"Cantankerous curmodgen... 28th studio album... bard of Salford... northern... misanthropic ranting... bit of a racket... by turns wonderful and frightening... violins... a real return to form." Q magazine, three stars.

what he said, then nobody will be playing it in a year.
hofstadter - May 26, 2009 12:30 PM (GMT)
Couldn't you open a book on some of these Conway? I'd like to put on an intricate accumulator.
I predict that my personal reaction to the new album will be as follows:
Immediately on release: Cautious excitement turns to resigned acceptance of another set of slurred vocals, uninteresting lyrics and dirge-like music.
A week after purchase: Having played it about 10 times in hope of "getting it", put it on the shelf.
10 years after purchase: Give it a whirl, find myself playing it a lot, start to really like it.
Thereafter: Think that it is at least as good as Fall early-eighties landmarks, and it takes its place in the pantheon.
(I'm not kidding. I now prefer Extricate and The Infotainment Scan to Hexenduction Hour, for example. Less intricacy but more *depth*. Real New Fall LP is still in the penalty box but moving close to reappraisal.)
The Fall have to be lived forwards, but can only be understood backwards.

That's great, that.

Mojo sick trio nonsense must have been a dangled carrot- full page review and depth article or something like. Something there anyway.
And let's remember, they were a top 40 band last year (!)- though more likely an anomaly best explained by packaging fluke and/or squirrel escapade and/or slow sales week in general.

Top 75.

They've had a run of positive critical reception so I guess unless they release the greatest thing ever it will be a muted response.
Some good, some meh.
Drjohnrock - June 1, 2009 02:13 AM (GMT)
General reaction: "Not nearly as good as the stuff recorded with Brix from '83-'85."
Conway - June 2, 2009 11:27 AM (GMT)
Initial reactions will be very favourable. Could almost be best this decade.
Upon reflection, middle of the pack.
Neal Cassady - June 6, 2009 11:51 AM (GMT)
The problem: Whatever The Fall releases will get a favourable review from most critics, thus cushioning MES from the fact that it may well be shit. Which it won't be, obviously. It will be the best since the last one. 'tis the way it has always been... and always wil be.
gappy tooth - June 6, 2009 03:47 PM (GMT)
I predict Andy won't like it.
otherdave - June 6, 2009 03:53 PM (GMT)
He already told me it's the worst ever, so I've high hopes.
Hi gappy, long time no see!

Fans:
1st week: Best Fall product ever
After 1 month: Above average, but "standout" 12-minute dirge almost approaches the Classical :zzzz:
After 6 months: Tied with AYAMW in so-so LP poll
After 1 year: don't care what the new one's like, just so long as it's better than the last one
Critics:
1st week: grumpy outsiders do it again! ****½
After 1 month: welcome return to form, flawed but well worth each of the three stars I gave it on release
After 6 months: hoping for something better than last year's so-so effort
After 1 Year: ... forthcoming album, the first for many years
Me, I don't care what it's like, just so long as it's like the last one, only more so.

After 5 years: "an incrutable masterpiece, I don't know why you lot don't like it, I've always thought it was one of their best".
Afternoon, Dave.
RepoMan - July 8, 2009 09:18 PM (GMT)
went for a bit below par.
I'll probably do like I did with IWS and RPTLC and compare it to the last one.

Notebooks out, plaigarist reviewers...
Buy Kurious! - July 11, 2009 02:16 PM (GMT)
I predict it won't get any airplay on BBC Radios 1 and 2.
REX - July 12, 2009 03:19 PM (GMT)
Undoubtedly, I'll have the opposite reaction of everyone else on this board.
Anyhow, this one's going to be a middling one.

You forgot "never different, always the same".
