Title: Christmas Records
Description: Bah humbug etc etc

elvischomsky - December 4, 2008 06:49 PM (GMT)
I went shopping today and heard my first Christmas record in a shop of the year; Shaky's Merry Christmas Everyone.
Amazing!
I hate Christmas, but I love Christmas records.
In fact, I love them so much I have a special file of them on my iTunes and play them all year round.

Anyway I'm rambling, I've chosen my 40 favourites above.
I think you'll all agree with my excellent selections, but feel free to tell us about some of your more so-so selections.

PS The following were not included in the poll, partly as they're too obvious, but mainly for reasons of space: A Christmas Gift For You From Phil Spector (it's unquestionably amazing, but an album); and Christmastide, No Xmas For John Quays, (We Wish You) A Protein Christmas and Xmas With Simon (cause everyone would automatically choose them, and it'd be silly).

This poll sucks shit through a straw and I for one want nothing to do with it.
Good day to you, sir!

That song is GREAT

Cappuccino and a slice of quiche - December 4, 2008 08:13 PM (GMT)

Every song on Christmas 1979 by Billy Childish & the Musicians of the British Empire pisses over every song on this list and that is a FACT!

That song is GREAT

I deliberately have never bought or downloaded it so I only come across it once or twice a year on the radio. That way it keeps being special.

My email's not working right now. Could be down for some time. No need to bother.

SonofAlways - December 4, 2008 08:38 PM (GMT)
There's a reggae version of "Silent Night" by Trinity that is pure joy, not a dirge like other versions of the song.

And Andy Williams singing "Ave Maria."

But that Low song might be my favorite:

"By the time we got to Oslo/the snow was gone/the beds were small/we felt so young/it was just like Christmas."

That gives me chills it so good. :)

Point of order: "It was just LIKE Christmas..."
ie it wasn't actually Christmas.
Sorry, disqualified.

The best Christmas songs aren't included in this poll.
This has already been established...

It would have been if EC hadn't been so blinkered about my powerpoint presentation.

DJAsh - December 4, 2008 09:15 PM (GMT)
Was Bowie going through rehab when he did that thing with Bing?

Mere Pseud. - December 4, 2008 09:21 PM (GMT)
This poll doesn't let me vote anything between 1 and 5 choices, so here they are anyway:

Fairytale of New York (of course)

The rest are all from the first half of the 70s. Probably mainly because Christmas meant far more to me in those days than in adulthood:
John & Yoko
Greg Lake
Slade
Wizzard

If something other than that Waitresses song was included from the Ze Christmas album it most likely would have been among my picks.

No.

Bing was, though.

Fritter - December 5, 2008 12:19 AM (GMT)
I too have a soft spot for The Waitresses song. But I also like the bit in Greg Lake's I Believe In Father Christmas, when it all goes bonkers towards the end.

Völlig Totall - December 5, 2008 12:20 AM (GMT)
Will Xmas songs by the Fall have their own poll? If not, i vote for Christmas with Simon.
Of the groups in the list, i pick the Kinks, even if i've never heard that song.
