Title: John Cooper Clarke vs Ted Chippington

nervous_system - July 30, 2009 09:22 AM (GMT)
I've seen both of these men support The Fall and they were both fairly badly received. Very few people seemed to recognise Chippington at the Hammersmith Palais in 2007 and some grew fairly hostile. Everyone knew who Johnny Clarke was on the three occasions I've seen him act as warm-up man but the crowd seemed fairly bored and, on a couple of occasions, actively antagonistic. So, given the choice, who would you rather see? And any other comment on comedians who've occupied support slots would be much appreciated.

both equally, yet differently.

JCC - I've heard most of it hundreds of times, but he's more on my humorous wavelength and there's a particular legitimacy to the nostalgia. But I've no objection to Ted sharing the exposure. I'd rather have Wet Dog than either, but you can't have everything.

Can't possibly choose. Both great in different ways.

Oh, fuck it. Chippington for his version of 'She loves You'

erm, you can actually vote for both.

Ted Chippington. But only because I've never seen JCC. :(
Ted rules, though.

Is reciting She Loves You in a droll Brummie accent really funny?

No. That's why he doesn't do that one anymore....

Still the funniest man alive though

Nah...not even the funniest Brummie alive.

Not while Jasper Carrott's still breathing, anyway.

:)

JCC v Ted? It's a close one,but I think I'd have to plump for Johnny C,if only because I've never had a discussion with Ted about football.

I would like to see Ted Chippington support The Fall because I've already seen JCC do it - he was good and everything but I preferred it when he did more poetry. Never seen Ted but I love his drawl like mad.

Clearly not.

(Too close to the original, for me!)

Try Peter Sellers doing it:

roughly speaking.

precisely speaking.

Given that many of Ted's routines begin with "I was walking down the street one day" he seems a natural companion to Blindness.

A lazy JCC is to be avoided.

Both got my vote, in fact anyone but Safi

John Cooper Clarke hands down, seen him loads of times and each time you can feel this enormous warm glow from the audience towards him, much like the feelings that mes engenders. Ted's ok but I've seen him completely stink the place out and nothing can compete with that brilliant drawl of JCC's. Worth the price of admission for "Evidently Chickentown" alone.
