Title: Killing Joke
Description: Favourite album?

foe - March 17, 2007 09:33 AM (GMT)
KILLING JOKE - one of my favourite bands. Nearly as long in business as THE FALL.

I add all their studio albums, the live albums and the essential compilations to the poll. I don't know for sure, if "The Unperverted Pantomime" is in fact an officially release. But Geordie was involved, so it's here. It's essential for three tracks, the capitol radio recordings from 1980. "Chaos For Breakfast" is a box, where they collected their first four singles/ep's and a few demos for the first time on cd. The "Turn to Red" EP is my favourite EP of all times, so this box is something like a holy grail for me.

Ladies and Gentlemen, please vote and share your thoughts! :)

It seems the multi-choice option is fucked up. I can only vote for one album!

So I voted for the "Chaos for Breakfast" Box.
My favourite regular albums are "What's this for" and "Extremities...".

The first two studio albums are essential, and Revelations is pretty good. Lost interest in about 1984, after Youth left and they became more conventional to my ears, I think Eighties was the last truly great record they made.

I've been meaning to check out those recent-ish collections, although I have most of the early stuff on vinyl anyway.

Anyway, voted the debut.

I would have preferred a multi-choice option, too. :(

One week ago I probably would have voted for the frequently overlooked "Fire Dances", but listening to "What's This For" twice within the last few days made me change my mind.

"Ha!" remains one of my all time favourite live albums. Extremely glad that it finally got a CD release after more than 20 years. Would have been a bit unfair to choose this one, though, I think.

Actually the last studio album I bought was "Night Time" in 1985. A bit too mainstream IMO, but they seem to have recovered partly in the last 15 years. At least they were still spectacular live. Last year I watched a 1985 gig I attended myself again on TV. Very pleasant memories...

I'm pretty sure "The Unperverted Pantomime" is an official release as I got my copy from a "regular" dealer.

There's also another very recommendable Virgin compilation from 2004 called "For Beginners" which acts as some kind of companion to "Laugh? I Nearly Bought One".

what I'm actually missing a couple, sigh. Yup love em to death but everyone needs what's this for (in my humble opinion). Fantastic tunes, strongly played with losts of messed up sound ....gotta love that dog barking though, only clean sound on the disc!

I bought the first LP, and played it often in the dark. Really menacing stuff. But the tracks I heard on Peel from the second album didn't sound too exciting, so I passed. Haven't paid any attention to them since.

I liked "Are You Receiving?" best. It's not on here.

But I guess it wasn't really an album. It's a 3-song 10 inch EP. It's GREAT!

The "Turn to Red" EP is available on cd on the Chaos for Breakfast Box.
Tracklist: 1. Nervous System 2. Turn to Red 3. Are You Receiving 4. Almost Red
Almost Red is a remix/dub version of Turn to Red.

Great is an understatement for this ep. :)

All the releases up to Night Time were amazing! Killing Joke, What's This for, Revelations, Fire Dances and last but not least Ha!, all classics. I hope we get a reissue of Fire Dances soon, as it is the last of those who don't got this treatment yet.
Night Time was the first step in the wrong direction. Too mainstreamy, but very good though. After two unbelievable weak albums they released another classic with Extremities Dirt & Various Repressed Emotions.
My Problem with the newer albums is the voice of Jaz Coleman. Like MES (!), he lost some variety and range in his voice.

Spot on!

Unlike Jaz Coleman MES learned to cope with his age-conditioned physical limitations.

I think the Psyche/Wardance single was better overall.

It seems I already voted - probably for Revelations though I'd put What's This For ahead of that now I think. I haven't hreard anything by them that I'd consider meritless - even Outside the Gate has its moments despite its awful production and the fact that it's essentially a solo album. I have a lot of time for Night Time too. Hosannas is a truly great album.

GrumpyNorthernGit - November 12, 2009 11:53 AM (GMT)

whilst I love(d) Pssssssssssssyche, was a bit disappointed with the 1st album and thought the 2nd was tons better - after that it all got a bit embarrassing and they really should be in the 'give it up' poll.

For some reason, much as I like What's this For?, I just never seem to play it. I always intend to play it but find something I'd much rather listen to instead.

Totally Weird - August 28, 2011 06:48 PM (GMT)
Have all that's listed and more but with one vote, had to go for the debut that started it all off, Change, Tomorrow's World, Requiem, Complications... :D
