Been listening to some mid 70's Mac for the first time in a while.

The Fleetwood Mac - Rumours - Tusk trilogy is unimpeachable. People who don't understand this are like people who don't like Abba - unwelcome in my house. The blues shite and the eighties production horror either side don't appeal, though.
EAgas1 - March 9, 2009 02:12 PM (GMT)
I agree, late 1970's Fleetwood Mac are up there with the best, dont agree about Abba though :D

Fleetwood Mac are hideous and anyone who doesn;t understand this is most unwelcome in my rectory.

You nuts are insane!
Obviously I'm not welcome in three-legged-black-grey-hog's house, so I'll twirl 'round and head home!
Except for that extremely early ALBATROSS-era bluesy-rock Fleetwood Mac, before the ugly-americans, hippie-witch Stevie Nicks are her creepy husband joined, there is virtually NOTHING nice I can say about them! :grrr: Can Nicks even sing ANYTHING without sounding drowsy? She makes Anne Murray sound like a speed freak.
ABBA at least has a frothy sort of awkward pop-charm. "Ring Ring" is actually even a good song...
But Rhiannon??? Even THEY arent even sure how to pronounce it when they sing it! They pronounce it two different ways in the same song.
Tusk??? Yeah, that's always what I want to hear in a rock song. a marching band!
You break my heart! :cry2:

I'd hope not, what with the amount she was spending on quaaludes at the time.
Allegedly.

yeah... "allegedly."
Zoot Horn Polo - March 9, 2009 04:53 PM (GMT)
They've never written a bad song. From "Albatross" to "Everywhere" -- they're all brilliant.
Neal Cassady - March 9, 2009 05:00 PM (GMT)
Two good things about Fleetwood Mac.
1) Everytime i've been on holiday recently they seem to pipe Albatross through into the cabin just as we touch down. This always sounds nice and most, erm, sunny.
2) The Brits - comedy gold.
Thats is though, not bad in 40 odd years.
Stranger - March 10, 2009 01:48 AM (GMT)
Stevie doesn't sound drowsy singing here on 'That's Alright' here
:)
I always liked the song...it's got even more of a country feel here too :)

One of my Favourite Little Moments In Music is the drum break in the middle of the third verse of 'Everywhere'.
Very Sweet Video

Notice the little chimes when she says 'Magic.'

Yeah, but sticking a ridiculous drum solo in the middle of a Top Ten Hit is pretty radical, you must admit.
The only thing that doesn't send me about The Mac is Christine's voice :(
Vvillager - November 23, 2009 09:09 PM (GMT)
I've been listening to Then Play On recently and have to state for the record that this is definitely one of the Top Ten British albums of all time. It's kinda of a time, but unique enough to be timeless. Funny how you never really get any tracks from this album on any 'Best of...' compilations.
Actually, my CD version has 'Oh Well' on instead of the original 'Help Me Baby' which pisses me off no end. That apart, I love it to bits.

Stranger's musical voyage continues to entertain & appal me.
It's like a car crash on ice.

Judging by the samples, and the write up, this should be great! ^_^

Notes:
Darrell F.'s 1st gen cassettes made from Howie's master reels. Unfortunately the reels are no longer with us so these are the best copies left of Howie's recordings. This particular recording along with many other Eagles Auditorium shows broadcast on KOL-FM if circulating from Bill B.'s reels will definately either be sourced from Howie's masters or Darrell's 1st gens so these may or may not be an upgrade to existing Eagles broadcasts from this time period if can be traced back to Bill. The recording may switch from stereo to mono periodically since reception wasn't the greatest from where Howie lived at this time which was in the extreme southwest of Seattle over a hill. Through the years people have questioned whether these recordings are truely soundboard or audience recordings and the answer is they are a hybrid of both. The recording sounds great but this is bittersweet moment in the band's history since it was at this point Peter Green's eccentricities were taking over which would lead to him leaving band only 4 months later.
Here is some more background info on these recordings from Pat L.
"All were broadcast on KOL-FM on their program called "Great Nights at Eagles". It ran on Sunday evenings and the host was a UW professor named John Chamblis. He borrowed the reels (or had copies) from Mike Reed who had recorded them and was selling copies at the time and was hoping these KOL broadcasts would generate some interest in his venture.
The tapes were recorded on a reel at the soundboard. The input was two microphones hung over the stage, which accounts for the somewhat funky sound--not quite soundboard, but not quite audience."

