Title: Another Quiz #2

Drjohnrock - December 25, 2006 09:06 PM (GMT)
1. Which future member of The Ramones auditioned to be in the band of Keith, who had a hit (US hit, at least) with the song 98.6?

2. According to band member Jon Smith, how did Edgar Winter's White Trash get its name?

3. What odd situation regarding the featured artists is shared by both Grace Slick's Manhole album and Kate and Anna McGarrigle's Christmas album?

4. What do Van Morrison, Neil Diamond, Brick and Paul Davis have in common? (besides the obvious stuff like "all being professional musicians")

5. Before being in Blondie, Deborah Harry was a member of what hippie-type band that put out an album on Capitol (I think that was the label)?

6. What musician whose band performed at the original Woodstock later served on the Woodstock town council? In fact, earlier this year, he introduced a resolution that the US House of Representatives look into impeaching Dubya--like the town council has a lot of influence there! Hint: some regard him, perhaps unfairly, as being a cosmetic or useless member of the band in question.

7. What avant garde sax player appeared as a sideman on a mid-70s Dave Brubeck album?

8. Where does the "Rashaan" in Rashaan Roland Kirk come from?

9. Before forming Steely Dan, Donald Fagen and Walter Becker were musical directors and backing musicians for a year or two with what musical act?

10. Although not credited when the song came out, who wrote Buddy Holly's Maybe Baby?

11. Which member of The Mamas and Papas hosted a short lived American Bandstand-type show in the early 70s?

12. Boogie-woogie piano player Meade "Lux" Lewis briefly appears (uncredited) playing piano in what famous movie?

13. What band, also produced by Al Kooper and also debuting on Sounds Of The South Records, had its debut album come out about the same time as Lynyrd Skynyrd?

14. What was the first wholly white act on Stax Records, at least according to the act in question? This would be the main Stax label, not any subsidiary labels.

15. Prior to the formation of The Doors, Ray Manzarek, along with two of his brothers, was in what band that had (according to Jim Morrison) a contract with World Pacific Records?

This quiz should be a little easier than my previous one--at least The Ramones and Mamas and Papas questions can be answered by the process of elimination!

You really think so? I mean, there are only two other Mamas and Papas to choose from on No. 11--you folks should be able to get that one without too much more trouble!

Still, should I give clues now for the remaining 7 that are unanswered? Or should everyone get a little more time to freely google before I do that? (not that some haven't already done that!)

13 It's A Beautiful Day?

Sorry, not It's A Beautiful Day--the album by the group in question was released in '73, and IABD had formed quite a bit before that.

This one is really hard--you would almost have to have been paying close attention at the time, or have seen an interview years later where Kooper complained that he had put much more time and effort into the group in question than he did for Skynyrd, but that Skynyrd was the one of the two that made it big.
So unless someone comes up with a list of Kooper productions archived somewhere, I'll have to give a clue.

Yes, quite shocking, I now realize. Nothing is sacred. Oh, the humanity! :cry2:

I'll probably have to give clues to most of these pretty soon. But do I really have to do it for the Mama and Papas one? I mean, we already know that it's neither John Phillips nor Michelle Phillips. There are only two other people it could be!

2. According to band member Jon Smith, how did Edgar Winter's White Trash get its name?

3. What odd situation regarding the featured artists is shared by both Grace Slick's Manhole album and Kate and Anna McGarrigle's Christmas album?

6. What musician whose band performed at the original Woodstock later served on the Woodstock town council? Hint: some regard him, perhaps unfairly, as being a cosmetic or useless member of the band in question.

13. What band, also produced by Al Kooper and also debuting on Sounds Of The South Records, had its debut album come out about the same time as Lynyrd Skynyrd?

The above are the remaining unanswered questions. The following are clues:

2. Oh what the hell, I'll just give the answer for this one. When Jon Smith was back home in Texas getting ready to join the as-yet-unnamed band, his grandmother told him: "White trash people. That's who you'll be playing with. White trash people." Jon told Edgar and the rest of the crew what Granny said, they liked it, and the rest is history.

3. Hint: Suppose you are about to cut a solo album--you're the named, featured performer. The album will feature your vocal and/or instrumental skills. This being the case, what would your minimal expectation be for every song on the album? For some reason, that minimal expectation isn't met on one track of Grace's album and two or three (I forget exactly) cuts on Kate and Anna's album.

6. Hint: With respect to the band the guy whose name I'm seeking was in, the guitarist was very overweght, while the bass player was shot to death by his own wife in the early 80s.

10. Hint: The writer was a close relative of Buddy Holly.

13. The band I'm looking for had a two word name. The first word is the same as the first name of a piano playing, humorous (well, some think he is--I have my doubts) jazz vocalist. The last word is a very common last name in the English language (not Smith).

I was sitting right behind her at the Madonna gig this summer. Towards the end she turned to her mate and said "I almost want to be up there myself!"

"I bet you would love" thought I.

She must have been thinking "I sold this place out once. Never again though.."
