Title: Ear Wax Solvent

JonN - November 28, 2008 01:44 AM (GMT)
According to one of the MES biogs, I think it was the Simon Ford book, MES got his ears syringed after the Crooks/Hanley lineup quit and "they said I had enough earwax for three 70-year-old men". He also said he now realised he hadn't been able to hear the band properly on stage.

Which is quite sad as one of the reasons for all the MES.vs.Band fighting of the previous 2-3 years was that he wasn't happy with the sound he was hearing on stage. But he wasn't hearing what they were actually doing.

So should he get regularly cleaned out, to prevent this ever happening again?

I got a vague idea I may have raised this subject on here years ago, though I don't think I did it as a poll. But it needs saying. Again.

I'm sure there are various other areas that could use a good scraping as well. Start with the ears, it's business after all.

I guess the ear wax wasn't noticeable through all the ear hair. I think Mrs Smith should have a role here in keeping Mr Smith presentable and able to function in public. Disclaimer: I am neither a medical person nor a counselor and the above are the postulations of one who finds himself in possession of a keyboard and and the will to use same.

If trying to remove earwax, beware the dreaded cotton buds - they push the wax even deeper, and prolong/ exasperate the deafness.

I find the tops off those Bic pens do the trick... ;)

What lovely conversations we have here... :o

As far as I know, they've always sounded out of tune. On every album. Or is that just me?

Maybe if he did this, he might hear well enough to get the band sounding more professional, and follow the lead of outfits such as U2.

Yes, or even possibly Coldplay, or the much lamented Simply Red! :o

I also think that if he'd give up smoking and drinking, he might eventually develop into a really mature Artist, just like Tom Waits or Lou Reed. :o

I wonder if he's ever tried "ear candling"?

That works - not tried it, it's rather elaborate, but the principle is in there, and I say this as a scientist.
Warm olive oil will do the same trick, but more simply.

I've heard form fairly reliable sources that ear-candling is a bad idea, another symptom of contemporary fears about unclean bodies...there's more feces on your doorknobs than on feces, you know...

On the other hand, maybe it would explain a lot of poorly mixed albums.

Hello JonN

Nice to see you posting again.

Hope you are feeling much better

I'd never heard this one about MES. Why does it not surprise me though?

btw,
Ear Candling is an elaborate hoax; a scam on the gullible, as is it's offshoot "butt candling". It's physically impossible, medically impossible, and the supposed results are actually from a misdirection trick (the presentation of carbon residue from the burning of parrafin).

he could sell it on ebay.
People could make candles or little sculptures with it.

Warm olive oil yes, but I'm afraid you're wrong about the principle being 'there' with ear-candling:
