Title: Festive 50 - 2009

Conway - October 29, 2009 12:21 AM (GMT)
Continuing on in homage to John Peel, Dandelion Radio is once again compiling a Festive 50 countdown of the year's best tracks.

http://www.dandelionradio.com/festive50.htm

Mark Whitby from Dandelion Radio has emailed me to let me know that voting is now open at the above link through to 30 November. He says: "Obviously there isn't much Fall stuff to vote for this year (although I think Hungry Freaks, Daddy from the live CD would be considered eligible), we'd still very much like to know the views of Fall fans on the year's best music and, frankly, value input from your website as a way of maintaining FF high standards."

There will be random giveaways of Mark's excellent book on the Festive Fifty a copy of Ken Garner's Peel Sessions book.

Let us know what you've voted for.

GraemeLovesPinkLady - October 29, 2009 12:37 AM (GMT)
I voted for:

1. Get Out - Ikio Ayaka
2. Fan - Nisennenmondai
3. Kono SPEED No Saki E - Mass of the Fermenting Dregs

[No Perfume this year - it's not been a good year for them - whereas last year it would've been all Perfume...if I'd voted that is, haha]

Looks like it;on their website it says 'A show featuring all the results and the competition winners broadcasts from Christmas Day until the end of January'.

By my reckoning that's 1.3157 tracks a day.The DJ's going to be shagged out by the end of that little lot as well...........

Orphiztic - October 29, 2009 05:09 PM (GMT)

working in / cashing in on a dead man's name.

nlgbbbblth - October 30, 2009 05:24 PM (GMT)
open to correction but a previous top 50 run by Dandelion post-Peel's death saw the results taking weeks to emerge. Not given out till end January.

unacceptable.

I thought they were working to keep the spirit of John Peels approach to music going - not sure they make much/any money out of the enterprise; Radio 1's 'Peel in aspic website' and some of the compilations that have come out are more akin to cashing in, I would suggest.

the_gav - October 31, 2009 02:57 PM (GMT)
yeah, cause the only rewards people seek are monetary ones, right?

i'd give my support to dandelion if they stopped the endless namedropping. john peel is one of the few heros i've ever had and this is one hell of a long way from the mark. i find it embarassing, phony and demeaning.

let the man sleep.

Fair enough.

Almost nothing of real ground breaking interest has been released that I like this year.

Can't be arsed to pick anything.

@the gav and nlgbbbblth...

I don't believe that Dandelion are "cashing in" at all on
Peel's legacy, I think they genuinely are inspired by him.

I know DJ Neil Jenkins for example was personally affected by Peel's death, sadly it coincided with his wedding day. I wouldn't wish that on anyone.

Re the broadcasting of f50s...
After JP passed away in Oct 2004 (can it really be 5 years ago?) Rob Da Bank took over his R1 slot and broadcast the posthumous F50 in Dec 2004 with his "OneMusic" colleague Huw Stephens. They also presented the 2005 F50. It was in 2006 that the baton was passed to Dandelion. They "broadcast" the F50 on rotation throughout January.

Peel played his over three consectutive nights each December.

Dragging it out for a whole month - the first month of the following year is surely taking the piss.

Apologies if that sounds harsh.

No mention of Slippy Floor or Hot Cake. :(

This would never have been allowed in a real Festive 50.

I like Los Campesinos! quite a bit, but they didn't make the best song in 2009. Still better them than Coldplay or Arctic Monkeys.

Number 6 though, eh?

Can't be bad....
