Title: Most annoying press cliches about The Fall/MES
Description: Rarely different, always the same...
elvischomsky - October 29, 2008 11:31 PM (GMT)
Everything written about The Fall or MES - be it live or album reviews, profiles or interviews - now by law has to contain references to at least three of these cliches above.
Which FIVE would you most like to see banned?
And what are the others that make you come over all cantankerous and curmudgeonly?
Völlig Totall - October 29, 2008 11:56 PM (GMT)
“Always different, always the same”
Baffling/incomprehensible lyrics
Drink/Drunk
Knob-twiddling, onstage
Mark E Smith is The Fall
It was a difficult choice and it's very likely that 1hr. earlier or later i would have chosen differently.
BUT: cantankerous and curmudgeon are beautiful words and sound charming to my ears.
I'd love to be called that myself all the time. ^_^

Always Different ...
Baffling Lyrics
Curmudgeonly
Grumpiest ...
Only band constant ...
I know 27th album is an option, but I would've voted for "Comic" Exaggeration of Album Numbers - eg. 527th Album if it had been there
Chief Elf Norman - October 30, 2008 09:02 AM (GMT)
Always different always the same. I think they are getting a bit samey.
twinz2z - October 30, 2008 03:49 PM (GMT)
You missed out Repetition, though admittedly that's usually the slightly more in depth article that reaches that point.

Repetition.
Happy now?
Fritter - November 1, 2008 03:50 PM (GMT)
The er...repetition of "The Wonderful And Frightening World Of..." was the only thing that marred the Fallen for me, but then again, only Allah creates perfection, and he's hardly likely to bother writing a book about The Fall is he?

Baffling/incomprehensible lyrics.
Best album since.
Brix years.
Drink/Drunk.
Misanthrope.
They're all false or exaggerrated.

sort of,
you could have said,
'I was only including the cliche's that appear in short reviews by piss-poor journalist's. As you rightly point out there is another kind of Fall article thats usually more in depth and tries to avoid the obvious cliche's, but nevertheless often runs to using its own little collection of what might be termed 'Pseud's cliche's, and it is in this category that repetition belong's'
But you didnt.
Nev mind.
Sven Hassel Schmuck - November 1, 2008 05:49 PM (GMT)
Most of what is written about the band is total cliche. But most music journalism in general is lazy and generic.
Drjohnrock - November 1, 2008 08:01 PM (GMT)
A very comprehensive list indeed. You did leave one out though, and it's the one that drives me up the wall the most: post punk. or post-punk. or postpunk. whatever. It's a sorry music journo cliche in general, but The Fall seem to get more than their fair share of it. May I never (1) be in the company of a music writer using that cliche while (2) being in possession of a loaded gun.

The Encrusted Green - November 3, 2008 09:50 PM (GMT)
good selection
other hack drag 'n' drop classics:
- reference to latest missus and her presence in band
- sackings, unaccountable tallies of members/line-ups
- details of what and how much drunk during interview
- insistance on eey-oop transcription of what said, as if manc accent is quaint, strange thing
- saying that last-but-one album was nadir, last one was improvement and current one is best since some random choice of previous reasonable album
- wheedling preamble in which hack describes fear of getting lit tab in face
- something about marc riley

I knocked-out a 500ish word review of Sunday's Hove gig for a local mag this afternoon, prior to reading this thread.
Despite being very conscious of Fall cliches, I still managed to mention the knob-twiddling, MES as one constant member, and Eleni relationship...
Hey-ho...
lavendercat06 - November 4, 2008 09:12 PM (GMT)
i dont know cos i never read em.
SonofAlways - November 5, 2008 04:51 PM (GMT)
The thing is, recently not only are the questions and the interstitial writing full of cliches, but so are MES's answers.
twinz2z - November 5, 2008 07:36 PM (GMT)
And some of the poster's on the Fall website, their post's are repeated cliche's.
Do you think it's a conspiracy, is everybody trying to give me a groundhog day?
chachacha - November 6, 2008 02:07 AM (GMT)
My fave non-cliche is Peel's: you may not like it, but its what you need" or sth like that?
New Profile Razor Unit - November 6, 2008 04:40 PM (GMT)
Always a pleasure to introduce people to
The Fall Press kit in threads like these.

Not only an essential instrument for every professional journalist, but an amusing pastime for all the family too. :applaud:
Alas, i doubt we'll ever have the pleasure to hear MES defined as a "Verongelukt Verlopen Kroegtijger", whatever that means... :(
Smudger - November 8, 2008 08:59 AM (GMT)
He likes a drink.
Good Luck to him and to millions of others who go to work , pay bills and then like to spend time getting drunk.
This man has made his own luck through his immense talent for so many years that he should get keys to Bargain Booze and Drugs.
Starting a band as a teen and still doing it.
He hails from Prestwich. so what?
So do a lot of other people from Prestwich.

Baffling / incomprehensible lyrics
Cantankerous
Curmudgeonly
"Grumpiest man in pop"
Misanthrope
And "Post Punk", indeed. I love the music, but can't stand the word any longer.
