Brilliantly fiendish quiz - I'm flummoxed...

Well I know the Motors and Althea and Donna were no. 1 and no. 2 respectively.... so is that what makes Holidays in the Sun the odd one out?
No, hang on - I've got it. The Motors and the Pistols were on Virgin while Uptown Top Ranking was the only one released on Lightning Records. Ding!

Oh, for fuck's sake. I can see I'm going to have to explain this.
You were right -- it is a 1977 Festive Fifty question. The top three for that year, as I never tire of explaining to astonished people, consisted of The Motors (twice!) and Althea & Donna.
The Sex Pistols' "Holiday In The Sun" is therefore the odd one out.
Award yourself seventeen and a half points.

I can still vividly recall Peel unveiling Dancing the Night Away as number 1. All the obvious candidates had come and gone and I was genuinely agog at what it could possibly be. He then proceeded to play the extended 12" version (which was a conceptual novelty in those days) and for the first minute I simply couldn't think what it was.
And when the penny dropped, I just thought "you've got to be kidding!"
Mind you, I see from this:
http://www.rocklistmusic.co.uk/festive50lists.htmthat in 1987 Big Rock Candy Mountain by the Motorcycle Boy (Jesus!) reached #22 which warrants a steward's enquiry at the very least.

10. The 1972 Todd Rundgren album must be "Something/Anything?". It includes "Messin' With The Kid" as part of a medley. The Saints later also had a song with that title. Maybe some confusion with the credits?

Brilliant. Just to say Number 1 is driving me quietly insane.
8: Gillan-era Black Sabbath inspired the Stonehenge incident in Spinal Tap, their version was too big to get into an of the venues doors...didn't the Beatles perform in front of Stonehenge in Magical Mystery Tour? (never seen it, but somehow...)

Well Tap and Sabbath were. I took a punt on The Quarrymen but I've checked since posting and realised I got it wrong.
Not a name-change question, then?
