Title: How many more albums has MES got left in 'im?
Description: Are The Fall immortal?

Given the apparent resurgence in appreciation for The Gruppe instilled by Imperial Wax Solvent, a little voice within me wonders how much longer MES can continue working at this rate.
I'd love to find meself marvelling at a newly released lyrical subtlety from MES ten years hence, but will it happen?
Meself, I'd vote choice 5 just for the hell of it.
I'm also pathetically trying to make a milestone out of my 1000th post.
Go!

I wouldn't like to say. I hope they do go on forever but sometimes, what with the history of the band and the [supposed] lifestyle of MES himself, I often wonder whether they will make it into next week.

Aging well, much better than most "pop" musicians such as the R Stones, the Who and other farewell-comeback masters.

Something about the MES/Fall aesthetic from the get go that makes them unique; ie, they are old souls, they don't have to be youthful to do what they do best, they don't seem ridiculous after 20 years, they've never tried to deliver a rock spectacle for only twentysomethings, etc

Yes, but the history of the band and MES' lifestyle suggest another 10 years or so is quite feasable!

{Albeit a variety of bands... :whistle: }

EDIT: This should follow steve Albini's post - sorry !

I would say that as long as Mr Smith's health holds out, recordings will be forthcoming.

i guess as long as mes can manage to get up and outa bed he will keep going............the intresting thing is who with..........in the band i mean

He will (hopefully) continue to make records as long as he can find someone to finance the costs of the sessions. It seems to me that this is his biggest obstacle at the moment, given the collapse of the record industry.

What about the 'Walking Corpse' Keith Richards, as long as he can keep going - there again I don't know how true those blood transfusions were? (Vampires)

This will not be an obstacle. The Consortium have it covered.

This is what he does. Period.

It's also how he makes his living.

There is no retirement plan.

We'll get an album every year or so, unless the whiskey gets him first.

The real question is: Will he ever make a shit album. And I don't mean seminal or Winner which are decent albums, I mean actual shit.

My guess is that's impossible because the work is too authentic and too ingrained in who he is.

No U2 style sell outs, no plays for top o' the pops.

Till he drops down dead would be my guess, anyway why the fuck shouldn't he, the mans only scratched the surface

Surplus Johnny - September 17, 2008 07:07 PM (GMT)
I reckon this speck of dust we all call "home" has about 5 years left at most.

Another 2-3 albums then.

Neal Cassady - September 17, 2008 08:37 PM (GMT)
Well, I would like to think he can knock out another good ten albums, which I guess will put him around retirement.

Then he can buy an apartment in Blackpool (overlooking the sea) and while away his days drinking halves in back street pubs whilst being grumpy to the various hen and stag parties. :)

I thought hard, but don't know what to answer, except to say, I love The Fall.
:ohdear:

5 or more, not counting the infinate compilation albums

It is often the case when trying to predict the future that the past can provide us with a reliable guide. That is to say, The Fall have been remarkably consistent over the past 30-odd years, in spite of many events and upheavals that may have seen many a lesser band crumble. I would therefore suggest that there is nothing to stop MES producing an album every year or two for the remainder of his years.

Daggerfall96 - September 20, 2008 05:23 PM (GMT)
He went "solo" with that schimozzle after the actual Fall group were sacked ten years ago. Then surprised many of us with an XFM radio show circa 1999 that convincingly shouted/implied "we are the Fall" and since that has toed and twoed and froed and fabbed and fashed as to whther The Fall actually exist, with a regular assemblage of musos and friends that sometimes deserve the moniker and sometimes don't.

Mark E Smith, therefore, to me, defies whther the answer is -able. I get the feeling that if'n he were run over by a lorry tomorrow, reissues aside, he would be replaced.

Possibly, probably and traumatically definitely one of you knows this to be true. It wouldnt be like when Jimbo bathed out either. There's a rock genius standing over Abe's grave hovering from a balcony string as we speak who will make us forget Mark in, say, 3 or 30 years.
And he ain't Ark's vocalist either. Obviously.

Mr. Marshall - September 21, 2008 04:10 PM (GMT)
His vibrations will live on, ya fuckers.

athlete cured - September 22, 2008 02:00 PM (GMT)
Only MES can play God. Mark E. Dearest should have died after Brix so its all gravy.
But when he's finally gone we have an amazingly prolific legacy.
Long live MES! I could go for at least another 12 albums.

An inferior product mess!
