Title: HAVE YOU BEEN FOLLOWING THE BAND SINCE IT'S
Description: INCEPTION?

If You do pick an era could you please specify favoured gigs and albums and reasons why, as well as you can. Personally I liked the 1980 to 1982 output a because of their gigs a lot more banter with the audience and you had the albums and singles between the 'Fiery Jack' single all the way to 'Room To Live', including 'Hex', 'Grotesque' and 'Slates'.

My favourite Fall albums came out in 1992, 1997, 2008, 1983 and 2000.

The best Fall show I ever saw was in 2006.

My first Fall gig was in 1984 after already being a fan for more than four years. Nevertheless how could I ignore the Totale's Turns to Room To Live era, not forgetting the singles, in this poll?

strontium dawg - May 30, 2008 02:29 PM (GMT)
The impenetrability of The Fall was what first attracted me. I couldn't understand why there was a song called 'How I Wrote Elastic Man', but no song called 'Elastic Man'. I found that frustrating.

This was Palace of Swords Reversed, so 1987. Although I stuck with listening to them I didn't actually *enjoy* listening until Extricate and a 9/10 review in the NME that put things in a more personal and therefore understandable context for me.

I had time off to fight the rave wars, but after that the The Fall just clicked for me. I either understood them or learnt that it didn't matter.

Pretty well as the first two say, up to 83-ish i guess; gigs and recordings Totale's Turns and Grotesque/Slates sort of atmosphere and the impenetrability as mentioned ^ and poor rich strangeness etc.
It hadn't settled down at all then, it was seminally unsettling... mind you it's not very settled down at the moment is it, which i suppose is why we're still asking and answering the same questions...

I knew nothing of The Fall until 1985.
I'm glad, I might not have liked them before then.

I was going to ask if anyone had bought Bingo Masters in '78, then every subsequent release thereafter, right up to the present day.

I'm afraid I didn't join in till about '85, and then fell out with The Fall in '91 (Shiftwork).

Didn't return to the fold until discovering Blindness on Jules Holland, which has cost me dearly financially, but am glad to say I'm back on track at last!

And I'll tell ya   in my day the old bastard NEVER got cheered when he walked on stage. (More likely bottled.) I took a mate to his first Fall gig in years in 2002 and he turned to me and said: What are they cheering for/ MES, I replied. Are they really Fall fans, he exclaimed.

Yeah that went on all the time. But it did have something to do with the perceived removal of barriers between performer and audience. That whole I could do that thinking.

I think MES' new big entrance is a total hoot - like going to see Elvis in Vegas...

You'd be right but only if he were wearing that jumpsuit and American Trilogy were revving up in the background.

First thing I heard was the Peelie session US 80's 90's, although it was the next session (11, I think - Athlete Cured, Twister, Guest Informant and Australians in Europe that secured my interest (and inspired me to make some purchases).

Hard to split the first two periods. Bought It's The New Other Thing at the time of it's release, and when hearing John Quays on the Peel session - that was it, next day at school I announced I had a favourite group - The Fall.

Best gig period for me - Huddersfield, between Dragnet and Grotesque (I think), and Leeds Bierkeller around Hex time.

Gave up on them after Bend Sinister, but returned to the fold when Extricate came out, for some reason i read the NME for the first time in ages and a review persuaded me to try them again.

Since the beginning which is no mean feat given that I live in Australia.
Had the pleasure of seeing them in late 81 in London at the Venue then there was the 1st Australian tour of 82 followed by a long drought until the 2nd Australian tour of 91 when I had the please of interviewing Martin & Marcia. Still waiting for the 3rd Australian tour
