Title: The Dave Bush Years
Description: Much Under-rated Fall Bloke

elvischomsky - October 23, 2008 01:27 AM (GMT)
Choose one.
I fink Dave was the best thing to happen to the Fall since, well probably Brix, really.
Rescused the group.
Never gets his credit.
Let's make amends.

Some might say this poll was Fall-related.
Think about it.
I don't.
x

PS Maybe the Mods can move this poll...

EDIT: Aren't the Moderators amazing!

Never gets his credit.

The early 90s are possibly my least favourite Fall-zeit.
Code:Selfish and the Info Scam are great records, tho. :applaud:
Info maybe has the edge over Code, but given the few credits in songwriting Dave Bush gets, my vote goes to the latter on the strength of Birmingham.

wauwauwauwauwauwauwauwauwauwauwauwau...

The Dave Bush contributions were particularly pleasing on Code Selfish, and especially Free Range. After that, the electronics became a little too much, until MES put a stop to it when recording Cerebral Caustic - much of Bush's input was removed at this point.

On Shiftwork, much of the new sound was marred by Kenny Brady and his fecking violin. Might start a similar poll to see how much people hate the fiddle in Fall songs...

I still speak up for "Code: Selfish" when called upon to do so. yes, it's 2 tracks too long (and I can even tell you which two tracks) but that's the early 90's for you; everyone's albums were too long once CDs took hold. Wasn't until this decade that people began to get back to realistic album lengths.

Yeah, heavy random electronics suited The Fall and I tend to find Bush's work dates better than Julia Nagle's more predominant stylings some of which now sound positively quaint. Such is technology.

The fact remains that The Fall have been vastly better in the 00's than in the 90's. Do I sense a fresh poll?

Kenny Brady and his fecking violin

I love this... makes them sound like ELO. Always a good thing.
Shift-Work remains one of my face Fall LP's.
Info one of my least favs.
Go figure!

Period with it's lows - but certainly also highs. Most of my favorite songs of the era has Bush' mark all over them...

Infotainment for me.
Then:

Code:Selfish
Middle Class Revolt
Shift-Work
Cerebral Caustic

Not my favourite period by some way, and listening to the Aberdeen recording I reckon it's because Fall recordings are at their best when they're most like bootlegs, when they sound like a band in a garage - those sounds Bush added just muddied things up for me, rather than the distinct solo sounds of the other keybaordists.

I do like 'well-crafted' music, but it doesn't suit The Fall.

1. Shift-Work
2. MCR
3. CC
4. TIS
5. C:S

Not the best but also not the least good Fall period. Dave Bush surely wasn't my favourite Fall keyboardist, however it would be more fitting to blame MES than him on a few below par songs.

I didn't realise he'd been on Shiftwork, so I voted for Infotainment Scan, just looked and he had but it wasn't as apparent as on IS to me

Yus. I fink TIS is Dave's masterwork.

Dave's mistake was to smile at the audience just before the gig started.

How did he "rescue" The Fall?
How do we know he's "top notch"?

Code:Selfish. -_-

I've asked this question before, but never got an answer: why do some people refer to TIS as The Infotainment SCAM???

probably for the same reason they refer to Shift-Work as Shit-Work <_<

LocoMac - October 23, 2008 09:04 PM (GMT)
He really invigorated the live shows, but knew when to hold back on tunes like Prinz and Deadbeat, I was sad about him not being in the band, it took two keyboards to replace him initially, Karl & Julia, and even then, two of them together were less than him, much preferred 1 on keyboards + 2 on drums to the other way around

Would have said Code: Selfish last year, say Shift-Work now. One of the greats, really. Like Kenny Brady's input as well. Put Mr P on The 27 Points on or some boot from that time, you'll hear that it works.

:)

Because that's what it says on the first 500 copies of the ALBUM!!!

I never know which it's meant to be. I'm just grateful I've never had to write it down (when you say it you can kind of mumble).

Cleanville Tziabatz - October 24, 2008 10:19 AM (GMT)
Dave Bush ruined The Fall for an entire generation.

Daggerfall96 - October 24, 2008 09:32 PM (GMT)
Infotainment Scan. Bush maybe lost a few fans who didnt fancy hearing The Mighty Fall in party mode, but there y'go.
Special mention though, to "Two Face" on C:S, which has the most thrilling keys sound ever caught on a FALL album. And thus, any album.
