Best group, but only an average band.

Human: Do you like music, God?
God: Yes. I usually check out bandspace.com to discover new bands.
Human: Thanks for the tip, God!
God: Oh don't mention it.
Human: I won't, trust me.
God: Trust you? Why not?
Human: What is your favourite group?
God: My favorite group is Creed.
Human: I never heard them. Are they a rock group?
God: Do you know anyone who has ever heard them? As far as I know they are.
Human: What about the Fall?
God: I have never been asked that before.
Human: The Fall are the best group that the world has ever seen.
God: Thanks for the info.

Residents
Beefy
Just my opinion, like. At least I didn't choose Shed 7 or Oasis.
Cappuccino and a slice of quiche - November 10, 2008 06:30 PM (GMT)
The way I look at it is: while the quality control isn't as strong as it was from 77-82, if you consider any artist you care to mention and then stack up how much good stuff they did (by their own criteria, irrespective of who they are) vs how much good stuff The Fall have produced - well The Fall win hands down. QED.
Gene Vincents Amphetamine Breath - November 10, 2008 07:13 PM (GMT)
Not that I personally would Cappo (they leave me cold) but I reckon you could say "King Crimson win hands down" by those very criteria.
Grog - November 11, 2008 01:01 PM (GMT)
No doubt in my mind at all.
I've been worrying some friends lately by telling them that I've lost any last vestige of a critical faculty where the Fall are concerned. All their albums are great and every gig is fantastic. I know that it doesn't make sense, but I can't see it any other way. I don't feel like that about any other group, band or artist. Not Dylan, not even Beefheart and I don't even mind 'Bluejeans and Moonbeams'.
The Fall are the greatest musical act of all time!!!

One of the enduring memories of the printed word of my youth was the legend found written on fireworks
"Light fuse retire quickly"
I would prefer not to goad ElvisChomsky because I can't win a dispute with him and don't want him stirred up....let's just leave him to enjoy Enya and the Percy Faith Strings and John Tesh and we'll tiptop around him. That's what I hope to do.
elvischomsky - November 11, 2008 02:02 PM (GMT)
Sorry. It just dawned on me this morning that everyone else had been right all along; it's a racket, and that funny-looking chap can't sing for toffee.
duckpin236 - November 11, 2008 02:12 PM (GMT)
Me? Don't even like music anymore....noise with rhythm? What's the deal with that? I like the rustling of leaves and am hoping for an electrical storm.
nigeyb - November 11, 2008 02:21 PM (GMT)
They're OK I suppose. ;)
I haven't voted yet - the question is to difficult. :P
Faust Banana - November 11, 2008 08:52 PM (GMT)
They're certainly my favourite group. Nothing else matters to me past that opinion.

No, coz there is no such thing.
Daggerfall96 - November 18, 2008 12:26 PM (GMT)
Kinda 2 questions aint it. Definitely best group I'm aware the world has ever seen. As a rabid fan more of the Hanley/Scanlon period, I'm not so sure it is always present tense. But partly that's because I don't have a band-following mindset anymore. I wanna hear more music as i get older, regardless of who by, what category, how popular or where/when produced.
But in my experience the Fall have been the group that has never sold out, got boring, been outmoded, got lazy or too predictable or unreliable, or that i wished to ignore.
And they STILL have the ability to make everything else seem a little trivial and unexciting.
The best, then.

Is that Creed?
What is the last song they wrote?
And was it about Jesus or surfing?

What's the difference between Paul Weller's audience and The Fall's?
PW's audience are generally 40+, balding and mortgaged and deliriously happy to be in the company of likeminded fans. Lots of hugging, raucous singalongs, tears when he plays a Jam song etc. The audience for The Fall may look similiar to a PW audience but the Fall audience is slightly embarrassed about being in the same room together and there is a tendency to shun each other.
That's why they are the greatest group.

Surely any antropologist worth his salt knows that the typical Fall audience is in fact made up predominantly of 18 year-old miners.
