Title: John Cooper Clarke
Description: Stand up Comic or Punk Poet
Hex En hour - March 4, 2009 05:41 PM (GMT)
Saw yer man last week in Sheffield with my eldest daughter who was brought up on such like, Now ms Hex en Hour loved him to bits and nearly wet her self laughing but I have to confess the lack of poetry was a bit of a disappointment, perhaps half a dozen in the total value for money hour and three quarters set. The last time I saw him was a while ago, in Sligo at the Bon Cher in Ireland perhaps 10 years ago, and it was total poetry. When did this transition take place?
SteveHamilton - March 4, 2009 05:51 PM (GMT)
Not sure when exactly but I saw JCC at Glastonbury about 3 or 4 years ago and like you was a bit disappointed. His jokes weren't even that funny. :(
Having said that, he's coming to Bath end of this month and I' going.

I think living in Colchester reduced the poetry content!
I saw him return to gigging maybe 10 or so years ago with very little new material but with great love from the audience.
Seen him only as a Fall support act since, though he sold out two nights in Manchester recently.

No. With respect, you are all wrong. When JCC does the gags - which he points out are all available on his website - tis not just comedy gold, tis comedy platinum. Hooray for John!

On Tom Jones
Man says to Doctor: I can't sleep. Everytime I lay on my left I hear 'The Green Green Grass of Home,' and when I lay on my right, I hear 'Delilah.'
Doctor: I'm afraid you have a case of Tom Jones Fever.
Man: Tom Jones Fever? Is that common?
Doctor: Well, It's not unusual.........

The entrance fee is worth it for that joke alone.

I've never seen him. Is he better than Ted Chippington?
I've got the Ted Chippington box set (NATCH!).
Genius!

Another gem:
On hotels in Burnley
I asked for a suite with a view. They gave me a polo mint.

I just laughed scarily loudly.
A bloke goes for the job of cook on a ship. The geezer who is interviewing asks “Can you fry eggs”. “Can I fry eggs! I've worked in some of the top hotels in England“ replies the bloke...
“Give me half a dozen”. So he's given six eggs which he starts to juggle with.
After a minute of brilliant juggling, he throws the eggs one-by-one over his shoulder towards the frying pan which is behind him. Each egg hits the side of the pan, cracks open and the shell falls into the bin below and the eggs slide unbroken into the frying pan. “That's amazing” says the interviewer “but it must have been a fluke”. “A fluke! Give me a dozen“ says the bloke. He then proceeds to do even more elaborate juggling and repeat the finale so there's now eighteen unbroken eggs sizzling in the frying pan.
“Well then do I get the job?”
“No, you piss about too much!!”
Let's face it, the man's a genius.

Always had a lot of time for JCC.
Responsible for my favourite response to a heckler ever...."I can't hear you mate, yer mouth's full of shit!" :applaud:
Sven Hassel Schmuck - March 11, 2009 11:47 PM (GMT)
I'm seeing him tomorrow in Burnley
Will report back here.

One of my favourite Cooper Clarke gags is the one about the Burnley couple on their honeymoon night. The bride confesses to her new husband that she's still a virgin. The lad phones his Dad in a panic. On hearing the news his Dad advises him to dump her, ''If she's not good enough for her family then she's not good enough for ours !''

can i just say, that i have never said this b4 because i dont want to hurt jcc's feelings, incase he somehow stumbles across this site, this thread, and this post, that i dont find him funny, not even a tiny little bit, and everytime he is onstage, which seems to be often, i cringe from head to toe with embarrasment at how bad the jokes are.

A JCC joke from many years ago…
A man goes into a clothes shop and says to the shopkeeper “You got any camouflage jackets?”
The shopkeeper replies “Yeah, but I can’t find ‘em.”

Lets hope he does not keep in touch with Marc Riley, who told me "He's alright but he would do well to get some new gags. Doing the same set since the 70s".
I remember the Wife (shes dug the Fall shows she has seen) turning round and saying to me "Is this guy ment to be funny".
Me? Hmmm... I see it as dated comedy. Chuckle at bits. No belly laughs.

Johnny Clarke I love the bloke very talented but its a crying shame that he has been peddling the same set for a long long time, I have seen him a few times and his shows tend to be an un anounced first half feature usually two singers and then JCC for the second half,He's a legend but is stretching the loyalty thing a bit in my opinion.
"That bubble writing everyone used to do in the 70's when you put a letter L and a letter I together it used to look like a letter U, I used to feel sorry for that Clint Eastwood"
Faust Banana - July 20, 2009 10:04 AM (GMT)
I saw him about four years ago and he did Chickentown. Good to see live, but new material wouldn't have gone amiss. There were also some cringeworthy jokes abound.
On a side note, I helped booked his latest tour.

Apologies if you have already noticed this:
http://www.bbc.co.uk/programmes/b00b4wtlOnline until Sunday evening.
Paul Morley traces the life and works of Manchester punk poet John Cooper Clarke.
Paul looks back at the punk movement in the mid 1970s, its DIY ethic and popular appeal and how Cooper Clarke, as the poet of the people, fit into the scene.
Through exclusive new interviews with Cooper Clarke, Paul delves into the most significant moments of his life and career, from his first job as a lab technician at Salford University to touring with some of the world's most famous punk bands, his domestic partnership and shared heroin addiction with Nico, the use of one of his songs in The Sopranos, his signing to the same label as Bob Dylan and his appearance in a Sugar Puffs advert.
Cooper Clarke has continued to tour and write new work for 30 years and despite being exasperated by the 1980s' flamboyant reaction to punk's DIY ethic, his influence today should not be underestimated. Jarvis Cocker, Noel Gallagher, Alex Turner of the Arctic Monkeys, Lily Allen and Kate Nash have all cited Clarke as an influence, as his distinctive style continues to pervade popular music.
Contributors include Mark E Smith, Pete Shelly, Kate Nash, Phill Jupitus and Clarke himself.
An All Out production for BBC Radio 4.
