Title: Tusk

This poll gives me a feeling of deja vu.
Probably cos we did it before. Before the crash. :o
"Over and Over" It was a tough choice, but I voted for this. Dreamy and beautiful. A Christine McVice song I think? She sings it. I prefer her songs and Lyndsey Buckinghams.
"The Ledge" - good fun, almost punky even.
"Think About Me" My second choice. I would love to see or be part of this being performed at an open mic, maybe the guy I saw do Go Your Own Way last night could help make that happen. :)
"Save Me a Place" humble sounding, nice.
"What Makes You Think You're the One" good slow pop.
"That's All For Everyone" ditto, and dreamy too. :)
"Not That Funny" more fun, near punky, pop.
"That's Enough For Me" ditto
"Brown Eyes" Christine McVie's Brian Wilson tribute (think she was dating him at the time? ). Good stuff!
"Honey Hi" more quality, lightweight pop from Christine McVie
"Walk a Thin Line" more slow dreamy pop. Like those backing vocals.
"Tusk" a bit overrated for me...good but doesn't deserve to overshadow the rest of the album
"Never Forget" I found this a little lightweight at first, now I find it a fun, goosepimply, sexy even nice track to end the album on. :)
zoot horn polo - February 15, 2007 01:13 PM (GMT)
"Over and Over". I echo Stranger's description of it.
I also recommend the live album that came out the following year, and which can now be picked up reasonably cheaply on CD (after years of being priced at something like £19.99).
Three legged black grey hog - February 15, 2007 01:42 PM (GMT)
Oh god.
So hard to choose. Easier to list the ones that wouldn't be in the running for this coveted award. The title track I think possibly overshadows becuase lots of people haven't heard the others. I'm torn between Sara, Sisters of the Moon and the EP-within-an-album that is the Buckingham 'punk pop' songs (let's pick I Know I'm Not Wrong as the representative).
But no, today's choice is That's All For Everyone, for the way the melody circles round and round without ever seeming to resolve.
STILL better than Never Mind the Bollocks.

<_<
You are all joking off course?
Stephen - February 15, 2007 02:13 PM (GMT)
I think Tusk probably is a better album than Never Mind The Bollocks, although I can see that the latter is more important.
squarehead - February 15, 2007 03:03 PM (GMT)
My friend and I joked about this album for some time, so finally I called his bluff and picked up a used vinyl copy for this birthday. We'd expected to be pleasantly surprised, but it turned out to be quite dull. Then again, "Tusk" was a weird thing to hear on commercial radio in 1979.
Also, Last Exit has a drum-heavy passage on one of their albums that bears an uncanny resemblance to "Tusk's" odd rhythms. On a related note, I find the piano bit on "Benny and the Jets" is bubblegum Thelonius Monk.

... with a bit of Duke Ellington?
For an even more overt Monk influence, listen to those "wrong" notes at the end of 'Honky Cat'. Elton definitely knew his jazz.

Ah yes...my mind was a blank when I saw that title. Another good one! :)

Went for Beautiful Child.
A flawless record. In my alltime top 10.
strifeknot - February 16, 2007 05:31 AM (GMT)
I like Rumours and Fleetwood Mac well enough, but Tusk is a massive load of wankage.
imaglasgowmanmyself - February 20, 2007 09:14 PM (GMT)
is this any good?
i remember camper van beethoven going to the bother of making a cover version of the whole album

that CVB cover LP is cool too.
Three legged black grey hog - February 23, 2007 01:57 PM (GMT)
My girlfriend currently only has this really dreadful 'midi system' relic of the 1980s to play music on. RPTLC sounds appalling on it. Most things sound appalling on it. Tusk sounds brilliant. As nlgbbbblth says, flawless. There is literally not one single bad track on it, and the production is exquisite (this statement is not incompatible with liking Crass, Cobra Killer and Josef K, before anyone starts). Quite intrigued to hear the CVB version now.

Hearing this for the first time. Wow, blimey, what a sprawl. Incredible to think it was all recorded in the same place. That's All For Everyone is gorgeous, but then I'm only two sides in.
imaglasgowmanmyself - November 7, 2009 07:43 PM (GMT)
i heard this a while back and seem to remember it wasnt great but had a couple of good songs
Neal Cassady - November 8, 2009 09:41 AM (GMT)
Never really bothered with "The Mac" much, but after seeing all the stuff on tele Friday I may well invest in Tusk... though I get the feeling it will be played twice and left to gather dust along with so many records I seem to buy nowadays...

It wasn't.
Some of it is studio-recorded. Other parts were recorded by Lindsey Buckingham at home, supposedly in his bathroom.

Ah, so Stevie lied in the documentary then. I'll have to check though.

The 2CD (!) version is dirt cheap nowadays hint hint.

proximity to "talcum powder" and the like.
R. Totale - November 9, 2009 09:39 AM (GMT)
I'll re-iterate my "lost post". More musically adventurous than Bollocks, but far less culturally significant.
Fritter - November 10, 2009 10:49 AM (GMT)
Fuck me, Sara is beautiful - I wonder if Talk Talk were big fans of this song? Similar airy effortless feel to Spirit Of Eden.
Three legged black grey hog - November 10, 2009 11:47 AM (GMT)
It is, it's a way better song than Rhiannon, which is the obvious comparison in the Mac catalogue.
Fritter - November 10, 2009 12:02 PM (GMT)
Yes, from what I remember of it, Rhiannon sounds like a pub-rock stomper in comparison. Sara really does seem lighter than air, can't figure out what's going on - can't put my finger on how any of the sounds are actually being made (the last time I felt this was with Miles Davis' He Loved Him Madly).
Zoot Horn Polo - November 10, 2009 12:33 PM (GMT)
'Sara' is ace, and I love it dearly, but 'Rhiannon' is the song where Mick Fleetwood proves his greatness. I could listen to him playing those patterns all day.

I don't know about that - never owned it - but I do know that I could look at Stevie Nicks' nose all day.
"Go Your Own Way" though, now that's drumming.

"Sands Of Time" on Future Games is also drumming.

Upon typing Rhianonn into youtube, I would have to say Stevie Nicks is not looking great.
Rhianonn

I heard they made it just to see if they could work together as a band again. It's the one thing in their catalog I don't have.
Er, CVB that is....not Fleetwood Mac
Fritter - November 10, 2009 04:21 PM (GMT)
Apart from Green-era and Greatest Hits compilations, Central London is a Fleetwood famine, a Mac lack, a Tusk tundra....all shelves empty in HMV and Fopp. Are they about to have a massive reissue programme?

They've all been Stevie Nicked.

Their early/mid '70s catalogue is, as they say, "sorely in need of remastering".
It would be great to see albums like Bare Trees and Future Games coming out in much-improved CD form. For me, the Danny Kirwan/Bob Welch era is the best.

erm, I can't believe this.
Have you never heard of the "Record and Tape Exchange"? :o
they're not far from central London (if they're still going), and while I've not been in one for years I'd bet you'd find four copies of Tusk, and one apiece of Rumours and "Fleetwood Mac" (the 1975 LP with "Rhiannon" on it) on vinyl if you walked into any of their branches right now...
