Title: 1978 Fender Music Master Bass used by Rob Barbato
Description: for sale
simon taylor - June 15, 2009 12:49 AM (GMT)
I'm selling the Music Master Bass I used the entire time I was in The Fall. Figured I'd put it up on here in case anyone wanted it. Selling it for $550. I would ship to the UK if you pay for Shipping and Customs.

Rob
Surely it would be more Rock 'n' Roll to smash it up on stage at the end of a set?
Just my way of saying (again!) let's have you guys out doing a couple of shows in So Cal soon.

Oh bollocks, I was looking to buy a bass and this would be a nice one to have but....

Music Master is short scale isn't it? Does it have an after-market pickup?

I have been in touch with Bob over the last few days.
I was prepared to pay for this to be shipped to the UK, but I've heard today it's been sold.
Shame.

Bugger!
Am just getting to the 'buying a second guitar because it might make me sound better' stage of not being able to play very well.

Not sure what the pick up was, but saw the photo before it was pulled - Rob's bass propped up against a sofa bed.
Plenty of bass players around here, hope it was snapped up by one of them.

I gather it's staying in L.A.

$500 for a Fender Musicmaster Bass (£300 ?) is INCREDIBLY cheap (let alone for one that's seen active service with The Fall ) !!! :o

I thought that - as did lots of others it seems - although I wouldn't want a short scale bass, Fall-historic or not.
R.W.Emerson - June 18, 2009 10:07 PM (GMT)
What's wrong with short-scale bass guitars !? Tina Weymouth , anyone ?
Fritter - June 18, 2009 10:12 PM (GMT)
No, she's great - but if I had a bass I would want maximum length/depth.
duckpin236 - June 18, 2009 10:18 PM (GMT)
There are practically no serious short scale basses on the market although I wouldn't want to play anything else.
With a Music Master, the Duncan Hot Rails works nicely.

It obviously is a matter of preference ......, but that guitar was going REALLY cheap , wasn't it ? :o :o (1978 !!!!!)

I may be being really dim here; what's the advantage of a short scale bass? Presumably it's tuned the same so you still get the low notes of a long scale one?
$500 for a 1978 Fender anything is a bargain all right.
duckpin236 - June 18, 2009 11:03 PM (GMT)
You are certainly not dim: I have large hands - they span 11 inches on a ruler - and I can play a short scale bass almost like a guitar.
I have a red '78 Music Master and if I could have gotten this one, I would have lowered the pitch on each string[more like paid some one to do it] 3 or 4 half steps and put in a preamp for the lowest string.
And the scale is not that short: 30 inches versus 34 inches.
Would have liked to try lowering the pitch and making a bassier bass

I had a black 1980 Musicmaster. I still have some nice photos of it.
Bob is a big lad and during his Fall days, played the short scale bass with huge distortion. Much like a rhythm guitarist plays off against a lead guitarist, Bob’s bas worked well with Dave’s more twangy ‘lead’ style.
This is what made the Reformation line up sound unique.

Yeah . he must be quite big--that bass looked like a toy with him holding it ! :applaud: Why did he sell it so cheap , though ?!?

A young hanleyfender (1982/3?) with his first Fender bass.
Note the original Jap Squier Strat as well.
You can see why I would have loved Bob's bass.
R.W.Emerson - June 19, 2009 09:45 PM (GMT)
God , you must have loved that bass --what happened to it ? Do you play ? (I love Squier guitars ,as well . Some of the current (Chinese) ones are really good players , too .)
R.W.Emerson - June 19, 2009 09:48 PM (GMT)
P.S. Why didn't you buy R.B.'s Musicmaster ?
duckpin236 - June 19, 2009 11:04 PM (GMT)
I like Fender made in USA stuff: I have 3 American Standard Telecasters[oldest 1989] and the Music Master bass.
The Gibson Super 400s I have are more versatile but can't stand any abuse: The Fenders can really take it[tho they shouldn't have to]

It was going to cost about $1000 to ship to UK, and for taxes. That was a quote from Bob.
By the time I got back to him to say I was still interested, it was sold.
My fault for fannying about. Should have just Paypal'd him I guess.
inherant vowel-uh - June 20, 2009 10:19 AM (GMT)
Plenty more Bass in the sea (geddit? - or are they over-fished?)
duckpin236 - June 20, 2009 12:55 PM (GMT)
USA Music Master basses are not, to my knowledge, being made anymore and there aren't that many available it seems to me

[QUOTE]
are you sure about that/
i bought a 19 55 gibson es 125 last year from usa
i had to pay tax and package but i dont remermber it being that expensive
i played one of these basses, forst guitar i ever played. it was a good instrument but the problem was trying to get it to really thump. i could only do thatwith fx units. i used to play it in a lead style (had no idea how to play bass then) so it was good for melodic playing
currently have two fenders, a 72 telecaster and a 2003 jazzmaster
the jazzmaster is great to play but i cant for the life of me get it sound good (using a vox ac30). the thin treble sound is almost impossible to get rid of (maybe thats what it is famous for lol) the tele is unbeatable
have two other guitars which i am thinking of getting rid of: an old harmony rocket (1966 i think or maybe even earlier, a bit dinged here and there but otherwise in perfect condition))and a dearmond starfire (version of the 335 in great condition. i think made by guild but i am not sure)
anybody any idea of the price now of these guitars?
duckpin236 - June 21, 2009 11:30 PM (GMT)
To my knowledge, the ES 125 was the least expensive archtop Gibson ever made. The tuning machines are not of professional quality; the back is not carved; the woods are seconds, etc.....still you can get some good sounds out of it especially with foot pedals.
The bass in question needs a humbucker instead of the original single coil, in my opinion.
I have three Telecasters but of the six pickups, only one is original and that's a bridge p/u on the oldest one which is incomparable for rockabilly.
I have a single coil SD Quarterpounder paired with this and it works well.
I have replaced the other 4 pickups with humbuckers; one is a set of Bardens.
You're going to get a single coil sound with a single coil p/u. There are good replacement humbuckers that fit perfectly into Fender instruments.
I would check eBay to see if comparable guitars are for sale and then I would visit the web site of George Gruhn guitars of Nashville, Tennessee: He sells as many quality used guitars as anyone and is cheaper than the NYC and LA dealers.
