Gene Vincents Amphetamine Breath - October 4, 2009 07:51 PM (GMT)
Assembled from a book I'm reading:- a quiz about an obscure guitarist what nobody likes....at least one of these is eminently guessable.

1) In what suburb of Sheffield did Bailey grow up?

2) In what year did he get his first engagement as a professional musician? 1952 (Friendly Visitor)

3) What was the name of the fictitious senile and embittered musician Derek credited with the invention of free improvisation?

4) Name the tap dancer Bailey recorded with. Will Gaines- (1 point to friendly_visitor.) There is a vid of this going on on Youtube! A friend of mine nearly crashed his car laughing when they played this on Radio 3

5) The percussionist with whom Bailey recorded “Dart Drug” was briefly a member of which revered prog band? King Crimson (1 point to Cappy)

8) Name the Austrian composer that influenced Bailey's playing style. Anton Webern. (1 point to friendly_visitor )

9) Composer Joseph Holbrooke, after whom Bailey named his first improv trio, was called the Cockney what? The Cockney Wagner (1 point to huh)

10) What was the one guitar effects pedal that Bailey regularly used? Volume or swell pedal (Fritter 1 point)

5 - First guess = Soft Machine.

Second guess = King Crimson.

7 - Hustler.

5 = King Crimson- Jamie Muir. Was on "Lark's Tongues". (adopts stern Jeremy "the new Bamber" Paxman voice:) I will give you the point, but in future I will only accept the first answer you give.

All the rest of the ponts are still up for grabs. And what do points mean? Well not prizes because Bailey's art eschewed commodification by its very nature.

Oi! Some of us here are fans, you know! :D

Anyway:

4 - Will Gaines

7 - Musics

8 - Anton Webern

PS- Which is the book that you're reading by the way? I'm definitely interested. :)

huh - October 5, 2009 06:54 AM (GMT)
Is it Improvisation you're reading...?
Great book. I suppose i could go and source the answers but that would be cheating.

Joseph Holbrooke was the 'Cockney Wagner', and that band was with Tony Oxley and Gavin Bryars.

Gene Vincents Amphetamine Breath - October 5, 2009 08:28 AM (GMT)
The book I am reading is called "Derek Bailey and the story of free improvisation" and is by Ben Watson, which means I occasionally have cause to skip gaily past great swathes of annoying verbiage. When I am not laughing myself silly. Did you know? There are two quite distinct sorts of silence in music, "composed silence" and "improvised silence"...and improvised silence is better. (He left out "equipment fucking up silence").
On the plus side there is lots of Derek talking (he was far from posh DJash), and even an anecdote of "when Eric Morecambe spoke to me".

3 whole points. You have leapt into the lead!

2) 1954

I saw him lots of times, but always enjoyed 'him' more than his music to be honest - although the one with feedback is fantastic. I loved the idea of him practising by playing along to Pirate Junglist Radio Stations in Hackney.

No but close (and I concur). In the book is much about his practicing and playing along to just about anything.

No ?????I hope for the sake of fuck Ben Watson hasn't made up a part of Sheffield. That's just the sort of thing a cunt like that would do!

2) final attempt: he was born in about 1930 and I know he started playing at a young age, so....1948
