Title: Favourite Fall Support Acts: Part 2 (1983 - now)
Description: Sonic Youth to Resist

elvischomsky - March 4, 2009 01:23 PM (GMT)
Which do you really wish you'd seen?

Or which did you see and want to show-off about?

And which ones did you see and wish you hadn't?

SteveHamilton - March 4, 2009 01:33 PM (GMT)
Where's Safi? :o

Oh fuck and bother. Sorry.

Neal Cassady - March 4, 2009 02:01 PM (GMT)
Wolfgang Press were always a fave band of mine, so seeing them live was graet at the time. As for Safi... one of the better support acts in my opinion. Yes, really.

Safy Sniper would've been my first vote! Seriously.
And Michael Wookey would've been my second.

I voted for:

Sonic Youth
The Smiths
Ted Chippington
Gorkis Zygotic Mynci (never heard them, but apparently great)
Bobbie Peru.

Gene Vincents Amphetamine Breath - March 4, 2009 10:58 PM (GMT)
I voted for three but left two off in protest at the omission of Gindrinker (and boy do I wish I'd not seen the bloody awful Smiths, not that I can recall a single thing about them that night).

fieryjack17 - March 4, 2009 11:36 PM (GMT)
Walking Seeds

Völlig Totall - March 5, 2009 12:35 AM (GMT)
The Smiths

Sonic Youth, i have seen them twice, but not in their prime.

The others either i don't know or don't care about. :P

rainmaster - March 5, 2009 12:42 AM (GMT)
Smiths, Mondays, erm, Kukl, erm...

Aubrey The Cat - March 5, 2009 09:02 AM (GMT)
I'd forgotten about ATV - was that at Woolwich? And they had a shaven headed guitarist who played for another group on the same night, whose name I forget - shock headed peters?

And who was the group with a woman singing at the Astoria on a hot night, who said that she was "Glowing like a pig?"

Dice Man - March 5, 2009 09:14 AM (GMT)
Oh, oh, that's tough.

Sonic Youth
Khmer Rouge
Scraping Foetus Of The Wheel
The Jeffrey Lee Pierce Quartet and of course
Gallon Drunk.

Where's Benny Profane? :devil2:

In the interests of pedantry, it's worth pointing out that Selfish Cunt, as listed above, have never actually supported The Fall. They were listed to appear at the Camden Barfly gigs in 2003?(4?) but were banned from the Barfly chain, I believe for vandalisng Snow Patrol's gear.

In their place we were treated to a then-unknown East London group called Hot Chip, who have of course since gone on to fame and fortune.

*bump*

Lucy Cage - October 13, 2009 09:47 PM (GMT)
Sonic Youth
Swans
Wolfgang Press
Pulp
Gallon Drunk

ATV was at Woolwich: my first Fall gig and something of a disappointment because Karl Burns had just been sacked and had been temporarily replaced by Paul Hanley (good in his way but not up to powering a whole set of Leckie-era material solo) AND Steve Hanley was off on paternity leave (replaced by Simon Rogers - good in his way but, along with the rest of us, very definitely not Steve Hanley).

Would've voted for Luxuria but it wouldn't let me.

There was a hairy bloke who played in ATV and Shock Headed Peters in the late 80s I think. I would have voted for ATV but it wouldn't let me. I think I can rule out the Nightingales after seeing them in Leeds.

Retired, hopefully.

I haven't seen any of the bands on this list support The Fall. Of the ones I've seen, the only ones I liked were Cincinnati's own BPA (pretty good) and Cleveland's The Vivians (all right). The rest either sucked (Magnapop, some horrible faux hardcore Cleveland band with the words "black history" in their name, and especially Safi) or I didn't catch their sets.

mixstreams - October 15, 2009 12:13 PM (GMT)
i am struggling to recall any! seen the fall a good ten times or so, the supports i seem to have erased from my memory. which is probably for the best.

Grotesque peasant - October 19, 2009 02:01 PM (GMT)
Should we vote for the band that was best on the night or who is the best in general.

eg I saw the Smiths supporting the Fall at the Electric Ballroom in 1983 but can't remember a thing about them, not being famiiar with their material at the time they obviously didn't make much of an impression on the night. But I grew to love them subsequently.

Of the ones listed that I witnessed, I voted for Beloved as the best. and Resist were most definitely the worst, having to endure them 5-6 times was the worst memory of that tour

Sven Hassel Schmuck - December 14, 2009 09:43 PM (GMT)
Gallon Drunk were a great live band. Never saw them supporting the Fall but as a support act for many others :)

Granny On Bongos - December 15, 2009 12:46 AM (GMT)
Suede were very good the time I saw them support The Fall.

chachacha - December 15, 2009 03:30 AM (GMT)
Foil were memorable

Starsky-Tandoori - December 16, 2009 01:10 PM (GMT)
I know it seems really crass, but I'm usually in the bar or the pub next door while the support is on ... so goodness knows what talent I've missed over the years ... still, some great pubs though

pkelly - October 27, 2010 02:37 AM (GMT)
Gotta be "The Real Wild West" at the TV Club, Dublin, 1984. The only ones I can remember.

anonyarena - December 14, 2010 10:42 PM (GMT)
It's gotta be Alternative TV for me.

duckpin236 - December 14, 2010 10:51 PM (GMT)

ryaneno - December 14, 2010 11:07 PM (GMT)
