Wow, they're coming thick and fast - I've paid for it to be sent to my Canadian address if that's OK, it's nice to receive Red Cross parcels every now and again.

Could anybody please tape this for me? Because of the time difference it will be impossible for me to gather round the wireless at the right time.

I should be able to get together a recording for anyone who's interested... It will take a day or so.
Huge thanks to those who contributed to this.

The
Luton Haiku book really is strongly recommended, by the way. It is
absolutely excellent. Also, the website is updated with five new haikus per week, all Luton-related.
Divvey - June 1, 2009 07:38 AM (GMT)
my copy arrived today; many thanks Stephen.
The postponement of gratification is a sign of maturity, so I shall ration it out.
Good work (again)
ps, that Sky Saxon is a bit, errmm, eccentric???
Fritter - June 2, 2009 12:44 PM (GMT)
I really tried to take this one slowly, but ended up getting engrossed (hopefully i'll forget it soon so I can revisit it afresh)
Highlights for me include: the front and back covers, Sky Saxon, being made aware of Mary Lee Kortes, Elliot Smoke's nicely observed article, being made to go out and buy Machine gun Etiquette and hearing it for the first time in 30 years, 'New Talents Night', Chris Lemon's concerts piece, the Mandolin story and the Albums Covered In Their Entirety piece - on the whole all very thought-provoking and often very amusing, which is more than can be said for Mojo.

Thanks for the kind words. I wish more people would post feedback.
Londoners can now purchase Ice Cream For Quo from Sister Ray record shop on Berwick Street. But it will be a lot cheaper to buy it directly from me.
Divvey - June 8, 2009 11:23 PM (GMT)
that was my favourite record shop when I lived in those parts.

A superb publication. Enjoyed it in it's entirety. Very high standard of writing. :applaud:
New Profile Razor Unit - June 9, 2009 08:34 PM (GMT)
I liked best:
- The Sky Saxon interview, he's barking I tell ya!
- The thing about Ballroom Blitz
- The Mandolin Story
- The new talent night in Leicester review
However, I only scored 4 points when I played the cat game after reading it.
But it is all good.
Fritter - June 9, 2009 10:17 PM (GMT)
How does one get to hear that Mary Lou Kortes album? Is it widely available - it's drawn blank stares so far.
Divvey - June 9, 2009 11:39 PM (GMT)
I scored zero on the cats

It's credited to 'Mary Lee's Corvette'. I'll be in touch with info.

The Residents covered A James Brown live record. I really need to hear that.
Also some obscure group covered a Lee Hazelwood album in its entirety. B)

Yes, one side of the Residents' George & James is a cover of Live At The Apollo - although a big Residents fan, I've never plucked up the courage/energy to buy this, although their version This Is A Man's World is a classic (probably on YouTube as it has a typically odd video to accompany it)
Audrey Wetherspoon - June 14, 2009 08:36 AM (GMT)
I have bought a Belbury Poly CD.

It hasn't arrived yet.
The thing about ICFQ -- the great thing, if I may so so -- is that it features a lot of music I've never heard of, but now want to.
As a result of this issue (which is the best yet) I want to hear virtually everything on the Ghost Box label, Mary Lee Kortes, the Dudes of Neptune, It's In the Trees, It's Coming, The Elgin Yarbles, Samuel Nilsson and several things reviewed by Matusek. What a result! You don't get that from Mojo.
Audrey Wetherspoon - June 18, 2009 09:32 AM (GMT)
My Belbury Poly CD has arrived.
I must admit, having been seduced by talk in the mag of the aesthetics and packaging -- and how it was better to buy the physical CD for that reason -- I was a disappointed in that aspect of it. Turns out the care and attention extends only so far as an inlay book, which is nice, admittedly, but other than that the case is nude, which makes it feel a bit like a promo CD, frankly. Including p&P it came to almost £13, so I must admit to making this face at first: <_<
To the music, then, where things improve dramatically. Jim Jupp's definition of Belbury as Disco Sci-Fi is spot on, so I won't try to improve upon it. Suffice to say that it's marvellously evocative: Clockwork Orange by Way of Goblin, with a bit of Wicker Man thrown in, and I've been playing it almost constantly since I got it, making this face: B)
I'll be going back to Ghost Box, though I think I'll investigate less expensive options next time round.
