My feelings as well. I sing City Dweller when on my way (to myself, mind). The whole thing is really worth another spin. Played it a lot this spring.

not to be forgotten either: M5, one of the defining 90s songs from one of the best Fall albums of that decade

twinz2z - November 23, 2007 03:21 PM (GMT)
I really didnt like it at first, but now with an MP3 on shuffle the individual tracks sound good.
A lot of the live versions are much better as well.
I think it shows just how much difference the track order can make.

'Me. Me and my shadow...'.
Now if it had been called '15 Days'.....

I love the sound of this LP - especially the bass and drums. I also really like some of the keyboard touches such as those on M5 and Behind the Counter. The latter is one of my favourite Fall songs, btw. Probably for "sentimental" reasons I would put this album in top 5 by the Gruppenfuhrer.

matheusvdd - April 7, 2009 01:49 AM (GMT)
8 out of 10 for me.

Behind the Counter has one of the most infected bassline ive ever heard.
15 ways is one of the best pop achievements of the band.

even the usually-panned "500 bottle of wine" is fancied by me. great catchy and rocknroll-jam song.

absolutley superb.

not to be forgotten either: M5

A great example of MES's genius at lyric writing:

"M5...6-7 PM..."

That one line conveys so much, but its so sparse, like shorthand...there aren't even any words really...utterly brilliant.

I think it's the best album of the period spanned by Extricate and Levitate. Sidelining Scanlon and Bush and getting Brix and Burns back in at this point strikes me as one of the very worst decisions Smith has made regarding the group's line-up.

John Ludicrous - April 17, 2009 09:56 PM (GMT)
I lost my copy, which is a shame.

Reckoning and Junk Man are right up there with my favourite Fall songs, yet they seem to get panned regularly on these forums.

MCR is one of the least good Fall LPs

Buy Kurious! - April 17, 2009 11:32 PM (GMT)
I love all Fall LPs equally. :applaud:

Mind you, I played "Systematic Abuse" on repeat for 4 hours the other day.
I think I'm mentally ill...

elvischomsky - April 17, 2009 11:44 PM (GMT)
For shame, this was the last Fall album I bought for ten years or so. I was a fool.

1995-2009 (15 on, 15 off, on again ... wonder for how long :()

Really interesting this, why so many seem to go from an initial fan/aticism, to indifference or avoidance, then a return.

Anyways, couldn't STAND MCR and then CC was the last LP I bought. Listening now to MCR on rotate which prompted me to look at these reviews. My vote: a masterpiece!

1992 - 2005 were my gap years. Hated SW (still do), bought Free Range (loved it) then I was off. Jools Holland bought me back to sense.

As for MCR, it's a strange one. Many highs (Counter, M5, Up To Much, Student, $500 Bottle, City Dweller, War) up against some of the worst Fall songs ever.

Peel versions of MCR tracks are much improved over the LP versions.

I like MCR and have been surprised to read it getting such a bad rap on these forums. Behind The Counter, Junk Man, War and Surmount all do it for me. I prefer it to CC, Levitate and Marshall Suite, though maybe not to Light User Syndrome. Anyway.

My wilderness years were after Infotainment and starting again with Unutterable. Had little time for the Fall in my world of 90s black metal and the like. But now I see how you don't have to choose!

Oh how life is fine, fellow FOFers.

And a happy new year.
