Title: Imperial Wax Solvent vs. Reformation Post-TLC

Which?

Dave The Fall Fan - April 29, 2008 07:14 AM (GMT)
Reformation Post TLC by a short hair.

aerskine - April 29, 2008 10:40 AM (GMT)
Reformation. IWS is sounding pretty good (and may win out in time), but Reformation is my favourite fall album since Frenz/Bend Sinister.

Those Americans could have made one of the great Fall albums if they hadn't been hobbled by the appalling production and an MES firing on less than all cylinders. I'm sorry they didn't get the chance. Here's hoping the forthcoming DVD will do them justice.

But, given that both the drawbacks above have been sorted - and how! - on the new one, it's no contest at all.

snoweyuk - April 29, 2008 10:44 AM (GMT)
Even at this very early stage in IWS's life, its clearly always going to be better than RPTLC/AYAMW. As for the other three polls - way too early to tell.

This is my belief too.

IWS - no contest here, surely!

SonofAlways - April 29, 2008 03:22 PM (GMT)
I prefer RPTLC. It's a great, interesting record.

IWS isn't.

You're not keen, are you?

In 2 months' time, you'll disappear having realised what a wonder it is, unable to eat your words. ^_^

I have a nagging feeling at the back of my mind that in two months time, I will be bored to tears with IWS.

Whilst I like all of the songs to a greater or lesser degree now, there is little in the way of subtly in these tracks. Not too much sustainability.

Blows you away to begin with, but for how long......?

IanSchultz - April 29, 2008 04:16 PM (GMT)
I think it will change but currently Reformation Post-TLC but Imperial Wax Solvent is a grower and I though it was one of the best Fall albums the first time I heard it.

twinz2z - April 29, 2008 05:15 PM (GMT)
Ive seen a lot of people saying they are unsure of the 'Sustainability' of the Imperial Wax tunes, but wait a bit,
Im sure I could have said the same for many Fall tracks previously,
This idea seems to have arisen from the apparent instant accesibility of 'Imperial Wax'. I dont anticipate any problems later, with what Im liking today.
cant seem to escape that cynicism whatever happens, eh?
Up the stairs Mr. and wax,

snoweyuk - April 29, 2008 05:20 PM (GMT)
Hope you are both right.

I'm not used to absolutely loving a Fall LP from first off, so I'm probably a bit confused.

twinz2z - April 29, 2008 07:38 PM (GMT)
Im listening to Service right now, a track I loved the first time I heard it, and still do,------shuffle -----spoilt victorian, again a 1st time liked, both without ambiguous lyrics.
Really the hype is confusing me too,
why shouldnt I like a toe-tapping tune in six months just because its lyrics arent convoluted.
I think perhaps there are some saboteurs on the forum, spreading cynisism,
anybody seen any doom-mongering squirrels??
Taurig?
watch the holographic car,

I think the spreading of tapings by the consortium may have something to do with the abrasive 'new edge' not appearing on these tracks.

Interesting point, I think I'll ease up on the gig downloading prior to the next album, and instead listen to them afterwards. I wished IWS would've sounded more 'fresh' than it did when I first listened to it.

IWS beats RPTLC quite clearly though. Mainly because MES' performance is miles better...

DJAsh - April 29, 2008 10:44 PM (GMT)
I haven't got IWS yet but still voted for it.

Exopsychicton - April 30, 2008 07:34 PM (GMT)
Reformation defender is well pleased that the new one is decidedly better to these ears.

again, my sentiments exactly.

shame that scenario isn't on the live album, as this is one of the tracks that suffered most IMO.

That's sort of the problem I had with (the great) FHR, too familiar with a lot of the tracks before the album appeared. The newness of RPTLC on first listen blinded me to its short comings and it was fairly disappointing to conclude that it didn't stand up to further listenings (at least so far, after a year and half that might change  ).
I'd heard nothing from IWS prior to buying my copy, I was struck by how immediate parts of it are, it's by no means perfect either, but that sometimes means that the tracks you took for weaker moments might reveal themselves to be more interesting when you come back to them in the future.

IWS it is then :)

worthless recluse - May 13, 2008 06:28 PM (GMT)
Though FHR was a stronger and more consistent album than RPTLC, I though the variety and relative unpredictability of the latter (with relative oddities like Coach And Horses, The Usher and even Das Boat) was refreshing in the light of the earlier album's emphasis on fairly straight garage rock. But IWS manages to blow both out of the water by being simultaneously varied, concise and consistent.

cryptomoralist - May 19, 2008 12:05 PM (GMT)
IMO RPTLC had at least a coupla tracks that should never have made it. IWS, which I've only been seriously listening to for a week and a bit, is more complete, interesting and not a duff 'un there.
Someone said a while back that "I've Been Duped" had no redeeming characteristics whatsoever, but I found one - Eleni's deadpan delivery of "four hairy men digging up Scotland". I'd listen to it just for that.
However, Scenario, Coach and Horses and The Usher are pure class and cannot be discounted.
And I doubt if 50 Year Old Man will stay in the live setlist for long once the inevitable drummer departure happens - the percussion is furious and outstanding.
Just mah two cents like.
