sometimes slightly silly , songs from my younger days.

Wonder which songs of the last 10 years will go down as guilty pleasures in the future?

Zoot Horn Polo - November 12, 2009 11:42 PM (GMT)
I own all these songs. This is a fair reflection of my record collection.

I loathe the phrase 'guilty pleasures'. It was that mate of Paul Weller's who started it, I think. The one who used to be a policeman.

That last sentence says so much :D

Spanish Flea by Herb Alpert is pretty darn cheesy and awesome

**edit**

Prado Perez' Peanut Vendor

Liam - November 13, 2009 12:09 AM (GMT)

"Laughter in the Rain" really reminds me of early childhood in the 70s. As does "sing, sing a song, sing out loud, sing out strong" etc etc etc.

Rowche Rumblers - November 13, 2009 04:27 AM (GMT)
Sky High...let me go off to YT see if it's there, haven't heard it in say 20 years(?), :( brings back memories of youthful time, actually B.T.F...before the Fall.

I would offer Georgia sung by Tony Christie on it's good to be me.

And also the best Andy Partridge impression ever, which is pretty good considering nobody had heard of him yet.

Fritter - November 13, 2009 04:44 PM (GMT)
I've always had a moog-based soft spot for Andrew Gold's Never Let Her Slip Away, I would swop that for Typically Tropical (which is just silly) and it'd be an almost perfect list.

Awwwww

marvell78 - November 13, 2009 05:57 PM (GMT)
rhinestone cowboy

because it is an intelligent and moving song about would be celebrities

And I dream of the things I'll do

Hey double-R! That is a good, disco-influenced song, isn't it?

Yeah, forgot it was thatttt disco-ish! :( Actually, Magic by Pilot would have been great on the list. Though Sky High hit #1 in Japan, whatever that means, well, they look somewhat like a rock band.(?)

Magic is one of my all time favorites. I think 'bubble gum' would be a better term than disco in this case...?

Upon further thinking, takes me a while to do that, :( we could easily add in another 100 songs to that list, the 70's may have been the #1 era for cheesy-ness.

Was it Pilot who did "January" as well? Both of those songs I just could not help liking at the time, no matter how hard I tried - they didn't look as cool (to a 10 year old) on Top Of The Pops as Mud. And certainly not as appealing as Fox.

Fox - cheesy? No way!
