Title: Hastings 'Jack In The Green' procession, 4 May 09
Description: My photos - world's best procession?

nigeyb - May 5, 2009 07:12 AM (GMT)
In Hastings, Sussex there were at least two groups who paraded a Jack in the Green until about 1889. The custom was revived in Hastings by Mad Jacks Morris Dancers in 1983.

This was our first time and it didn't disappoint. A brilliant, moving and exciting spectacle.

If you know of a better procession than this then I'd like to hear about it.

That's my old house (2002-2007) on the right, with the blue plaque for John Moore (the general, not the Mary Chain drummer) on it.

Jack-In-The-Green is wonderful - this year was the first I'd missed for a long time (stuck working in a shop for the afternoon). I put a lo-fi (made with a Fisher Price tape recorder) audio-collage cassette of it out on my label the other year - side B features more thrills from Hastings Bonfire Procession.

Definitely hoping to get back over for May Day 2010.
