I was going to say 1 was Neil Young but then I thought 3 was Neil.
Good quiz - hard.

bradx - July 28, 2008 04:01 PM (GMT)
5 - the one and only Swell Maps!!! Surely it is - with the giveaway clue - the Pere Ubu EP on the table.

Fritter - July 28, 2008 04:06 PM (GMT)
Correct Bradx - 5 is Swell Maps. As for number 1 or 3, what's your Final Answer? ;)

Praise indeed coming from the man they call the Jim Bowen Of The South Coast. I'd say at least 8 out of 10 of them are classed by their fans at least as Semi-Legendary, some are proper legendary.

elvischomsky - July 28, 2008 04:07 PM (GMT)
Lumme! This is tough.
Err...

2. Jarvis? Simon Lebon?
3.. Robyn Hitchcock?
8. Patti Smith?????

Oh, I give up!

Hmmm ... it looks like his sort of pose in 1... cuz of the feedback thing. But it looks more like him in 3 .. .what with the peace signs and the slight grizzle - so I'll say 3 is Neil Young.

B)

bradx - July 28, 2008 04:10 PM (GMT)
7 - Jim Morrison

Fritter - July 28, 2008 04:10 PM (GMT)
Correctamundo Bradx - 3 is Neil Young

Elvischomsky, all wrong I'm afraid, including #8's gender (and there's one that I would never get in a million years, if that's any consolation).

So Far:

3 - Neil Young
5 - Swell Maps

Can you tell us which ones are the wankers - as a sort of clue...

hmm...2 definitely, 1 possibly (but I have a soft spot for him), 6 opinion is divided (but MES seems to have a big problem with him in the middle)

3,4,7,8,& 9 are Gods - no question ;)

10 is the 'difficult' one I put in in a bit of a panic

elvischomsky - July 28, 2008 04:26 PM (GMT)
Well, 2 certainly looks like a wanker.
Are 6 a four piece, or is that ectoplasm or something?
"MES seems to have a big problem with him" - well that really narrows it down!

bradx - July 28, 2008 04:34 PM (GMT)
7 now looks like some krautrockperson. But who - I'm not sure.

10 looks like it could be Rip Rig & Panic or some band like that... Pigbag maybe. I don't know the sax player offhand. Look, I'm cooking my tea, listening to Radio 4, reading Uncut and doing the quiz at the same time, orlright :-)

6. Shellac?
8. Bowie?

3. looks like Dave Gilmour to me. :o

whoops! silly me... :ohdear:

duckpin236 - July 28, 2008 04:36 PM (GMT)
The reason I am guessing # 8 is Capt Beefheart is because it looks like Midnight Hatsize on Telecaster.[not the Captain's regular hat though]

Getting Very Warmer on 7

10: they dropped the conventional instruments after a couple of albums.

No rush, it's still bedtime in the Antipodes and er...lunch hour in America.

yup - Now you say it - it IS Beefheart - I recognise the cymbals* round the mic. I wouldn't be surprised it this was taken at the Venue... where I saw the capt way back in '80.

* on edit - gongs.

6: Yes, Shellac - well done (I think the photo must've been taken from the window of a passing Virgin Train)

8: Not Bowie, no

(yikes, it's hard to keep up on just the one computer, so apologies for addressing each answer in order)

He's used the same guitar strap since the ice age, I think - and if you're good at spotting makes of amplifiers, #1 should be a doddle. Not very helpful, I know

No and No. If it's any help, #7 has presented himself completely differently almost since the day after that pic was taken, while #2 has always looked like a posey twat :)

Now see that the Captain had removed the pinches from his fedora and looking straight at the brim, I thought it was an extra thick brim...nice cropping, but Oh that telecaster

That's a great photo of Swell Maps. It really conveys the exuberance of their sound. So it's kind of sobering to reflect on the fact that half of them are now dead.

10's got to be early 80s - A Certain Ratio (of good songs to bad songs and it's not a good ratio)? ABC?
