Title: Another Quiz
Drjohnrock - December 13, 2006 04:39 AM (GMT)
Didn't call this "Pop Quiz #whatever" because I didn't want to mess with the numbering of bradx's excellent quizzes, and besides, mine is more concentrated on American musicians.
Remember, real men don't use Google -_- , although some of these may not be that easy to answer even using Google.
1. What later member of Lawrence Welk's orchestra had a 1971 Top 40 instrumental hit named after a popular children's drink?
2. Flaco Falcon, percussionist for 1969 one hit wonders Crabby Appleton ("Go Back"), later played in the band of what British musician? (appeared on one of his live albums)
3. Ray Stevens and Elephant's Memory both had mid-70s songs concerning what fad?
4. Which Cowsill brother wisely chose never to perform with his family's band?
5. What does the ESP in ESP Disk Records refer to?
6. What rock writer included a chapter in a book he wrote claiming to have met a live, adult Jesse Garon Presley (Elvis' twin brother), who officially was stillborn?
7. Early 70s teen idol Bobby Sherman recorded a song written by what late 50s/early 60s teen idol?
8. What Motown session guitarist had a solo instrumental hit named after one of the signs of the zodiac?
9. What Crosby, Stills, Nash and Young copy band had an early 70s hit with a song called Games?
10. What musician, who was quoted in 1974 as saying "I'd rather hear a 1960 Ray Charles record than a 1974 Chicago record anyday" later ended up joining Chicago?
11. What do the bands Santana and Loading Zone have in common?
12. Which performer at the original Woodstock had a minor hit single with We're All Playing In The Same Band?
13. Which regrettably successful American hard rock band considered the names Albatross and Fuck before deciding on a permanent name?
14. What do the bands Hello People and Mountain have in common?
15. What early 60s instumental hit did NRBQ add lyrics to?

3. Streaking
5. Esperanto
11. Tom Coster
Stephen - December 13, 2006 09:23 AM (GMT)
This is even harder than Bradx's and Zoot's.
bradx - December 13, 2006 09:58 AM (GMT)
aye carumba, tis most vexing indeed.
6. I will guess Greil Marcus cuz its the sort of thing he'd do
12. Bert Sommer
14. ND Smart, drummer
96dbFreak - December 13, 2006 10:27 AM (GMT)
1. Cool Aid by Paul Humphrey & his Cool Aid Chemists

9. Redeye
10. Bill Champlin

I'm rather disappointed that the answer to no.11 isn't "They were both named after the lead guitarist".
Drjohnrock - December 13, 2006 01:15 PM (GMT)
Correct answers so far:
1. Pau Humphreys
3. streaking
5. Esperanto
8. Dennis Coffey
9. Redeye
10. Bill Champlin
11. Tom Coster
12. Bert Somner
14. N.D. Smart II
bradx's guess of Greil Marcus for 6. is a good guess--I would have guessed him if I didn't already know the answer--but not correct in this instance. The writer in question is usually far more interesting than Marcus, which makes me wonder why he pulled such a stunt.
Acton High Street - December 13, 2006 01:15 PM (GMT)
5. I think is the Esperanto language, which they intended to release records sung in.
They did release Albert Ayler and Ornette Coleman, IIRC, which is a universal language in my book.

Maybe so, but if it's too easy, then it takes all the fun out of it. Still, I'm impressed
with the nine correct answers so soon--ya'll know a lot about music and/or have good reference books and/or good internet research skills.

The very first ESP release actually was an Esperanto record: Ni Kantu en Esperanto, to be precise...

Hmm..to paraphrase Bill Clinton, "it depends on your definition of teen idol." :D
Since this question could conceivably have more than one anwer, maybe some clues are in order--the guy died in 2005 and is perhaps best known for performing one of those teen death songs.

Or is it infamy? :P
The song of his that Sherman recorded was Oklahoma City Times. I saw Peterson himself do it on American Bandstand ages ago--much better than anything Peterson did in his heyday. I have a crude cassette recording of it somewhere.

Sheesh, another question with more than one possible answer. I'd insert the red faced smiley if it was available in the column to the left as I type this. I guess I could weasel out of this by saying the question asked for a musician, and Cocker to my knowledge doesn't play an instrument, but that's nit picking. I was looking for another Brit guy who plays guitar and in addition to his solo albums, was in a not-very-successful version of a very successful band. Those should be sufficient clues.

Mason was the one I was looking for, and the not-very-successful reference was to Fleetwood Mac.
It seems like the Traffic reunion back in '94 might have gone better if Mason had been involved, but Steve Winwood seems to be the president of the Dave Mason Ememies Club--wonder why that is.

6 is Nick Tosches. I am reckoning he sneaks 1 such factoid in each of his books 'cos I read another where he states a major female C&W star is a ex-bloke (can't remember which books though it was a long time ago I read 'em)

Tosches is correct--the Jesse Presley thing appeared in Nick's book Unsung Heroes of Rock And Roll.

Yes, that's it. NRBQ did it originally on their album entitled, erm, Wild Weekend--although for some strange reason they added the words "It's A" before "Wild Weekend" to the song title itself.
Now the only question left concerns the immortal Cowsills. :P