The Encrusted Green - February 7, 2011 09:58 PM (GMT)
There was a thing on BBC4 about F Mac the other day. Fleetwood and mcVie never did anything. Old F Mac was Peter Green. New F Mac was Lindsey Buckingham and Stevie Nicks. F&M never wrote, never sang, looked like shit at all times. Just a couple of old white blues schleppers slipstreaming other people's talent. Am I wrong?
Vvillager - February 7, 2011 10:08 PM (GMT)
I watched this and have to disagree - a bit anyway. They were the rhythm section so they did about as much as any other rhythm section in most bands. McVie could have been anyone but some of Fleetwood's drumming stood out.
Whatever, I thought that they were pretty fascinating to watch. They've lived through some great times and had the pleasure (for the most part) of sharing lives and the stage with the likes of Green, Buckingham, Nicks, and Danny Kirwan. For all that, I don't think that they tried to get high and mighty. They spoke about other bands like the Grateful Dead and The Eagles with due reverence.
The bit that I liked best was when they were sat with Jeremy Spenser talking old times. I presume that Spenser didn't do much when he left the band, but no-one pulled rank and they came across as three mates. McVie looks a bit the worse for the drink and drugs, but fair play to them. They praised Peter Green to the full, not so much about his guitar playing, but his generosity. He gave them the band name because he wanted it to be their band.
The Encrusted Green - February 7, 2011 10:11 PM (GMT)
agree with all that. interesting guys, nice enough. but amazing that they should have given their names to a band and been its only constants, and made stupid wad, without ever being any cop at all.

When they were a hit machine in the late 70s their music was everywhere. You literally could not get away with. Overexposure led to distaste and I still can't get that taste out of my mouth.
Having said that, I do enjoy much of the Bob Welch period.
If you change your mind, let me know and I'll come over. :)

hmm, for the second time since my abrupt departure I have to say, wait a f***ing minute...
their whole chugging, drum slightly out of step with the bass sound is part of what MADE Fleetwood Mac.
Without the 70's enormous success (Rumours is one of the biggest selling albums ever, as I'm sure you know), they'd be remembered as a very good blues band / in the legendary 'lost soul' stakes (sort of, as Peter Green has come back from being a lost soul).
As it is, songs like Gypsy, You Make Loving Fun, Don't Stop are powered along on FM radio regularly, propelled by that rhythm section.
OK excuse the hyperbole, but to say they were crap and just along for the ride (Mick F managed them in the late 70's / early 80's too, and the sexual musical chairs involving all of them sparked most of the writing of "Rumours" too) is going a tad too far....
delmore - February 8, 2011 03:30 AM (GMT)
I'm with Stranger on this one - no band is good without a grooving rhythm sections.
Betcha if you looked, many a great tune was written only because the writers had a happening and sensitive drummer and bass player to put life into it, maybe who taught pulse and rhythm to the writer in the first place.
Rhythm is prior in Being to melody. Thinking beings were dancing before they learned to sing.
Good for you for raising the question though, Mr. Green. :)

IIRC, the band was called "Peter Green's Fleetwood Mac feat. Jeremy Spencer" in the early days, which covers all band members.

This leaves out Christine McVie and, especially, Danny Kirwan a bit too much for my liking. Old Fleetwood Mac became soooo much better when Kirwan joined.
Anyway, McVie/Fleetwood apparently had the talent to find talent when they needed it.
Fritter - February 8, 2011 11:13 AM (GMT)
I think Mick Fleetwood is a brilliant drummer, or at least perfect for the band, he puts just the tiniest fill in at just the right moment that really makes you go "What?!" - like that bit in the middle of the third verse of Everywhere. It would get really boring if every band had a Keith Moon or a Neil Peart at the traps.

Kirwan deffo brought some good tunes to the table. I bought his first solo album, though, and I thought it was a bit of a lemon. And that's supposed to be the best one of them.
