Title: Setlist analysis?

Stephen - November 21, 2009 06:52 PM (GMT)
This thread was lost in the server crash.

Anyone have any thoughts on recent setlists?

– Balance of old/new material?
– Balance of release/unreleased material?
– Length of set vs. quality of set?
– Balance of covers vs. originals?
– Variety of songs played across a tour?

"Setlist Analysis" - nice LP title.

All I would say is that I was a tad disappointed that the "oldie" we got at The Brook was White Lightning (enjoyable though that was), & not Psykick Dancehall or Wings as were aired on other dates on this tour.
Oh well, it's all a bit of a lottery.

Basmikel - November 22, 2009 12:43 PM (GMT)
Great setlists this tour, although even more variation wouldn't hurt.

I suppose they don't want the new album to feel as old as it is on release but they have played the same selections from it for awhile now. I love the new songs and am dying to hear more, so I guess it works.

If I could play god the set would be (roughly) 60% new stuff, 20% from the last decade (Scenario has brought out some great MES performances. Alton Towers, anyone?), one or two old "crowd pleasers" (Not every gig perhaps...But Psykick Dancehall & Wings have been very well received, for instance. Mr Pharmacist & White Lightning usually equal a good time.) and one sort of exclusive surprise like Pat in Leeds. (Squid Law would be a great second song! I'd also quite like to hear "Banana!" shouted with a German accent, etc.) Working out the surprise numbers would keep soundchecks interesting for the band and hopefully keep them as well as the audience on their toes.

I want to hear that song they're using snippets of before the gigs.

Southampton was great, though - no support band at all.

The widest range of tracks played on a tour in many a year, surely?

Faust Banana - December 2, 2009 11:20 PM (GMT)
Having seen them last weekend I was very impressed with their current tour setlist. It's good they've moved on from RNFLP/FHR. Lots of encouraging new material and it was great to hear Scenario live at last. It's one of my favourite ever Fall tracks and they did it justice that night.

However, I say drop Dancehall/Wings/White Lightning/Pharmacist and throw in some different oldies for us nerds.

It'd be great to hear something a bit obtuse like Frenz, Neighbourhood Of Infinity or even an odd one like Terry Waite Sez. Hell, even Hot Aftershave Bop, that would be fun.

I know Mark has always railed against "look back bores" and has had a decently consistent policy of always looking forward but at the same time he shouldn't neglect the large number of great songs from his past.

he still does white lightening and mr pharmasist ???

the only answer to that is to stop dancing.

Snowy - December 2, 2009 11:38 PM (GMT)
Cleanville posted something a few days ago about old band members playing songs from the past etc.

That isn't going to happen, but it would be great if the band played ONE different "old classic" at each gig. And kept the rest of the gig for new/newish stuff.

At the end we would have a dozen examples of today's versions of all those songs we know and love. A bit of effort during rehearsals. Kieron and Dave would take it all in their stride. Eleni would need to think about some knob twiddly effects, and Peter Greenway would get to do some different riffs. MES will, of course, have the lyrics imprinted on the back of his eyelids one would think.

I thought that, it doesn't always have to be White Lightning/Mr Pharmacist, and now, seemingly Psychick Dancehall does it?

so which old songs would work well with the current line up?

English Scheme would be perfect for Elena's synth. That'd be brilliant.

Stop Mithering, you can't have everything.
Best tour in a while for me.:applaud:
I sort of predicted the return of Strychnine as an alternative to White Lightning and Mr P, shame it didn't appear at the Koko or Southampton.
The year began with Hot Cake in Porto and ended with the same in Leam.

I'll need another two trouble free tours, a decent album or two, a second guitarist, no keyboards and cheap tickets. Then the minute I walk in it will all go to shit again.

Do you know, the only thing that truly mystifies me about your feelings, Andy, is your obsession with a 2nd guitarist. I really don't think it would add much. I think the band have been clogged in the mid range before, and that the current set up (I'll let you keep your own opinions about the musicians themselves) seems just about perfect to me: glam drums, rockabilly guitar, fat bass, cheeky keys and shouting. Lovely.

A 2nd drummer is always welcome, tho, if you're reading Mark...that Daren is a nice lad -_-

As long as the entire song consists of one riff.

OK, maybe not Pumpkin Soup and Mashed Potatoes then, but that still leaves everything else.

I think the one-finger keyboard stuff is about 30 years too late. It's dated like "syn-drums". One guitarist isn't enough, there has to be something else to fill in the gaps, to add a bit of "tune" from time to time. Guitars haven't gone out of date, for me anyway.
