Title: The Knockouts
generalist - January 7, 2006 09:38 AM (GMT)
anyone know anything about this band 'the knockouts'? are they any good?
i got a mail that ran:

| Shabby bands from Luton. Not too many of 'em to the pound. There was once a shambling Half Man Half Biccies meets Motorhead at a broken Moog expedition style 3 piece called Thrilled Skinny who were pals with The Wedding Present. They ruled & were so resolutely DIY they even had a fun scrappy fanzine called Clod they gave away to bemused punters. The fact that 15 years later, at least two of them are knocking about in a similar, albeit slower band called The Knockouts is utterly heartwarming, not to mention that Clod is still going (Awwww!). They have a couple of CDs available at cheap prices - 'Cannibal Lounge', 'System One' and the mini Clod with a free CD, 'Mr Side To Side' The songs are instrumental lo-fi & proud. imagine a more drunken Wedding Present, Beatnik Filmstars, Gallon Drunk, early Desert Sessions (Josh Homme's pre-Queens stuff) & a liberal dose of the Fall layered with feedback & a junkshop attitude then yr somewhere near. Take a bit of Bedfordshire home with you! |

Nope, Sounds like my kind of band though.
or they have a good biog.
clayts - January 7, 2006 09:41 AM (GMT)
Thrilled Skinny were ace, gen, so I would be less than pleased if The Knockouts were anything other than brilliant
clayts - January 7, 2006 09:43 AM (GMT)
Thanks for the nudge, by the way - I shall play that album today :)
Stephen - August 12, 2009 08:41 AM (GMT)
The Knockouts evolved from Thrilled Skinny and play exciting instrumental garage rock. You can
hear some of it here.
Their new CD
Honolulu Suncream is fantastic.
The same brilliant minds responsible for The Knockouts also create the very, very funny
Clod Magazine and the
Luton Haiku.
Ice Cream For Quo readers will be aware that all three of these projects are worthy of your attention.
Any fans out there?

Bloody YES! Was it you, Stephen, who introduced me to them via a MIU comp upload? 'Mexico'?
Anyway, yes, I'm a big fan of theirs and cannot wait to hear the new one. Rather like The Mummies, they do two things; both are exactly the right things to do, and they do them the best way they could possibly be done. Hits the spot every time.

No, that wasn't me.
On their
website they are
charting their sales with brutal honesty. The unit-shifting is not especially encouraging so far, but I think most Fall fans would enjoy their music.

Thrilled Skinny were a great band :) Saw them at Nelson Tacklers club with The Keatons in 1991 and they were great. Scrounged a t-shirt of the singer, well swapped it actually. I've still got it somewhere.
When I get my speakers working I'll definitely check this out.

Heh, yeah; I bought a CD off 'em last year, which arrived with "Order no. 40" on the receipt. I bought another, several weeks later, and had to smile when I saw the receipt: "Order no. 41".*
I'd also recommend them to fans of Billy Childish and Cee Bee Beaumont.
Orphiztic - August 12, 2009 09:22 AM (GMT)
Sounds like another CD I can't afford yet again, damn too much stuff I want right now.

The Remarkable Sounds Of India - The Knockouts (Top Ten 007 by Topplers Records)
is a fantastic EP. Sung in Hindi - yes, with a cover of a Ramones song...

Just ordered it. It's £2 from
here.
The Topplers label is putting out some fantastic stuff. The Dan Melchior album is also superb.

I have the new album in my mitts. Have listened thrice. I say: :applaud: , and :rollover:
Fave tracks at the mo' are 'Vendredi Maintenant' - which has some excellent group shouting - and 'Big Woman in Perfume'.
mjungblu - November 18, 2009 08:12 PM (GMT)
this great album comes to my mind considering a vote for the top 50 thingie at Dandelion radio
Zinc? probably that one!
Fritter - November 18, 2009 08:30 PM (GMT)
They're my favourite band at the moment.
mjungblu - November 18, 2009 09:40 PM (GMT)

Excellent! Cheers, Keg, I am deeply indebted to you.
I cannot believe they've only sold 13 copies of the new album
http://www.hightown.org.uk/7.htmlFor God's sake, if you're reading this and you haven't bought a copy then DO SO NOW.

I've just started to plan to make a film with them, and am very excited about it. Luton, here we come.

I would love to hear more about this.
By the way, I filmed
the world's most amateur Knockouts video (except perhaps for
this one).
Someone else filmed
The Knockouts in rehearsal.

diabolic 13, only?
the sales don’t represent the importance of this nice playful gem.
Live should be a treat.
Kapitän - December 4, 2009 11:44 PM (GMT)
Well, they can add one more to their sales :)
Sounds fantastic so far

Already mentioned this in
music of FOF members thread, but wanted to bring it to the attention of Knockouts completists/obsessives/crazed stalker fans, too:

I wouldn't call myself a stalker exactly, but I do have the restraining order framed above my fireplace.
Excellent stuff. Looking forward to the Drowned UFO album.
(Approx. 75% of the music I've heard so far this decade has been made by FOF members :applaud: )

Their
Dimanche Maintenant is remarkable, too. Includes an excellent photo disc.

how to order that one? I hope that a copy is left...
Fritter - February 12, 2010 05:58 PM (GMT)
One or more members of The Knockouts might well be manning the stall selling Clod (a fine fanzine) tomorrow at
The Alternative Press Fair, tomorrow, which is usually an entertaining afternoon anyway.
The Knockouts are also appearing for 45 minutes (20% longer than usual) at the Luton Beer Festival next Friday night
