I was accused yesterday evening of 'liking a prog rock band' as a result of my dragging a mate out see AMT. I suppose I have to confess my guilt, but offer in my defence that the hirsute Japanese veterans are well towards the Kraut end of the Prog spectrum. In any event a serious contrast from the 25 minute all action sets of the last few Mary Chain influenced bands I have been out to see. Tons of noodling, including accoustic and guest saxaphone noodling sections, all the hits and some gratutious guitar violence at the end (a little cliched of course but to be fair, it was the last night of their month long tour so presumably they didn't need it any more).
All young bands who profess to be in the 'drone' genre should be made to go and see the masters at work.
Toppen.

I used to like them but ever since the phrase "late Hawkwind" popped into my head during one show, I haven't bothered. They played here last week but I was on nights so couldn't go anyway.

I swapped with a friend the last cd of Acid Mothers Temple I owned for three bottles of Pepsi Max, and felt guilty at ripping him off so badly.

I think the bulk of the CDs of theirs I have heard have been unconscionable shit, and not anything I would ever consider playing at home (but in their defence, they need to pay the bills).
I can't easily explain it, but live I find them hypnotically mesmerising, the drummer and bass player (whilst quite clearly barking mad) are superb.
I will find a way to deal with my shame. I just hope drugs will be enough.

As a live experience, Circle gave me what I was hoping for from AMT tenfold. But apart from Telescope, not as fab on record either.

Is that the Finnish band of that name or another?

Yes, the very ones - widescreen viking trance-rock at its finest.

Some AMT albums are amazing - some are partly good - some are very mediocre. They release several a year, so there's always at least a couple of worthwhile AMT albums every year. I've seen them live around maybe 6 times, and the best of these performances are amongst the best gigs I've been to - and one of those was last year. I've seen both the most cynical jaded hipsters and the most casual music fans completely stunned and ecstatic at their gigs. You can quibble about their approach to releases and so on but I think they're one of the great miracles of rock music of the last decade.

I find Circle great live but patchy and disappointing on record.
